CL Title Holders spot

Sorry if this has already been discussed, I can't find reference to it anywhere....

As Liverpool or Milan will finish in either 3rd or 4th in their leagues, when one wins the CL does their country get 3 automatic spots in the groups, or would Chelsea/Roma get shunted down to QR3?

I expect it would be the latter but can't find it confimed anywhere!

Cheers
Mike.

If Milan wins the CL and finishes out of top 4, it'll take the place of the fourth team in Serie A and 4th placed team in its part reaches the UC. If it's Liverpool's triumph - nothing to be changed - Liverpool is already in CL.

EDIT:

Liverpool will definitely participate in 3QR but Milan has got a chance to reach the CL without QRs - well good topic...

Yes, but doesn't the CL title holder automatically go into the group stage?

If so, and using a Liverpool victory as an example, would Liverpool take one of the 2 automatic spots for England, or would they be in addition to them?

OK this a table:

Liverpool will definitely participate in QR of CL.
Milan - CL triumph - reaches the QR spot -> will take part in the 3QR the next season
Milan - CL triumph - reaches the UC spot -> changes place with 4th team (not in Serie A but for the UEFA) and reaches the CL 3QR
Milan - CL triumph - out of zone of Eurocups -> will use the title-holder spot and reaches the GS.

So am I misreading Berts access list page where he has the TH (title holders) in the group stage column?

You are saying that Liverpool or Milan will still have to play qualifying rounds if they win the CL.

If the defending cup-holder does not finish in a qualifying place in their domestic competition they will come in at the expense of the last-placed side of that association

It means that the association sacrifice 4th team to give the last spot to title-holder.

mikesha:

The CL TH will {b>always{/b> have a place guaranteed in GS. One of Liverpool or Milan will definetely play in GS, but this will {b>NOT{/b> be at the expense of any team from the same association already qualified for GS. I hope I was clear.

Well, I don't think so. Maybe Bert judge us?

Kaiser

Read again what you quoted: {i>If the defending cup-holder does not finish in a qualifying place in their domestic competition {/i>

But Milan or Liverpool WILL finish in a qualifying position (this includes QR). That rule would've applied if those 2 would've finished below 4th.

Well, I got it. I know that that they guaranteed a place for CL via domestic. And unless Milan reaches the CL (I know it's impossible due their difference between the 5th place)

Thanks for the info guys. Does this not mean that there will be 17 teams automatically in the groups and only 15 places up for grabs in QR3? Surely that won't work either!!!

Well, you didn't read carefully. There are always 16 teams qualified straightly to the GS and always 32 teams in 3QR. If a title-holder isn't used for a team that won the previous CL and didn't reach the Eurocups' zone that goes:

Champions from countries ranked 26-27 are shifting to 2QR
Champion from country ranked 16 is shifting to 3QR
Champion from country ranked 10 is shifting to GS

That's easy

My mistake!! Got it now - the 16 automatic spots include the title holder, so either England or Italy will have 3 teams straight in to the group stages and only one in QR3.

It took me a while but I got there in the end!! Thanks for the advice.
