If they hold on, they'll lead second-place Alavés by three points plus H2H. They not only hold on, they increase the margin, as Rubén Peña scores at 59' to make it 0-3. Week 29 takes us into the final third of the season

Sat. 12 March

18:00

Numancia 3, Bilbao Ath. 2 They tied 0-0 in San Mamés in Oct. Numancia has fallen to 15th place, eight points above the drop and eight points below the playoffs. Bilbao is in last place, nine points from escape from the drop. Villalibre gives the visitors the lead at 6'; Alex Alegría ties at 43' for Numancia. Julio Alvarez scores at 51' and again with a pk at 67' to make it 3-1; Guarrotxena cuts it to 3-2 at 80' with a pk.

Zaragoza 1, Albacete 0 Zaragoza won 1-3 in the Carlos Belmonte in Oct. Zaragoza is seventh, one point from a playoff spot. Alba has fallen to 20th place, four points from escape from the drop. Last ditch win for Zaragoza, as Sergio Gil comes through at 93' with the winner. Zaragoza climbs, for the moment, to fifth place with the win.

Almería 1, Girona 0 They tied 1-1 in Montilivi in Oct. Almería is the top of the drop, three points from the lowest team not in the drop. Girona has climbed to ninth place, just three points from a playoff spot. Kike gives Almería the lead at 15'. Girona was better but Almería wins it to tie Mallorca and Huesca (both yet to play) on points--Almería is still in the drop on GD.

Mirandés 1, Elche 0 Mirandés blew 'em out 1-4 in the Martínez Valero in Oct. Mirandés has fallen to 10th place, three points back of the playoffs. Elche trails Mirandés only on GD. Kijera gives Mirandés the lead at 43'. Sergio León, top scorer in Second Division with 17 goals scored after today, comes through at 59' and 65' to win it for Elche.

Oviedo 2, Valladolid 4 Oviedo won 2-3 in the Nuevo Zorrilla in Oct. Despite their first loss in a dozen games, Oviedo retained third place last weekend. Valladolid is now five points back of a playoff spot. At 15', Juan Villar gives Valladolid the lead--0-1. At 20', Mamadou Koné ties for Oviedo--1-1. At 23', Villar puts Valladolid back in front--1-2. At 30', Roger makes it 1-3. And Juan Villar completes a hat trick at 52', pretty much icing it. Mamadou Koné does get one back at 66', but the final is 2-4. Oviedo is likely to drop a couple of places tomorrow.

Sun. 13 March

Osasuna 3, Alavés 1 Game of the Week. Alavés won 3-0 in Mendizorroza in Oct. Alavés is in second place; they haven't scored in their last two games. Osasuna is in the last playoff spot; probably have to win to avoid dropping out of the playoff spots. Not long ago, Alavés looked like a lock for automatic promotion, but they're now 0-3-2 in their last five games; while they're still in second place, they play in Córdoba the last weekend in March, and a loss there could leave them . . . well, things are so tight that they could actually drop out of the playoffs if they lose their next two. In this game, they took the lead on a goal by Raúl García at 19', but then Roberto Torres converted a pk at 26'--1-1--; Urko Vera made it 2-1 at 42'; and Nino made it 3-1 at 45'. Osasuna thus assures themselves a playoff spot at week's end, currently even on points with Oviedo and Córdoba (the latter yet to play) in third place.

17:00

Huesca 1, Alcorcón 0 Huesca won 0-1 in Santo Domingo in Oct. Huesca is three points above the drop. Alcor is one point below a playoff spot. Jesús Valentín scores the winner at 28' for Huesca.

Nástic 1, Ponferradina 1 They tied 2-2 in the Toralín in Oct. Nástic is in fifth place, five points shy of an automatic promotion spot. Ponfe won for the first time in months last weekend; they're now four points above the drop. An own goal by Molina at 3' makes it 0-1; Naranjo ties for Nástic at 49'.

Córdoba 1, Lugo 2 Córdoba won 1-2 in the Anxo Carro in Oct. Córdoba is fourth, three points from an automatic playoff spot. Lugo is four points shy of a playoff spot. Another home loss for Córdoba, as Carlos Fernández at 10' and Caballero at 31' give Lugo a lead of 0-2; Florín Andone cuts the margin at 61', but Lugo holds on.

Llagostera 3, Mallorca 0 Mallorca won 1-0 in Son Moix in Oct. Llago is next-to-last, eight points back of Mallorca and (relative) safety. Mallorca is three points above the drop. Juanjo at 31' and 61' and Pitu at 58' give Llago some hope, although they're still deep in the drop, into which Mallorca falls with this loss on GD, although they'll make up a game-in-hand on Wednesday.

Leganés 0, Tenerife 1 They tied 0-0 in the Heliodoro Rodríguez López in Oct. Leganés is seemingly on a march straight to First Division. They now have a six-point lead over third-place Oviedo. They've won four in a row at a time when their direct rivals are having problems with consistency. Tete is 14th, six points below a playoff spot. as Leganés loses at home for the first time in one year minus one day. Javi Lara scored for Tete with a free kick at 63'. Coulda been worse, as Tete missed a pk at 73'. All of the top four teams in Second Divisiion lose this weekend--and the fifth place team tied, so rankings change little.

Edit: Wednesday's make-up game produced the following result  Huesca 1, Mallorca 2 Sissoko at 13' and Joan Oriol at 22' gave Mallorca a lead of 0-2; Samuel Saiz came with too little, too late at 90' to make it 1-2 at the final whistle.

Results now added to "The drop" above.

Week 32:

Sat. 2 Apr:

18:00:

Alcorcon 1, Mirandes 0 Alcor is two points back of playoffs, Mirandes is a point further back.

Elche 2, Zaragoza 1 Big game for visitors, a point back of playoffs. Zaragoza took an early lead, but Sergio Leon scored twice to give Elche the win.

Mallorca 3, Leganes 0 Leganes needs win to stay in first place. Two games ago, the Pepineros were flying high, but two losses mean they could fall behind Alaves and be even with Nastic after Sunday's games.

Ponferradina-Llagostera Both fight to avoid drop.

Sun. 3 Apr:

Nastic 4, Cordoba 4 Game of the week--#3 takes on #6. Game lives up to its billing and then some, as Cordoba takes the lead on four occasions, but Nastic comes back to tie each time. Achille Emana scored the definitive tying goal with a pk at 87'; Florin Andone had a hat trick for Cordoba. Nastic fails to climb into an automatic promo spot.

17:00:

Girona 0, Osasuna 0 Girona makes strong push for playoffs.

Numancia 3, Huesca 2

Tenerife 1, Lugo 0

Valladolid 1, Almeria 1

Albacete 0, Alaves 1 Visitors need win to stay in automatic promo spot. And win they did! And they retook first place in the bargain!

Bilbao Ath. 2, Oviedo 1 San Mames not available until Monday; RFEF refuses permission to hold game in alternative site. Horrid result for Oviedo: misses huge chance to solidify position or move up.

Real seeking for CL-revenge...I'm afraid Eibar is the poor victim today...3-0 already after 20 minutes. Please don't repeat on tuesday :D

Leganes with a big win to stay on top; Alaves ties to stay in automatic promo; Girona with a big road win . . . and Oviedo blows a big chance, losing at home to relegation-threatened Huesca.
