How to explain the fact that Strasbourg is the LAST in French League(without a single win!) but playing very well in UEFA Cup and it is already qualified for the next round?

How do you explain that Liverpool last year was able to beat teams like Juventus, Chelsea or Milan while at the same time they finished at a very disappointing 5th place in the English Premier League ?

It's simply different competitions.

Concerning Strasbourg, and following the french league very very closely, I can affirm that anyways, the teams in bad positiuons in the Ligue 1 are very better than in different countries (includiing England, Italy or Spain). Strasbourg and Metz and Ajaccio never would have to struggle for life in another championship (that doesnt' mean that the french ist the best, probably the top-teams are not, but in average, it is the best no doubt),
But evebn considering thiy, the fact Strasbourg hasnt won a single game ist surprising.......

I'd say this just happens. Look at Parma last year, they reached the semi-finals in the Uefa-Cup but barely managed to stay in the Serie A.

@Malko: If French teams are so much better than others, how do you explain Rennes?

I'm not interested in such discussions, but as we speak about Rennes, we also should say that they beat Osasuna who currently are at the top of the Liga.

With all Leagues playing with 7-8 clubs in Europe every year, we all enough material to illustrate any possible conclusion.

It is true that rennes, after beating osasuna in Intertoto, failed totally its UEFA-cup-campagn.......
It's even astonishing, but as Lyonnais sais, among 8 teams, 1 which is really failing (well, maybe Auxerre, ...) tha's not a catastrophy.....
Anyways, Lyon, Lens, Monaco, Marseille and Strasbourg finished first of their groups.....

Lens finished second behind Steaua. But anyway, apart from Lyon, the majority of French clubs was though not impressive at least quite efficient. Which is the only thing that counts. I won't enter the pointless discussion about which leagues have the best bottom part of the league, or even the best second league. Just remember Aachen-Lille last year... (I couldn't resist )

i think that the french league has a very balanced competition, the most balanced in europe, every year they send 6-8 teams, and always a lot of different teams, offcourse you have a few regular teams like lyon, monaco, but that's it.

in engeland and spain and germany , everybody knows that there are at the beginning of the season that from each country are +- 4 fixed teams.

The frech league has the most balanced teams but for the most competetive league, it is for years spain. The champion of spain, has every year only 2/3 of the points possible, so from 38 matches, 76 points and you are champion, in the other leagues that is not enough, and the bottom of spain has also every year a lot of points.
( uefaranking is the best evidence that spain has the topleague )

As I heard bosnian coach Mehmed Bazdarevic will take position of manager of Strassbourg. He is very succesfull coach and I wish them all the best, especialy because I am very often in SXB and I am SXB fun in French league.
Of course Bazdarevic was one of the best players in history of my favorite team Zeljeznicar. Two links for best wishes.
