Round 12
October 15: Teplice - České Budějovice 0:2
October 15: Hradec Králové - Brno 2:1
October 15: Bohemians - Olomouc 1:1
October 15: Sparta Praha - Pardubice 5:2
October 16: Ostrava - Slovácko 3:1
October 16: Zlín - Liberec 2:1
October 16: Jablonec - Plzeň 0:3
October 16: Slavia Praha - Mladá Boleslav 2:1

Highlights of this round:
- No problem for Plzeň in Jablonec which did not resist very much.
- Slavia had the most complicated way to three points. After scoring an early goal, emergency center back Oscar was sent off after the ref awarded Boleslav a soft penalty. Skalák equalized and Slavia had to play over 80 minutes one man down. Still, Lingr was able to score after goalkeeper Kolář made some good saves. In the second half, Boleslav was not dangerous and Slavia held on quite easily.
- Sparta scored five goals, though also conceded twice at home against the worst club in the league so far. So it is also not all sunshine at Letná. The Prague derby in Eden takes place this Sunday.
- Ostrava with a new coach Pavel Hapal (after Pavel Vrba was sacked last week) won against Slovácko.
- The gap between the top 3 and the rest of the league expectedly starts to grow, while there are just two points separating Olomouc at N6 and Teplice at N14.

Last wednesday, most of the third round matches of Czech cup took place with one major surprise, titleholders and league leaders Plzeň were eliminated by third tier Hlučín 3-2, Plzeň equalized in 90' to 2-2 and it looked like they will avoid being eliminated, only for the home team to score a winning goal in 90+4'.

Two weeks ago, Jablonec was also eliminated by second tier Vyškov 0-1 at home.

Two matches are still left to be played, so far there are only three clubs in the round of 16 not of the top tier, apart from Vyškov and Hlučín it is Karviná. The other top tier club already eliminated is Pardubice, which went out already in the previous round by third tier Velvary.

Round 13
October 22: Olomouc - Zlín 2:1
October 22: Pardubice - Brno 1:3
October 22: Liberec - Jablonec 2:0
October 22: Plzeň - Ostrava 3:1
October 23: České Budějovice - Hradec Králové 0:3
October 23: Slovácko - Teplice 2:1
October 23: Mladá Boleslav - Bohemians 4:3
October 23: Slavia Praha - Sparta Praha 4:0

Highlights of this round:
- In the largest match in the country, Slavia destroyed Sparta 4-0. Slavia wasn't that much dominant but was very effective and four shots on goal resulted in four goals, all in the first half, the decisive first one in 5' after a horrible blunder by Sparta's young center back Vitík. The main story of the match is Sparta not being able to create a single scoring opportunity throughout the whole match. Slavia was just sitting back for the whole second half, controlling the match and waiting for the final whistle. Sparta's manager Brian Priske is under pressure from the media but reportedly Sparta does not think about another change at this post.
- In another huge clash, Plzeň won rather easily against Ostrava, scoring two goals inside the first 20 minutes. Therefore Plzeň still leads the standings virtually by 7 points ahead of Slavia and whopping 12 points ahead of Sparta which now seems to be out of the title race. Plzeň hosts Sparta in two weeks in Round 15.
- The Ještěd derby took place as well this week and Liberec came on top, defeating Jablonec 2-0. There are rumours that Jablonec may fire their new coach Horejš, although most pundits think it would be a great mistake to do it.
- With Slovácko and Ostrava having troubles it is surprisingly Hradec Králové holding on to the top three. Fantastic job by the club, being able to compete even after selling their best player Vlkanova to Plzeň.
- Brno's Jakub Řezníček scored a hattrick against Pardubice and moved to the top of the top scorers list.

