Off-topic, I know, but a great paradigm of the way things are done in Serbian football.

After Partizan lost against Artmedia and Maccabi PT a group of fans (several thousand) expressed openly their dissatisfaction wanting the coach and the board (main club’s body) to resign. The coach did resign but that fan group said they will boycott Partizan’s matches as they thought deeper changes were needed. So the board held a meeting evaluating their own work (boards own work). The board concluded that they (the board itself) were doing great job indeed and there was no need to really change anything except blaming the coach. And a member of Partizan staff (a guy called Novakovic) gave a 60 minute interview on TV saying that the angry fans were manipulated, bought for money and that the club does not need such fans anyway. Naturally the board was not to blame for anything (two years ago Partizan played in CL GS, last year in UC GC and this year is out already. But what the hell – there is always next year and the board is never wrong).

Similar situation was in Red Star too. Our ex-main man Dzajic was Red Stars head for 25 years. Luckily for us he resigned last year after a similar outcry from our fans after we lost to PSV and Zenit.Present Partizans main people (Bjekovic, Zecevic and Curkovic) are there for about two decades. And who knows how long they will be there. Partizan having no owners is for all practical purposes owned by them. This example clearly shows why leading people in Serbian clubs defy privatization. And the politicians seems to have more important things then to worry about a bunch of people running on the pitch in funny clothes chasing a ball.

Of course, in some concrete occasion the board could be right but the point is that it could never be wrong. And the years go by...

By the way, new Partizan's coach is Rebber from Germany. What's your oppinion of him?

Are the clubs in Serbia still not private??? Weird!

Rebber? Are you sure about that name? I'm from Germany and I've never heard of him.

I do not know German spelling. It is something like Jurgen Reber.

Perhaps Juergen Roeber?

Nothing on Roeber yet? Ex Hertha and Stuttgart coach? Here in the press he is not very appreciated. Some say that Roeber coaching Partizan is the best thing that happened to Red Star. Surely he is not that bad?

Rober had been coach of Hertha Berlin for 6 years so he can't be that bad... Some things for Jurgen Rober from skysports:

Former Wolfsburg and Hertha Berlin coach Jurgen Rober has spoken of his excitement having been named as the new coach of Serbian giants Partizan Belgrade.
Rober has put pen-to-paper on a one-year contract which includes the option of another year, should the 51-year-old prove to be a hit in the capital.
''I have a strong team and the club has a superb youth academy, they are like Serbia's Bayern Munich,'' beamed Rober.
Rober, who was looking for a new job since being sacked by Wolfsburg in April 2004, is keen to lead Partizan back to European glory after the club failed to qualify for the UEFA Champions League and were also knocked out of the Uefa Cup this year.
''There's no doubt, a club like Partizan must have the aim to qualify for the Champions League,'' he concluded.
"This club has a good team, a fantastic environment and must win the Serbian championship this season.
"We will give OFK Belgrade and Red Star a real run for their money and we have a realistic chance of qualifying for the Champions League.''
Partizan have already previously been managed by a German - with Lothar Matthaus having had a spell at the helm in 2002/03.

thanks seso

any coach that trained teams from big 5 is welcomed in Serbia. The guy is just unfortunate because Partizan is in big crisis now losing several matches in a row. Yesterday they were eliminated from SCG cup by a third level team. As a new coach he is not to blame (not yet anyway). It is really interesting how Partizan still cannot recover from Maccabi PT knockout.

He is a good one. His only problem was that he always hired to clubs whose expectations were too high. He was the Hertha coach when they had their most successful time (incl. 2nd group phase of Champions League) but got sacked because they said he doesn't fit to 'world city club' like Hertha... Never again, they were as successful as under Röber. And Wolfsburg, they almost traditionally have higher expectations than they can fulfill.

Sorry, ignjat, didn't see your question until now.

I can confirm JeanBaguette concerning Hertha and Wolfsburg. Adding something more, Röber led Hertha from the 2nd division where they crawled for several years before, to the 1st division and a few years later into the CL. Later he failed as he could not repeat this success in the following years. You know, in our capital city, they want to be the capital club. Will work never.

Röber is definitely an acribic worker who has a lot of knowledge of the game and is not bad in tactics. I would say that his biggest deficit is that he's not that great motivator for his players. Furthermore, he had problems in Berlin with the (there mighty) yellow press as he does not sell himself at the best. Maybe, that could be the same problem in Belgrade.

Well, it?s certainly tough to be comparing the western clubs of any country with those of todays Serbia & Montenegro.

Without neccessary privatisation the football scene on grass fields of SCG would sadly see just a rare momentum that doesn?t last long and is far from mirroring its past success from what have Crvena Zvezda and Partizan achieved in their longish history.

Obvious to everyone is that arrival of legendary Dragan Stojkovic Pixi as a new leader of FK Crvena Zvezda ( FC Red Star Belgrade) at present and its near future proves those times of privatisation are moving closer to bringing serbian football towards the reality frames of sport today. Other clubs in SCG must follow Pixi?s fabulous example..

Give him a few years and inevitably the regulation books will be written in favour of a modern and protected football in whole Serbia & Montenegro, and not only within Crvena Zvezda.

Money is the main issue for improving the sport, but not the sole. We like it or not, dosh has killed the feeling for the game itself and todays Real Madrid and Chelsea are good examples of what the football is not and shouldn?t be about..

I?d like to add something I heard today..

Eurosport has chosen as the main match of the next UEFA Cup round been played on coming Thursday 3rd of November, the game in Belgrade between Crvena Zvezda and Basel. Yet another proof that serbian football is returning to better days..

It?s a shame this derby will be played before the empty stadion, as Red Star must comply to strict UEFA regulation book and pay penalty for their supporters messing about in previous games.

I hope this would be the very last time it happens, because even though Basel is not at its best, they?ll have a huge support in playing without fans presence.

On the other hand, Crvena Zvezda should start their UEFA group stage with the win, as Nikola Zigic, Perovic, Jankovic and Purovic are in brilliant scoring form..
