Which is, for you, the best UEFA groups for your team?

Re: best UEFA groups for your teams

Don't know which are best(for Zenit) but I think the stronge the better, cause Zenit doesn't have much expierence in EC so if it is play-off game they may make 1 mistake(1 bad much) and to be out of the competition(as it was close to be with Pashing Austria lucky for Zenit it didn't bring to the bad end),in the group stage they may have done 1 mistake and still to have pretty ok chances to go further(3rd place is neccesary - this target is quite achivable) and to play with such teams as Lazio or Parma,Athletic or Villarealle is very good to gain expirience and confidence and to take at least 3rd place. And if they are among 3 best with such opponents it will be more likily to go even further.
I hope my thoughts are clear to everybody(TOO MANY WORDS)

All teams should pray to have AEK Athens from pot 1. AEK is much much weaker than the team that played in champions league last year and only managed to keep 2 players from last year team, losing all its national team players except one. They also have huge financial problems and they have to play in the Olympics stadium as their ground is being rebuilted. A similar case to PAOK Salonika who was seeded in champions league 3rd qualifying round but managed to lose both of its game and then lost two next games being seeded in UEFA Cup and left europe with its worst performance ever, 4 games 4 losses from weaker opponents-Makampi Tel Aviv and AZ Alkmaar.

I (as a Belgian) wouldn't include Beveren, because they are way too unpredictable. They can have great games, and REALLY bad ones. I wouldn't be surprised if they'd got a win over the "A"team, and a loss to all other teams...

Standard is in the same case... but they CAN prove to be more consistent.

For FC Zenit Sankt-Peterburg:

Pot 1:
Best opponents are Feyenoord, AEK Athens FC, Club Brugge KV, but AEK Athens FC will be better.

Pot 2:
I think strongest pot.
Best opponent is Besiktas JK.

Pot 3:
Best opponents are NK Dinamo Zagreb, FC Basel 1893, Middlesbrough FC, FC Utrecht, Grazer AK, but Grazer AK will be better.

Pot 4:
Any opponent, may be KS Amica Wronki is best opponent, because of coefficient of Polish league and near Russian Federation.

Good to see a change on here....

Not Everyone wants Rangers!

(usually you all do)

Good win for us midweek, first time I can remember rangers ever turning around a 1st leg defeat.

Best Scenario

Rangers
Besiktas
Utrecht
Steaua Bucharest
Aigeleo

(Besiktas becuase Turkish teams are very poor away from home, Steaua Bucharest for same reason, Utrecht becuase we have a good record in Holland and Aigeleo because they are inexperienced)

nelster, it may feel comforting for you that not everyone have chosen Rangers. But that is just because there is an even lousier team (yes, it's possible) in Pot 1, namely AEK Athen.

Btw, Forza, congrat with Alkmaar. Great effort (four points) even if PAOK have seen better days.

Since I'm a Spain freak, I've got a lot of picks to make!

Parma, Villarreal, Utrecht, Aachen, Dinamo Tbilisi
AEK, Zaragoza, Grazer, Amica Wronki, Beveren
Brujas, Besiktas, Sevilla, Hearts, Austria Viena
Rangers, Sporting, Ath. Bilbao, Heerenveen, Aigaleo

I'll sign for these, but Bilbao against Lazio, Sevilla against Feyenoord, Villarreal against Newcastle, Zaragoza against Stuttgart--wow, I read in World Soccer magazine that this is a dying competition; I just wish I were in Spain so I'd have a chance to see some of these great (possible) matchups!
May the players of all your teams stay healthy, and let's hope to see that the UEFA Cup is not a dying competition! !Viva Espana!

Amica Wronki is a team investing in young, talented players, no like Wisla in known, big players. Amica first squad consists of 5-6 U21 players so this team is probably the youngest team in UEFA Cup. I for them the best draw will be a draw giving a chance to play with the best teams and getting experienced.

Let's see:
For Portuguese teams the best groups would be:

Club Brugge - BENFICA - Sochaux - Hearts - Austria
Rangers - SPORTING - Grazer AK - Amica - Beveren

We need to avoid Spanish and Italian teams for sure, except for Porto, portuguese teams all lose with Spanish and italians. Because of far away trips we'd like to avoid eastern teams. I personaly don't fancy greek teams neither holland. On the other hand, I LOVE french teams (we always win to french teams), and we pretty much like norway, belgium and austrian teams so...
Glasgow and hearts seemed very weak to me too, they played second line portuguese teams, that should have passed, so I eager for "revenge" also.

Ohhh, yeahhh. Norwegian teams, Aliceag. Pick one. Just one. Seeded or not.

Personally I love teams from Faroe Isles. I have picked the wanted Faroe teams in the Norwegian group in UC group stage.

For those not acquainted with bacalao, Porto have been somewhat of a pain in the ass for Rosenborg in CL group stage. 96-97: 0-1 and 0-3. 97-98: 2-0 and 1-1. 2001-02: 1-2 and 0-1. Advantage Porto, to use tennis language.

In addition to that, Molde from Norway in CL group stage in 99--00: 0-1 and 1-3.

But except for Porto.......