League table after Round 13:
1. Plzeň 12 10 2 0 26:8 32

Round 14
October 29: Hradec Králové - Pardubice 1:3
October 29: Jablonec - České Budějovice 3:0
October 29: Ostrava - Mladá Boleslav 3:1
October 29: Zlín - Plzeň 0:3
October 30: Brno - Liberec 3:0
October 30: Teplice - Olomouc 2:1
October 30: Bohemians - Slavia Praha 1:4
postponed: Sparta Praha - Slovácko

Highlights of this round:
- due to a heavy fog, the UECL match Slovácko - Cologne was postponed to Friday and therefore the league match of Slovácko was postponed and will be played on November 9, as will be the other postponed match Plzeň - Brno.
- Plzeň meanwhile has no problems in the league whatsoever, Zlín did not show any resistance and it is hard to see how Plzeň could drop points anytime soon.
- Controversies in the small Prague derby at Bohemians. It was 1-1 when the referee did not award Bohemians a penalty despite VAR calling him to review his decision and immediately after the ref gave Slavia a penalty, which VAR called him to review also and the ref stand by his original decision. Slavia scored and eventually won comfortably after scoring two more goals in the second half. The referee's committee accepted the first decision of not giving Bohemians the penalty but decided that the penalty for Slavia was a wrong call.
- Huge win for Pardubice in the local derby against Hradec (though played in Mladá Boleslav, as both Hradec and Pardubice are just building their new stadiums) but the gap between Pardubice and other clubs above is still quite large.
- České Budějovice fired their coach Weber after their loss in Jablonec. Budějovice are by multiple stats the worst team in the league and their higher points total is mostly by luck in several matches.
- Ostrava is playing much better under their new coach Hapal who replaced fired Pavel Vrba. On Sunday Ostrava travels to Prague to face Slavia while Plzeň hosts Sparta on Saturday, couple of biggest matches possible in the league.

League table after Round 14:
1. Plzeň 13 11 2 0 29:8 35

The Round of 16 of Czech Cup was drawn on Monday and here are the ties:

Ostrava - Sparta Praha
Bohemians - Hlučín
Karviná - Slavia Praha
Liberec - Olomouc
Slovácko - Mladá Boleslav
Teplice - Brno
Zlín - Vyškov
České Budějovice - Hradec Králové

The official date of the matches is November 19, which quite unbelievably collides with the NT friendly match in Turkey. I don't see neither Sparta nor Slavia playing their matches that day. Next possible dates are the following Wednesday and following Saturday, i.e. more than a week after the league's end and during the World Cup. Some matches might be posponed to spring, for example February, but probably not matches involving lower tier clubs (Karviná, Hlučín, Vyškov) which will restart their league seasons in March.

All in all, the incompetence of people running Czech Cup is astonishing.

Round 15
November 5: Bohemians - Zlín 3:2
November 5: Olomouc - Jablonec 3:0
November 5: České Budějovice - Brno 3:2
November 5: Plzeň - Sparta Praha 0:1
November 6: Mladá Boleslav - Teplice 3:0
November 6: Liberec - Hradec Králové 2:0
November 6: Slovácko - Pardubice 1:0
November 6: Slavia Praha - Ostrava 3:1

Highlights of this round:
- Plzeň surprisingly lost at home to Sparta, ending their 35-matches long unbeaten strike. It was quite an even match decided in the last 10 minutes with a goal by Pavelka following a corner kick. The match was somewhat overshadowed by a nasty attack of Chorý on Sørensen witch somehow did not yield a red card. VAR referee Pavel Franěk was immediately critisized by the referees committee for not intervening.
- Slavia took the advantage and got the three points against Baník Ostrava, youngster Matěj Jurásek was the hero scoring two goals after he came from the bench for the final 20 minutes. His first goal however followed a tackle by Olayinka which most fans and experts saw as a foul but the referee did not blow the whistle and VAR did not intervene.
- Nothing new happening in the middle of the table, most clubs there do not perform consistently, noone really seems to have a stable good form.
- Pardubice and Zlín are still at the bottom, Zlín even lead 2-0 at Bohemians only to lose 2-3.
- The postponed two matches will take place on Wednesday.

