2026 World Cup - South American qualifiers
Bolivia apparently means business.
Peru OTOH is still winless and still stuck with the lowest point tally in the current format (Venezuela with 3). Not that I think they won't score more points at all, but looking as hopeless as they do at this juncture with such a friendly allocation is deplorable.
Brazil BTW would have to be worried if the old allocation was in place.

Standings after matchday 8
exciting round with defeats for Brazil and Argentina
Chile also loses, 1 win in 8 games for them.

Even at this stage its easy to name 5 out of 6 teams which will qualify directly, Argentina, Colombia, Uruguay, Ecuador and Brazil are much better than others. The question is about one other direct spot and play-off spot. I like Paraguay chances, they've improved massively after appointing Gustavo Alfaro. And in Diego Gómez and Julio Enciso they at last have exciting creative players, what a goal Gómez scored against Brazil! As for 7th play-off spot really have no idea, may be even Bolivia with their huge altitude advantage in home matches.
I agree with your first 4 picks but Brazil, well who knows! It’s nearly the half way stage and they’ve lost half their matches. It’s gonna be a pretty tight finish, Brazil need to get their act together. I have a sentimental hope that Venezuela can debut, but they need to get back on track. Bolivia and Paraguay could be some party spoilers.anty1975 wrote: ↑Wed Sep 11, 2024 12:12 Even at this stage its easy to name 5 out of 6 teams which will qualify directly, Argentina, Colombia, Uruguay, Ecuador and Brazil are much better than others. I still have Brazil as almost assured to qualify. There is just way way way too much room for error given the current format.
Brazil might be starting to worry a bit if it was the old 4+1 qualifying system, but with 6+1 qualifying I suppose they will still manage to do enough.
Brazil's next two games are Chile and Peru, so they will probably move up the table.

This Brazil qualifying campaign reminds me of the 2002 WCQ when Brazil didn’t secure qualification until the last round (IIRC, they were the 30th team to qualify) let’s hope this WC will end the same way.

Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez will miss Argentina's next two games after being banned by Fifa for "offensive behaviour".
The suspension relates to two incidents in 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Chile and Colombia this month.
Martinez repeated his infamous celebrations after the 2022 World Cup triumph by holding a replica Copa America trophy against his crotch following the 3-0 win over Chile on 6 September.
The match was Argentina's first since winning the Copa America in the United States in July.
On 10 September Martinez hit a camera with his gloves as a cameraman approached him on the pitch after the 2-1 defeat by Colombia.
The Argentina Football Association said it disagreed with the suspension but that Martinez was "responsible" for his actions.
He will miss the qualifiers against Venezuela and Bolivia in October.
Martinez won the Golden Glove award for best keeper at the 2022 World Cup and placed the trophy near his groin after the presentation.

Matchday 9 fixtures, 10-11 October 2024
Bolivia, despite being down to 10 men in the first half, scored in the second half to beat Colombia 1-0. Their third win in a row, including two at the even higher-attitude El Alto stadium, put them in 4th place, at least temporarily.
