The 2023/24 league season started last September, and Al Ahly still have as many as 7 matches to play in the coming month (3 “dead rubber” league games, and potentially 4 cup games). And then in mid-September, they will have to start their African campaign with the CAF Super Cup in Saudi Arabia, and the two-legged round of 32 matches in their title defense of CAF Champions League.

OFFICIAL: Al Ahly withdraw from 2023/24 Egypt Cup

African champions Al Ahly have officially withdrawn from the 2023/24 Egypt Cup citing exhaustion and disagreement over the schedule.

The Egyptian Football Association Competitions Committee announced the remaining stages of the 2023/24 Egypt Cup will take place following the conclusion of the Premier League.

This led to the objection of several clubs, led by Al Ahly, due to the lack of rest, given that the team hasn’t had a long break due to the clashing of the previous seasons and the club’s participation in several trophies.

This season, the Reds would play 61 games across eight different trophies, leading also to the club’s withdrawal from the Egyptian League Cup.

In Egypt, Pyramids FC won the 2023/24 Egyptian Cup, beating ZED 1-0 in the final.

This is their first major title won since their "re-formation" in 2018, with the team name changed from "Al Assiouty Sport" and the club moved to Cairo. Since then, they have finished as runners-up in the league three times (2021/22, 2022/23, 2023/24), in the cup twice (2018/19, 2021/22), in the Super Cup once (2022/23), and in the CAF Confederation Cup once (2019/20).

On Sunday, Chilean club Huachipato played two matches on the same day, one in the league and one in the cup, as both matches had been postponed from their earlier schedule which caused fixture congestion.

At 12:00, they played their home league match against O'Higgins, and won 1-0 to leave the relegation zone.

At 14:30, they played their home second leg cup match against lower-division Imperial Unido, and drew 0-0 to win the two-legged tie 2-1 on aggregate.

They used a mostly different set of players in each match, but a few players who came off the bench in the first match started the second match.