Round 16
November 12: Teplice - Liberec 2:1
November 12: Jablonec - Mladá Boleslav 1:2
November 12: Ostrava - Bohemians 4:1
November 12: Sparta Praha - České Budějovice 1:0
November 13: Hradec Králové - Slovácko 1:2
November 13: Pardubice - Plzeň 1:1
November 13: Brno - Olomouc 2:3
November 13: Zlín - Slavia Praha 0:4

Highlights of this round:
- Plzeň's lead shrinked surprisingly once more in the last round of the autumn part of this season as the titleholder only drew at Pardubice. The pundits now see the title race as more or less even between Plzeň and Slavia.
- Slavia won quite easily in Zlín, converting their first two chances and scoring third goal after half an hour. Zlín had a lot of big chances also, but did not convert any of them.
- Sparta ended their autumn run strongly, winning three matches in a row without conceding a single goal. The gap between Plzeň and Sparta is now at seven points.
- Olomouc also had a strong finish and jumped to fourth place, their striker Chytil will be demanded probably by all top czech clubs.
- Baník Ostrava and Slovácko also improved their position in the league standings and they will surely attack top6 in spring, Baník in particular looks very good since they fired Pavel Vrba.
- Pardubice closed up on Zlín which fired their coach Jelínek after this round, despite they have still a cup match to play on Thursday.

The second division of czech football, the FNL, also reached the end of its autumn part after 16 rounds of football. It will restart at the beginning of March. Here are the standings, you will notice that it is quite even and nothing is settled yet.

1. Příbram 16 8 7 1 29:12 31
2. Vyškov 16 8 5 3 29:17 29
3. Líšeň 16 8 4 4 23:11 28
4. Varnsdorf 16 8 3 5 25:18 27
5. Karviná 16 8 1 7 28:24 25
6. Chrudim 16 6 5 5 20:17 23
7. Prostějov 16 5 6 5 27:31 21
8. Jihlava 16 6 3 7 18:24 21
9. Táborsko 16 5 5 6 15:22 20
10. Olomouc B 16 5 5 6 18:27 20
11. Opava 16 5 4 7 14:14 19
12. Vlašim 16 5 3 8 27:27 18
13. Dukla Praha 16 5 3 8 21:25 18
14. Třinec 16 4 6 6 18:24 18
15. Sparta Praha B 16 5 2 9 15:24 17
16. Slavia Praha B 16 4 4 8 22:32 16

Promotion, Promotion playoff, Relegation

It is hard to say who is the favourite to be promoted at this point. Příbram is a traditional top flight club and surely would be able to compete there, Vyškov is quite ambitious but does not have a league stadium at this point. Líšeň is a club from Brno, so they could play at Brno stadium without the necessity to build their own stadium, but also they are a very small club and I do not think they would be willing to play the top league even if they qualify. Karviná is in shooting distance, they are also an obvious choice for a club capable of promotion.

Concerning B squads of league clubs, both Sparta and Slavia did not use much of their first squad players in autumn and played with very young players, Slavia in particular played essentially their U19 squad in the league. It seems likely that if these clubs get in danger of being relegated, they will use their first squad players more often to get some points and avoid relegation in the end.

The winter break is finally over and the league returns this weekend with Round 17. The draw of the quarterfinals of the czech MOL Cup took place with the following QF ties:

Slovácko - Bohemians
České Budějovice/Hradec Králové - Brno
Liberec - Sparta Praha
Slavia Praha - Vyškov (II)

Usual amount of transfers took place during the winter break with the following being most important:

Plzeň:
IN: Matěj Vydra (free agent), Roman Květ (Bohemians), Rafiu Durosinmi (Karviná)
OUT: Aleš Čermák (Bohemians)

No major departures and two top and one decent arrival. Plzeň surely wants to defend their title, they have the quality as well as depth in their squad, no wonder that they are considered to be in a dead heat with Slavia in the title race.

