Edited by: spoonman at: 06-05-2006, 18:30 | Bayern Munich have just won their 20th German championship title. A 1-1 draw in Kaiserslautern was all they needed to clinch ist, while 2nd placed Hamburger SV suffered a 2-4 defeat at Hertha Berlin.
This is the first time ever in the history of Germany's Bundesliga that a club has won two consecutive doubles (leage and cup title). In total, this is Bayern's sixth double.
One matchday before the end of the Bundesliga season, there's still a lot of suspense in the race for 2nd place: After their loss in Berlin, Hamburg is now just one point ahead of Werder Bremen who thrashed Cologne 6-0, and both teams will meet in Hamburg next Saturday for a thrilling final.
And there will be another tough final in the relegation zone: Kaiserslautern (currently 16th with 32 points) will play host to Wolfsburg (33 pts). Cologne and Duisburg have already been relegated.
Current Bundesliga table after 33 matches:
01. Bayern Muenchen (74) --> CL GS 02. Hamburger SV (68) --> CL GS or QR3 03. Werder Bremen (67) --> CL GS or QR3 04. Schalke 04 (58) --> UC R1 05. Bayer Leverkusen (51, goals: 62-47) --> probably UC R1 06. Hertha BSC (48, goals: 51-46) --> IT? 07. Borussia Dortmund (45, goals: 42-39 ) --> IT? 08. VfB Stuttgart (43) ::::: 14. Eintracht Frankfurt (36) 15. VfL Wolfsburg (33) 16. 1.FC Kaiserslautern (32) 17. 1.FC Koeln (27) --> relegated 18. MSV Duisburg (26) --> relegated
Eintracht Frankfurt qualify for UEFA Cup as losing cup finalists. Alemannia Aachen and VfL Bochum have already been promoted; the third promoted club will either be Cottbus (55 pts with 2 matches to go), Greuther Fuerth (51), Karlsruhe (50), or Freiburg (50). |

| I think there will be much more doubles in the coming years. bayern is really dominating this championship now. There is really no concurrence to the Munich team these days. (an d Munich is not European top)I have seen some games today and the regression in UEFA-ranking of the Bundesliga is a very logical thing if you see the level of the games nowadays. The double is not a surprise for me...they wanted a triple...the Championsleague, which definately is out of reach for a german team |

I appreciate your wise comments, though. Since you follow the championships of France and Luxembourg very closely, you must know a lot about the effect of one team dominating the league for a couple of years.
But there is one difference: Bayern has been dominating the Bundesliga more or less for thirty years now. They won three titles in a row in the 70s and again in the 80s. Does this say anything about the strength of the Bundesliga as a whole? No, it doesn't.
Putting all that aside, you'll be pleased to hear that Uli Hoeness (Bayern's managing director) has conceded that Bayern cannot and will not keep up with the loads of money that some other European clubs are spending on players. His principle is not to put Bayern's long-term economical welfare at risk for short-term sporting success. This means that Bayern will see themselves as a kind of "underdog" in the CL in the next few years. Last year, Hoeness declared that he wanted to win the CL and now he's realised that this was a mistake because it created a lot of public pressure. Today he's said that Bayern are financially not in a position to say: "We are going to win the Champions League."
You might rejoice now and see this as the unconditional surrender of German football. But rest assured that Bayern will always be capable of reaching the last eight or even the last four of the CL. And once you've come that far, everything is possible. Just think of Liverpool, or Monaco, or Leverkusen. |

| What Bayern will be able too or not is depending on many facts: (as for other teams). But it will be important (same than in other countries) that the owen championship stays on a more than fair level. See teams like anderlecht, a top-team in the seventies and early eighties, or even bruges cannot compete anymore on a higher level, even if they can buy all the best belgiam players they want...because of belgian championship regressd from year tot year now for 20 years.....Bundesliga must look out not to follow the same way, cause what we see actually is not really top-football..... You tell me i often speak of France. it's sure...bur just look at the games yesterday on the Canal-Plus-Multiplex....genious goals you saw on nearly every ground....if you didn't see, look at Eurogoals...it's worth and it shows what i wanted to say |