Same year Rosenborg mushed Boavista 2-0 at home and 3-0 away.

Norwegian teams have met Portugais clubs once in other European cups last ten years. Viking beat Sporting 3-0 at home and 0-1 in Lisboa.

Norway have always had the advantage to import players from their former 'colonies' in Iceland and Greenland and Svalbard (and Sweden?!?). Portugal have only Brazil, Mocambique(Eusebio) and Angola......

VERY nice to see that nobody wants to see in their group Zenit, certanly this is not that everybody are afraid of it surly not, but this alredy means that Zenit gained its respect from everybody.

Re: best UEFA groups for your teams

Whats the point, Osirius? With respect the other teams don't underestimate you. Is that an advantage? At least not for my team Rosenborg. I love it when other teams think Rosenborg is an easy target (piece of cake). I have had lot of laughs.

I may call Russian football generally a bullshit mafia-sponsored sport, and Zenith just a ephemeral team. What do you care?

Zenith is in there, and as you say, maybe the not wanted team from pot 5. Then it is up to Zenith do deliver.

Anita cheer up,dont'be angry(I don'r know but it seems to me so according to your last answers, the better if i'm wrong). My last expression about Zenit was made cause of real fact, nobody yet put Zenit as a preferrable opponent.A month ago there was a different situation(you may check it from the topics).I'm just glad that it's so!!
About your Rosenborg for last 10 years it proved that it is a solid team and if it played in EC and was in pot with 7 other teams,I don't know what teams should be there in order to put Rosenborg as a prefirrable one..About mafia I don't get YOUR meaning of mafia(will you plz.tell me)

to Anita again
If you beleive everything from newspapers and TV sets, than I may call you 2 things from russian media.
1st is after Russia - Portugal in EURO 2004 where our goalkeeper was dissmissed for nothing.OUR media called this accident as some kind of sabotage and UEFA mafia(DO you remember who was the referee of the match?).
2nd is after Shinnik - Zenit match,Kerzhakov went to Saint-Peterburg by train with his brother and in OUR media appeared information that he is afraid of plains(as Bergkamp).
So don't beleive everything,or you have some other sources of info.?

Re: best UEFA groups for your teams
Author: Dinamo-Zagreb
Date: 03-10-2004, 12:24
For Dinamo Zagreb

AEK/Parma - bad financial status, although Parma has few good players, AEK is very much weak and everyone will charge for a win against them.
Sporting Lisabon - they have proved to be very 'generous' when playing at home against 'weak teams' (2002/2003 - Sporting - Partizan 1:3, 2003/2004 - Sporting - Genclerbirligi 0:3)
Amica Wronki - inexperienced, young, probably weakest team in pot 4 (don't get insulted...) OR
Partizan - our nuice guests (Dinamo Z. - Partizan 5:0 1997.), so stadium will be full, and atmosphere...you just imagine
Ferencvaros - close to us, great support, Hungarians are good for us

worst:

Lazio
Villareal
Dinamo Zagreb
Dnjipro Dnjipropetrowsk
Zenit St. Petersburg

Re: best UEFA groups for your teams
Author: Lunaris
Date: 03-10-2004, 13:10
for GAK:
AEK Athen - Besiktas - GAK - Alemannia Aachen (it's always a pleasure to beat germans) - Dinamo Tiflis

for Austria: Rangers - Zaragoza - Dinamo Zagreb - Amica Wronki (winning again against polish opponents would improve our ranking against poland)

Re: best UEFA groups for your teams
Author: Emperor
Date: 03-10-2004, 17:08
If you think that Dinamo Tbilisi is poor team, you are wrong ! It is a pity that Wisla thought the same in 1st half of first match because 1st half when we were losing 2-0 decided on saying bye bye to UEFA Cup

Re: best UEFA groups for your teams

Anita my dearest, of course I know the history between Norway and Portuguese teams... when I said we love teams from france, norway and belgium is not that we WIN them or they're easy...is just we really love them!
It's a pitty of course norway has no other team in Uefa cup now... perhaps rosenborg later?
Apart from Porto, I recall other nice confrontations between leiria and molde and benfica molde and rosenborg last year. I think I like other teams around norway, like halmstads, midjtyland or brondby... I can't say they're easy, BUT when A draw puts a Portuguese team against a norwegian team (or near) we allways grin
1st - Is far better going north than going east
2nd - Ok, they're not easy, but we always feel we're gonna win, because it's not a spanish team or italian
3rd - People from north are very civilized trim and friendly and very physical contrastant. Just this summer a best friend from me went to sweden and norway and came in awe, with the beautiful cities and the beautiful blonde girls with very white skin and rosie cheeks...

Stating at first again that the draw of the schedule is more important than the draw of the teams this is the ideal Group for Panionios.

Pot A
1)Parma (at home)- a lot of problems, plus the experience gained from disqualifying Udinese.
2)Rangers (away) - not as strong as other years plus a nice trip

Pot B
1)Besiktas (at home) - although a strong team, Turkish teams have an extra problem playing in Greece. Vice-versa, it's my least wanted team to play away.
2)Lille (away) - may be better than other teams in the pot, but the name is less frightening, and that counts a lot in fairly experienced teams as mine.