Slavia:
IN: Igoh Ogbu (Lilleström), Petr Hronek (Bohemians), David Pech (Mladá Boleslav), back from loan is Mick van Buren (Liberec)
OUT: Yira Sor (Genk), Moses Usor (LASK), Christ Tiehi (Wigan)

Slavia is also rumoured to get Christos Zafeiris from Haugesund in the next hours or days. The squad of Slavia is mostly healthy and with no european cups in the spring, Slavia should not face the same fatigue in the title race as last season.

Sparta:
IN: Kaan Kairinen (Lilleström), Qazim Laci (Ajaccio), Dimitrije Kamenovič (Lazio), Awer Mabil (Cádiz)
OUT: Jan Fortelný (Olomouc), Lukáš Juliš (Ibiza), Dominik Holec (Lech Poznań)

Sparta acquired four foreign players and lets several czech players go, making the squad more international. Interesting to see two players from the same foreign club (Lilleström) to arrive to czech league.

Other notable:
Lamin Jawo: Zlín -> Mladá Boleslav
Jan Král: Eupen -> Jablonec
Vasil Kušej: Prostějov -> Mladá Boleslav
Victor Olatunji: AEK Larnaca -> Liberec
Libor Kozák: Slovácko -> Zlín
Seung Bin Kim: Dukla Praha -> Slovácko

Round 17
January 28: Bohemians - Teplice 2:0
January 28: Plzeň - Hradec Králové 1:2
January 28: Slovácko - České Budějovice 1:0
January 28: Olomouc - Sparta Praha 1:1
January 29: Slavia Praha - Jablonec 5:1
January 29: Mladá Boleslav - Brno 0:0
January 29: Liberec - Pardubice 1:1
January 29: Zlín - Ostrava 1:1

Highlights of this round:
- Plzeň suffered a shocking defeat at home against Hradec Králové. Plzeň scored early and everything looked bright but then conceded from a breakaway in the first half and then via a deflected shot in the second half. Plzeň had their chances but did not convert any.
- Slavia on the other hand won decisively despite being just 1-1 after an hour of play. But then substitute Mick van Buren provided goal and an assist and another sub Matěj Jurásek scored a brace to make it 5-1. Moreover, ahead of the match, Slavia introduced their new signing, Christos Zafeiris from Haugesund.
- Sparta faced Olomouc away and similarly as Plzeň scored early but then conceded near the end of the first half. Sparta's Panák hit the post in the 11th minute of the added time so the match ended with a draw. What is worse, Sparta lost two injured players, center back Sorensen and striker Čvančara. Not a good start.
- At the end of the table, both Pardubice and Zlín got one point. Zlín is lead by Pavel Vrba who was sacked by Baník Ostrava earlier and Zlín faced Baník at home this round. Baník was a bit better and wasted some chances, unlucky to not win this match.
- The gap between teams at N4 and N11 remains very narrow, it will certainly be an interesting spring season in this direction.

Round 18
February 4: Jablonec - Zlín 2:2
February 4: Teplice - Ostrava 0:5
February 4: Slovácko - Olomouc 0:0
February 4: Pardubice - Slavia Praha 0:2
February 5: České Budějovice - Liberec 0:2
February 5: Brno - Plzeň 1:3
February 5: Hradec Králové - Bohemians 0:2
February 5: Sparta Praha - Mladá Boleslav 4:1

Highlights of this round:
- None of the three favourites had it easy this week. Slavia faced Pardubice on their new stadium with a capacity of 4620 spectators. It is funny that the newest stadium in the league is also the stadium with the lowest capacity. Nevertheless the atmosphere was good. Slavia was lucky to go ahead in the match via a penalty for a handball discovered by VAR. In the second half Slavia was very poor, much worse than Pardubice, was lucky not to concede and then in the final seconds of the added time scored a second goal.
- Plzeň was 1-0 down at halftime in Brno and lost their key midfielder Kalvach due to injury. However, Bucha equalized quite early in the second half and then Kopic hit a perfect shot to make it 1-2. Similarly as Slavia, Plzeň added their final goal late in the added time.
- Sparta was also 1-0 down, already after three minutes, but quickly equalized and then scored from the penalty spot. Still, their performance was far from optimal, Mladá Boleslav had their chances. In the final ten minutes, Sparta's Minchev scored twice.
- Bohemians move to N4 after an important and somewhat surprising away win against Hradec Králové, meanwhile Olomouc and Slovácko shared a point after a goalless draw.
- Liberec and Ostrava helped themselves with persuasive away wins
- Zlín was 2-0 up against Jablonec away but the home team was able to equalize so the three point gap between them stays the same.

