With Tikhonov as a coach? One of the greatest player Russia ever produced in my eyes, no wonder.

Rostov, where is the money?
September 22, 2016 by Toke Møller Theilade

For most smaller, clubs reaching the Promised Land that is the Champions League group stage means they are financially set for many years to come. For FC Rostov however, the situation is quite different.

Following Rostov’s 4-0 defeat to Dinamo Moscow in the Russian Cup Wednesday, head coach Ivan Danilyants was asked about the club’s financial state and his news wasn’t good.

“The salaries for July were the last one paid,” he told the reporters, adding that “Debts from the seasons 14/15, 15/16 and 16/17 remains unpaid.”

Last season, Rostov depended on multiple cash injections from sugar daddy Ivan Savvidis to get through the season without going bankrupt, but this season things were expected to be different.

In March, they signed a sponsorship contract with one of Russia’s biggest private companies, Savvidis’ AGROCOM Group, and although the Greek-Russian business man publicly has considered backing out of the deal, it did invest enough money in Rostov for the club to meet UEFA’s demands for the Champions League as explained by Savvidis in July.

Since then, Rostov have gone through a successful qualification campaign to the Champions League, even selling out their stadium twice for the games against Ajax and Anderlecht, and by reaching the group stage they earned €14 million.

On top of this, the club from Southern Russia have sold Russian international Ivan Novoseltsev to Zenit St. Petersburg for €10 million and Angolan central defender Bastos to Lazio for €6.5 million, while only spending €3 million themselves on players according to Transfermarkt. Although they probably have given players such as Vladimir Granat, Maksim Grigoriev and Papa Gueye some good signing-on fees, it is clear that their transfers this summer have earned them a significant sum nevertheless.

This makes Danilyants’ comments even more interesting as Rostov aren’t one of the big spenders in the Russian market, although they did sign former English wonder kid David Bentley once, which means they should have plenty of money today. For example, Rostov didn’t have a single player in the top 70 best-paid players in Russia published by Sports.ru in December last year.

Instead, however, the Yellow-Blue players remain unpaid despite having been huge successes on the pitch for more than a year now, and perhaps they’ll soon have to boycott practice or even games as we saw last season when the board withheld their money for too long.

This is quite funny. Zenit plays AZ on Thursday and we also gave away a 2-0 this weekend to end up at 2-2. So both teams have something to prove on Thursday.

I expect 5-6 points realistically this round. I think Zenit will win (Alkmaar), but the other 3 have tricky games. I give Krasnodar the better odds to win (Nice), but Rostov could also surprise again (PSV). CSKA could win, draw or lose (Tottenham). If none of them lose and 1 or 2 win, already a satisfactory return. I`ve predicted 4 wins, yeah in my wet dream.

Only CSKA disappointed, I don`t blame Rostov, they`ve already delivered more than anybody could expect. 5 points are decent, but both CSKA and Rostov have a mountain to climb now. Kudos to Zenit and especially Krasnodar, great jobs!

Rostov took a very important point. Now they have more than two monthes to fix their defense line before the last matchday. Unfortunately I still can not realize how CSKA is going to win at least a single game. Krasnodar and Zenit lost two players yesterday. Smolov knee injury didn't look serious, but knee injury usually is not a good thing. Djordjevic wasn't able even to stand... He is not a key player for Zenit, however hope he will recover soon. And Smolov too.
