Week 30 approaches

Nástic 1, Elche 3 Nastic has climbed to 15th place, three points above the drop. Elche is in mid-table, three points ahead of Nástic. They tied 4-4  in the Martínez Valero in Oct.

Sat. 18 March

Córdoba 0, Numancia 0 Córdoba is three points above the drop; they're #18. Numancia is in mid-table, seven points above the drop, seven points shy of the playoffs. They tied 1-1 in Los Pajaritos in Oct.

18:00

Huesca 2, Mallorca 1 Huesca is one place and four points back of the playoffs. Mallorca is the top of the drop. Mallorca won 3-0 in Son Moix in Oct.

UCAM 2, Getafe 0 UCAM is three points above the drop. Geta is in the last playoff spot. Geta won 2-0 in the Alfonso Pérez in Oct.

Lugo 2, Mirandes 1 Lugo is in mid-table. Mirandés is last, but only four points from the lowest teams not in the drop. They tied 2-2 in Anduva in Oct.

Zaragoza 1, Sevilla At. 2 Zaragoza is five points above the drop and nine points below the playoffs. Sevilla At. is one point and one place ahead of Zaragoza. Sevilla At. won 2-1 in Oct. Another contretemps for Zaragoza!

Sun. 19 March

Levante 1, Almería 0 Levante is the runaway leader, seven points above second place; more importantly, they're 18 points above third place (the top two win automatic promotion). Almería is in the drop, four points back of four teams tied for "just above the drop." They tied 2-2 in the Juegos Mediterráneos in Oct. Another win for Levante!

Alcorcón 1, Valladolid 2 Alcor is three points above the drop. Valladolid is five points back of the playoffs. Valladolid won 2-0 in the Nuevo Zorrilla in Oct.

Tenerife 0, Reus 1 Tete is still unbeaten at home. They're fourth, but 12 points below second place and automatic promotion. Reus is in mid-table. They tied 0-0 in Reus in Oct. Tete's unbeaten home streak ends.

Girona 1, Cádiz 2 Girona is second, with an 11-point lead over third-place Cádiz in the quest for automatic promotion. They tied 0-0 in the Ramón de Carranza in Oct. Oh, yeah  Game of the Week :!: Cádiz still has a shot at automatic promotion after breaking Girona's unbeaten home streak.

Rayo 2, Oviedo 0 The two teams I root for most in Second Division. Rayo :mol: is next-to-last; seems like we can't win for losin'.  Oviedo has a real chance at promotion, but they'll have to do it the hard way: through the playoffs. Right now, they're in fifth place, six points above the highest team not in the playoffs, and 12 points shy of automatic promotion. If the playoffs started today, they'd play Tenerife; if they got by Tenerife they'd play the winner of Cádiz-Getafe. Oviedo beat Rayo 2-0 in the Nuevo Carlos Tartiere in Oct. This win isn't enough to get Rayo out of the drop, but it's a good start.

Week 3

Sat. 25 March

16:00 Valladolid 1, Nastic 2 Barreiro wins it for Nastic, as Valladolid blows a chance to move into a playoff spot. Nastic assures they will finish the weekend above the drop.

18:00 Numancia 0, Rayo 0 A point is almost surely enough to lift us out of the drop when the weekend games end.

18:00 Almería 3, Alcorcon 1 Quique hits two to lift Almería--but it's not enough to lift them above the drop.

20:30 Mallorca 1, Levante 1 real Can Levante continue their record pace? Oops! Levante down to 10 men and Ansotegui ties it for Mallorca. Mallorca holds on for an important point, although they remain in the drop.

20:45 Oviedo 2, Girona 0 Co-Game of the Week. Can Oviedo gain ground on the second-place team? And Toche gives Oviedo the lead early in the second half. 16,048 (popular prices) see Toche score again 8' after his first. Big win for Oviedo in their quest for promotion--now back in fourth place.

Sun. 26 March

12:00 Getafe 2, Lugo 0 Geta rolls over Lugo; assures that they will finish the weekend in a playoff spot.

16:00 Cádiz 0, Tenerife 1 Co-Game of the Week. Looked as though a scoreless tie was in the cards until Amath struck for Tete at 87'. This keeps Tete in third place, just a point back of Cádiz now, and keeps Cádiz from gaining ground on second- place Girona.

18:00 Reus 0, UCAM 0

18:00 Mirandes 1, Huesca 3 Huesca stays in the playoff hunt; Mirandes looks like toast.

18:00 Sevilla At. 1, Córdoba 0 Córdoba only a point above relegation.

20:30 Elche 0, Zaragoza 3 Every time it looks as though Elche might challenge for the playoffs, they have a game like this. Every time it looks as though Zaragoza is toast, they rebound like this.

Just a side-note from Second Division "B": Barsa's "B" team ran up a 12-0 win over last-place Eldense today.  Even at third level, that kind of score turns up once in a very great while.
Edit: And indeed, marca.com informs us that this ties the all-time record of 12-0, set in 1993 by Extremadura of Almendralejo against Portuense of Puerto de Santa Maria.
