Edited by: Marko_Bgd at: 22-06-2006, 03:41 | The draw will be held on Friday 12:00! Your predictions, your hopes... If there is anyone who is not sure which teams are seeded, you can take a look at: http://www.xs4all.nl/~kassiesa/bert/uefa/seedcl2006.html
And I hope that Red Star will not plat against Salzburg or Mlada Bolesav in second round of qualification. Any other opponent would be just fine, but those teams I've mentioned are capable of beating seeded teams and taking over their position as seeded in 3rd round. This will happen if they win on aggregate against Steaua, Dinamo Kyev or Levski. |

| The media did it again!! They're saying the most dangerous teams for Steaua in QR2 are the champions of the Czech Republic (Mlada Boleslav) and the champions of Austria (SV Salzburg)
Speaking of the "fresh champions" of Austria , they have Trappatoni and Matheus as their coaches, so I guess they really do mean business. |

| Salzburg is not the austrian champion, that's Austria Wien . and yes, Salzburg really want to enter the CL, i think they got around 15 millionen to spend for transfers this summer. the most prominent players that will play in Salzburg next season are croatia' captain Nico Kovac (Hertha Berlin), Johan Vonlanthen (PSV) and Karel Pitak (Slavia Prag captain). |

| Hearts enter the Champions tournament for the 1st time since 1960. Their record is
1958-9 Standard Liege 1-5,2-1 1960-1 Benfica 1-2,0-3 (Benfica won the Cup this season)
Top goalscorer Willie Bauld, 2. Bauld is the player who hit the bar for Scotland v England in 1950, the 0-1 result meaning Scotland didn't travel to the World Cup that year, owing to the Scottish FA not wishing to appear unless as British champions.
Record attendance 39,000 v Standard
I guess Hearts would want to avoid Salzburg, Boleslav, possibly Ruzomberok (remember Artmedia!). They "should" beat any of the others - but then again - MyPa have beaten 2 Scottish teams in the past, and FH have done this once.
As usual, a few strong teams are in QR2 - Steua, Dynamo Kiev, Fenerbahce, Spartak, Levski. They should all go through - but most years produce a surprise result or two. |

| Salzbourg is the horror for everyone. I am sure alot of teams in the 3rd round will have hell against this team. They have lots of money and serious ambitions. M.Boleslav come a close second, Czech teams are always difficult to play, especially in the second round preliminary round. |

| One more thing regarding Salzburg... They have just bought Milan Dudic from FC Red Star Belgrade and if you have seen last night's WC match CIV-SCG you have seen two amazing handball(or voleyball) moves by that player that produced two penalty kicks for CIV. And to be honest, I don't really believe that money is all you need in order to make a good team. Many new players, new coach... It may take a little time before it all starts working perfectly for them. Nevertheless, I hope that Red Star will avoid playing against Salzburg in 2nd round. |

| In second qualifying round I think that Steaua can't be beaten... Don't forget that Steaua will play again after 7 months on home stadium Ghencea where is very hard for anyone to win. In last 2-3 years nobody beaten Steaua on Ghencea stadium. In QR3 there is only one team that can be equal with Steaua and that is Fiorentina. |

Except for the mighty Gloria Bistrita, Politehnica Iasi and FK Zeleznik . Actually they should be worried especially in QR2, because Steaua has more problems with small to medium teams and less with large ones. |

Maybe you are right But don't forget the determination of every little team that plays with Steaua. But now Steaua has alot of experience in Europe (30 matches in last 2 years), so it will be no difficult to reach the group stage. In the group stage we'll see the real value of Steaua. So, I can hardly wait a game Steaua-Barcelona or Steaua-Real Madrid. |

Actually I don't fear Salzburg so much (I do want Steaua to qualify); teams with players who are together for many years and with lower budgets (they are "hungry") look more dangerous (Mlada Boleslav, Sheriff Tiraspol). Anyway Steaua shouldn't really have any troubles in QR2. Otherwise.... |

| So, who is most likely to provide the early surprises of the new European season?
I would say the three known matches in R2 should be fairly tight - not a major shock whoever wins. But in all seven seasons since the current qualifying format began at least one team (sometimes two) has made it from QR1 to QR3.
Who is most likely to do so this year?
The only team in the 1st round draw to have done so before is NK Gorica - who knocked out FC Kobenhavn in the 2004-05 season. They have drawn the highest seed in QR2 though.
Taking countries as opposed to actual clubs. A Cypriot team has reached QR3 three times in the period (starting in QR2 once). Only one notable victory over obviously superior (on paper) opposition as Famagusta put Trabzonspor out last year. Red Star may remember a narrow triumph over Omonia Nicosia back in 2001 too. Other obvious shocks at this stage historically by country. A Latvian team beat a Romanian team in 1999-2000, a Bosnian team beat a Norweigien one in 2002-03, Macedonia beat Russia in 2003-04, Ireland beat Croatia in 2004-05.
Without knowing too much about the relative strengths of the teams perhaps FC Kobenhavn look the most vulnerable. They have fallen at this stage before and their likely opponents Mypa did put Dundee United out of last season's UEFA Cup. |

| I was reading this about FC Sheriff Tiraspol in wikipedia (Tiraspol is the name of the city and Sheriff the company that owns it): "Sheriff is a company based in Tiraspol, Transnistria, a break-away republic in the Republic of Moldova. It owns a chain of petrol stations, a chain of supermarkets, a TV channel, a publishing house, a construction company, a Mercedes-Benz dealer, an advertising agency, a spirits factory, a few bread factories, a casino, a mobile phone network, the football club FC Sheriff Tiraspol and its newly built stadium and sport complex, at an estimated cost of $200 million including a five-star hotel. The name came from the two founders of the company, who were previously Soviet police officers. According to BBC, Sheriff enjoys advantages from the Transnistrian government, including tax breaks and the right to use hard currency (instead of Transnistrian roubles like the other companies). The owner is believed to be the son of president Igor Smirnov, Vladimir Smirnov, who Washington Times names "the major silent partner" in Sheriff. Both Vladimir Smirnov and Igor Smirnov vehemently deny this. According to Moldova's Jurnal de Chiºinãu, it is claimed that the Sheriff company might be a money laundering scheme, used by Vladimir Smirnov (who is also the head of the Transnistrian customs) to cover the money obtained from trafficking of cigarettes, arms, drugs and alcohol. Sheriff has denied this, calling it a fabrication and Moldovan "black propaganda"." It also says that Transnistria is the poorest region of Europe. |
