battle for 8 th

If the battle for 15th is at take II, this battle for 8th place starts this week. Up to now 3 out of the 5 countries involved played games, buth this week they are all involved, some even with 3 teams.

According to my predictions Czeck lost already (Cl Q2) 0,5 point (1 for a win system), and Turkey won 0,5. Belgium reached the high predictions ans Netherland and Scots didn't play so far.

This week the 5 countries have to meet following predictions (in 1 for a win system):

8 Netherlands 0.5
9 Scotland 0
10 Belgium 2
11 Czeck rep 2
12 Turkey 0

This predictions are based up 2-1,5-1-0,5-0 points in a KO round and depending on home-away games.

I would put Greece in that battle too. They will have 3 teams in CL Groups, but probably even one could not make it through to the 1/8-finals or UEFA Cup. I see them dropping out off top 8 (if not this year than next year surely). I expext surprises (positive) from dutsch and turkish clubs, so Netherlands 7th, and Turkey will come up too (but 8th is very optimistic at this stage).

Id go for :

Netherlands - 0.5
Scotland - 0.5
Belgium - 0.5 or 1 (draw for Bruge, Anderlecht draw or defeat)
Czech Rep - 1 (win for Prague, sorry Banik)
Turkey - 0

Overall i agree i think Netherlands could well overtake Greece, but i think it would be a little too much for anyone else to overtake them this season. For the last three seasons Scotland have gained highest points (Czech Rep. tied 03-04) of those in positions 9-12, so id go for Scotland to regain the all important 9th place. Also for next season Scotland will loose less co-efficients than any respective competitor, so looking good for this year and next year. Turkey could also have a strong year having only four teams compared to six in last couple of years.

turkey is going to make good job in eurpean cups for this year. up to now trabzonspor make 2 win and 1 draw in thre match which one of them was against dinamo kiev in away. and up to now trabzonspor make more than my expection.

also besiktas and genclerbirligi is the other strong teams. both of them the last year make good jobs.

turkey may be won't go to 8th place but for next year i think we will make better from this.

aydinfatih, problem is you'll lose your best score next year, so in 2 years you need to win 7 points on both Scotland and Netherlands (and maybe belgium).

THat's a LOT, you almost need to have 1 or 2 CL/UEFA champions to do this...

Off to Reykjavik in the morning for the match against Hafnarfjardar. 800 fans making the trip, not bad considering we only have 3,000 season ticket holders and Iceland isn't the cheapest place to get to or the cheapest place to drink!!!!!

Anyway, with the losing teams in the 3rd CL round dropping into the UEFA cup, losing in the CLQR3 is not disastrous as clubs may be able to pick up just as many, if not more points this way, even taking the 3 bonus points for CL into consideration. Rangers losing 2-1 away to CSKA Moscow is not a disaster may even help the Scottish coefficient.

More important in the race for 8th will be how the teams in UCQR2 perform from countries like Scotland. Dunfermline, Beveren, Genclerbirligi, Slavia Prague, Sigma Oloumoc will all be expected to win through into the 1st round and any sides failing to do this will hamper their countries chances of getting into 8th place.

I really feel that for teams pushing for 8th spot, getting as many of their 'smaller' teams into the UEFA group stage is going to be hugely important.

I hope we can get through against the Icelandic team, but Hibs defeat in the Intertoto cup shows that there are no easy games at the moment.

No, it doesn't. Nil points are not helpful. If you're gonna improve on ranking, don't lose. Winning is best. Rangers winning both matches vs. CSKA give 5 points and CL group stage. Better. There is no guarantee for UC-group stage.

And if you lose points in Hafnarfjördur, promise me to try to pronounce Hafnarfjördur, geordie, and show me the diploma afters. So far only Icelanders and (some)Norwegians are capable.

The keyword in that phrase was 'may' anita.

5 points may well be better than 0. (or 4 points better than 1, 4.5 better than 0.5) :o)

But 5 points + 2 is not better than 0 points + 8. (a totally hypothetical argument)

Ideally I'd like to see Rangers win at Ibrox and go through to the group stage and do well in the Champions League as I like all Scottish clubs to do well in Europe.

As for the pronunciation of Hafnarfjordur, as a Scotsman in Newcastle I have enough trouble trying to speak the local lingo so I think the chances of succeeding your challenge are about the same as Dunfermline winning the UEFA cup.

It's a pity this forum has no sounnd attached to it. Hearing 20 people try to say Hafnarfjordur.

You wouldn't want to hear it, Ricardo. Ugly sound. I scare my children with it, and they are 28 and 30.

I don't think you have to bother, geordie, Dunfermline will win both matches.

I hope so anita.

It's weird, most people expect us to win and to be honest I'm really scared in case we embarass ourselves in our first European adventure in 34 years. Winning would be more of a relief than anything.

Someone mentioned that at home in Europe Dunfermline have won 13 out of 13 home matches (albeit a long time ago). Shame then that our home tie has been switched to Perth as Hafnarfjordur have refused to play on our artificial pitch which was installed as part of the UEFA 2 year trial.

Yeah, should we cry together, geordie

Its hard enough being forced to be a geordie as a Scot, but "don't come the cowboy with me", like my late co-writer Kirsty MacColl wrote. Guess that you in your heart hate England. Am i right or am I right?

Actually I don't. But then again the Geordies probably aren't typical English and I think if I lived further south then I may indeed hate England.

Despise the arrogant English media, but that's a different topic for another day.