Pot C
1) Utrecht (at home) - doing well this year but still after the big 3, dutch teams tend to have less than strong defence. (AZ didn't frighten me against PAOK, sorry Forza )
2) Grazer (away) - Just because I think it's the weakest of this pot

Pot E
Dinamo Tbilisi (home and away) - I'm sure they're better than most of us think but still they're surely the least experienced one.

P.S. - I agree, you would be crazy if you didn't want AEK from the first pot for reasons already mentioned, but the same applies if you want Egaleo form the fifth pot - They're really a solid team, playing together for many years, every year a bit better. At this moment at least, I have to admit they're even better than us.

According to the globetting website

the teams are ranked (strongest to weakest in each "pot")

1 - Newcastle,Lazio,Stuttgart,Parma,
Feyenoord,Rangers,Bruges,AEK
2 - Villareal,Auxerre,Schalke,Zaragoza,
Benfica,Besiktas,Sporting,Lille
3 - Bilbao,Middlesbrough,Sevilla,Sochaux,
Basel,D. Zagreb,Grazer,Utrecht
4 - Partizan,Steaua,Panionios,Heerenveen,
Hearts,Dnipro,Amica,Alemannia
5 - Ferencvaros,Standard,Alkmaar,Zenit,
Austria,Aigaleo,Beveren,Tbilisi

However - the 24 expected to qualify are, in order

Newcastle,Lazio,Stuttgart,Bilbao,
Middlesbrough,Parma,Sevilla,Villareal,
Auxerre,Schalke,Feyenoord,Zaragoza,
Benfica,Besiktas,Sochaux,Rangers,
Bruges,AEK,Lille,Krakow,
Basel,Partizan,Standard,Steaua

--------------

comment - since the website is dominated by English betting companies I suspect a slight pro-English bias. For example, Rangers are not a strong team at the moment but I would have thought they have a better chance to win the UC than Middlesbrough. Similarly, I cannot see Newcastle as favourites ahead of Lazio.

--------------

those not to qualify

Panionios,Alkmaar,D.Zagreb,Zenit,
Heerenveen,Austria,Ferencvaros,Hearts,
Grazer,Utrecht,Aigaleo,Dnipro,
Amica,Alemannia,Beveren,Tbilisi

----------

Here it is strange that Alemannia are rated so low. I know they are not in the top German division - but I would have thought they should be able to beat several teams rated above them.

It's harder to find who is expected to finish 3rd in the ECL groups. Taking the 3rd best team in the "Group Winners" betting for each group:

Porto,Bremen,Celtic,Panathinaikos,
Fenerbahce,Ajax,Leverkusen,Olympiakos

Of those teams I suspect Porto, Celtic and Ajax have the best chance of doing well in the UC.

So - a Lazio v Porto final?

Re: best UEFA groups for your teams

I wonder if someone is betting on Krakow to go through. It is a verys strange list, Standard qualify, leaving Panionis and Zenit out, and yes I think also Allemannia is better than they expect? mmm this must be an intersting place to win money from.....

But Porto in the final?? I don't think so. Not the way they are playing now in the CL. It will sooner be Olympiakos-Stuttgart. (And I don't think that will happen)

The website (I'm not being paid to advertise it!) is based on the best and average bets available from a number of different online betting companies.

As with all betting sites, the prices are influenced by the market as well as the bookmaker's assessment of the matches. Hence English teams tend to have a shorter price than one might expect. For example, Arsenal are favourites for the ECL - which is based on their form in the English premiership and the betting this attracts from English betters, not their unimpressive form in recent seasons, including this one, in the ECL.

I'm not sure about Standard - but I would guess there are more betters from Belgium than Greece!

My team Schalke 04.

My favourite draw would be:

Pot 1: Club Brugge (away)

Pot 3: Middlesboro (home)

Pot 4: SC Heerenveen (away)

Pot 5: Austria Wien (home)

actually, there's no team I'm afraid of. I just do not want to have any unattractive eastern european team as opponents again.

Of course, an outsider sometimes does win. However bookmakers are rarely poor so it is worth paying some attention to betting. It is interesting to compare the betting odds with rankings such as the UEFA ones.

To all who wish to have Austria as oponnent for their teams: After end of group stage you will think different and I know what I say. Their Team-coefficient was so low because they played only the last two years in euopean competitions and lost against FC Porto, Olympique Marseille and Borussia Dortmund. This year they are stronger than ever and will be luckier in drawings.

macaskil, where on earth did sporting lisbon go in your table of UEfa? they are not in list of the teams that advance neither in the other... and what is krakow doing there?

About Porto, I have reborn hopes now... the team won for 2 times in a row in the league, this sunday Porto won 3-0 and is getting better and better. I expect them to won both ties agains PSG and the tie against CSKA and that will be enough to go through...if not, by the time they reach uefa cup they'll be far better than now, and they'll be the favourites to win it.

Sporting Lisbon, tied again tonight (and a lucky tie! the goal showed up at minute 92) and it's 5 games in a row without winning... very difficult life to UEFA...
