| Last week, the round of 16 was played in Denmark and it produced some very close matches and a few surprises, though it could easily have been many more.
Randers (II) - Horsens 2-0 B 1909 (III) - Herfølge (II) 5-2 Brøndby - Silkeborg 2-1 Kolding (II) - OB 6-7 pso Lyngby (II) - Esbjerg 4-5 pso Slagelse (III) - FC København 5-6 pso AaB - FC Midtjylland 2-1 ET FREM (II) - Viborg 8-7 pso
So 4 shoot-outs and another game in extra time. Slagelse almost eliminated FC København which would have been the biggest upset in the Danish cup since 1987. Slagelse is currently a bottom team in the 3rd league in Denmark, whereas FC København has 36 points from their first 14 matches in the league. And Slagelse is also the only team this season to score more than 1 goal on FCK, this includes an away game in Brøndby and 2 against HSV.
But the draw for the quarter finals went as follows:
Randers (II) - FREM (II) Brøndby - FC København B 1909 (III) - Esbjerg AaB - OB
The games will be played March 5th andit is worth noticing that Brøndby will play FC København again (minimum 6 games this season) and that we will have at least one team outside the Superliga in the semis when Randers and FREM clash. |

The huge surprise was Dinamo's loss at the hands of second division side Petrolul, as the capital club never missed a cup final in the last 5 years or so and is the trophy holder. The favourites to win the cup are now Rapid and Farul (last season's finalists). |

| Please forgive me if this has been mentioned in another topic, but Sweden and Norway have played cup finals during the past few weeks. In Sweden, champions Djurgården played second division side Åtvidaberg (Ralf Edström anyone?) and won 2-0 to take the double. Nonetheless, Åtvidaberg will still play UEFA Cup football next season, which won't help Sweden's attempt to make it back to top 21.
In Norway, the final was played this Sunday. Lillestrøm from the top half of the league played Molde who will have two play off to stay in the league. This was a hard fought game on a dreadful surface (watch out Czechz) which ended 2-2 after 90 mins. In extra time, Molde stepped it up and ended up 4-2 winners to get something out of the season.
On Saturday 19 November, we will find out if a second Scandinavian country will also field a second division side when Molde has played their second play off match against Moss.
Currently, Denmark has no plans to send a 2nd division side to play European football next season, although we will have at least one second division side in the semis. |

| The clubs that have made it to the last 16 of the Greek Cup are: Olympiakos, Thrasyvoulos, Panahaiki, Ergotelis, Akratitos, Ethnikos, Kalamaria, Ethnikos Asteras, Larissa, Agrotikos Asteras, Xanthi, Niki Volou, Panionios, AEK, Ionikos, Egaleo. It looks like the "British-style" format that they decided to use this year for the Cup works well. 9 first division clubs, 5 second division clubs and 2 third division clubs. |

| @ Forza, I call this hardly a surprise. Like in other countries Domestic cup has lost almost every intrest in Belgium. Most of the (top) teams see it as friendlies (exept in semi + final), played by a B-squad. Anderlecht has a bad reputation if it comes to underestimating this cup. I think it is hardly a surprise to see 12/16 teams left after this first round come from the top league. |

| @putzeijs
Well, I think that even the Anderlecht reserve team should have beaten the last team from division 2 at home, so even if they fielded their reserves, it's still a surprise I think.
By the way, in the Netherlands the Cup isn't very high in prestige, but it almost never happenes that clubs don't field there strongest team. (I do have to point out that top teams (teams that play CL & UEFA-cup) only start at the last-16 stage, so they almost never play really weak teams. I can imagine that when they would play amateur teams, they might field some reserves in stead of their best team)
PS: From next year on the top sides won't have byes anymore to the last 16, but every professional team will have to start in the last 64 stage. |

| The result of the match from the Bulgarian Cup last 32 round between Botev (Plovdiv) and Vihren was annuled and the game will be replayed. The reason is that a Vihren player had received his 5th yellow card in the previous match and had had to be suspended , but the FA had forgotten to officially banned him so he played in the match. The iniatial claim by Botev for a 3:0 win was rejected with no consequences, but later as Botev threatened to appeal in UEFA , the FA changed their decision and ordered a replay as it was neither club's fault but their own. To make the situation even more ridiculous the player has already served his ban in the Saturday league game and he will be eligable for the replay. |