Round 19
February 11: Ostrava - Jablonec 1:2
February 11: Zlín - Teplice 2:1
February 11: Liberec - Slovácko 0:1
February 11: Slavia Praha - Brno 2:0
February 12: Olomouc - Hradec Králové 2:2
February 12: Mladá Boleslav - Pardubice 0:1
February 12: Plzeň - České Budějovice 2:1
February 12: Bohemians - Sparta Praha 2:6

Highlights of this round:
- All three favourites won again. Slavia had a tough time against Brno, wasted some chances, scored a lucky free kick goal in the second half, their goalkeeper Kolář needed to make two miraculous saves and then van Buren scored late.
- Plzeň had troubles against České Budějovice who had 62 % possession and 17 shots in the match, those are not numbers one would expect in a home Plzeň match against a club fighting for survival in the league. Plzeň however lead 2-0, then conceded one goal but that was all.
- Eventful match in the small Prague derby between Bohemians and Sparta. Sparta lead 1-0 at halftime as Bohemians wasted a penalty. Still, Bohemians equalized early in the second half, but then Sparta scored five goals in 35 minutes. Therefore nothing changes at the top of the table, it is still Slavia one point ahead of Plzeň, Sparta being six points behind Plzeň.
- Slovácko rises to N4 with a win in Liberec due to an added time goal. No other mid-table club shined this week. Ostrava dropped all points against Jablonec. Tomáš Hübschmann of Jablonec could have become the oldest goalscorer in the league but his goal was eventually assessed to be an own goal by the league.
- At the bottom, crucial wins for Pardubice, Zlín and Jablonec. It is starting to be interesting in the fight for survival.

Round 20
February 18: Hradec Králové - Mladá Boleslav 0:1
February 18: Brno - Ostrava 2:1
February 18: Liberec - Olomouc 2:2
February 18: Teplice - Slavia Praha 1:1
February 19: Pardubice - Zlín 2:1
February 19: České Budějovice - Bohemians 1:0
February 19: Slovácko - Plzeň 2:0
February 19: Sparta Praha - Jablonec 3:0

Highlights of this round:
- This time it is Sparta who won the weekend. Sparta won rather easily against Jablonec, after a 1-0 half and not really that great performance they played their best football in the second half and Jablonec was lucky not to travel home with much more goals in their net. Lukáš Haraslín scored twice and some journalists call him now as a footballer with clearly the best form in the league.
- Slavia played shockingly poorly throughout most of the match in Teplice. Slavia conceded very early and for the rest of the first half did not produce a single good chance. Coach Trpišovský made two substitutions in the first half and another two at halftime, Slavia got a bit better but then wasted a penalty and only equalized from another penalty. Two further chances got wasted and last 20 minutes there was essentially no chances for Slavia at all.
- Despite only drawing in Teplice, Slavia still doubled their lead, because Plzeň lost at Slovácko. And deservedly so, Slovácko was better and clearly is now a strong favourite to finish fourth. Plzeň on the other hand has troubles as their star midfielder Kalvach is injured.
- Ostrava continues to stumble, this time they lost in Brno. Time shortens for them to get to top 6. If they do not manage to squeeze in, it would be a great disappointment.
- Meanwhile Olomouc looks quite good and Liberec not bad either. They played an interesting match where each of them lead for a while and also played much better than the other one for significant amount of time.
- At the bottom, Pardubice won a crucial match and definitely are back in the survival game. With their new home ground advantage, they are now favourites to survive against the competition of Zlín, Teplice and České Budějovice, who however also won this weekend.
