Czech Football Season 2024/25
Czech Football Season 2024/25
New season of czech football is approaching with plenty of important changes.
First of all, the two top leagues have new names as the betting site Chance (member of the Tipsport family) won the tender for naming rights. Therefore, instead of Fortuna liga (Fortuna league), we now have Chance liga (Chance league) with the second tier being named Chance national league. The league association for the first time in history held open tenders for naming rights, betting rights and TV rights all of which resulted in approx. 3.5-times higher revenue than previously, when some of these rights were sold directly to a mediator which then sold these rights. This was criticized heavily lately and the league association was forced to go through open tenders and the result is approx. 30 milion Euro in all these rights combined for top two czech leagues. The rebranding of the league was done yesterday evening and the new website with updated graphic design is here: https://www.chanceliga.cz/ - there doesn't seem to be an english version (yet?)
The clubs are obviously in the middle of their preseason programs.
Sparta Praha as the champion lost their key person, head coach Brian Priske, who left for Feyenoord. His former assistent Lars Friis took over, so Sparta remains in Danish hands. Sparta's captain and another influential figure, center back Ladislav Krejčí, was transfered to Girona. The only arrival to the club up to now is Ermal Krasniqi from Rapid Bucuresti. More movement both ways is still expected, there might be some interest abroad in Sparta's offensive players Kuchta, Haraslín and Birmančević as well as in young center back Vitík. Regardless of any transfers still to be made, Sparta's goals are clear - qualify to the Champions League this summer and win the title for the third time to qualify to the CL also next season.
Slavia Praha aims to win the title after three seasons of second places. They did not sell any player and probably won't in the rest of the transfer window. Concerning arrivals, they will most likely acquire striker Tomáš Chorý from Plzeň in a record breaking deal between two czech clubs. This is a spicy transfer, Chorý is widely unpopular among Slavia fans and it will probably take some time before the majority of fans accept him. The transfer fee should be around 4M Euro which is unheard of in deals between czech clubs. Apart from Chorý, Slavia aims to acquire other offensive weapons and will use some players returning from loans. Their goalkeeper Staněk was injured in the last NT match at Euro and will miss the whole autumn part of the season which could mean that 21 years old prodigy Antonín Kinský will start. Also Slavia wants to qualify to the Champions League, either this summer or the next one via winning the title.
Plzeň made the most moves of the top three clubs in the offseason up to now. They acquired midfielder Tom Slončík from Zlín, winger Christophe Kabongo from Lommel and defender Cory Séne from Lafnitz. Is is almost certain that Chorý will be replaced in Plzeň by striker Ricardinho from Levski Sofia. Their head coach Miroslav Koubek continues even though there were some rumours that Plzeň may replace him by Martin Svědík who left Slovácko after the season.
The league will start on Friday, July 19 with Sparta hosting Pardubice.

The league format stays very similar as previous seasons, i.e. 30 rounds of the main season followed by the play-off, top 6 teams play one match against each other in a given format, teams 7-10 play a bracket and teams 11-16 play one match against each other similarly as the top 6 teams. The important difference however is that there is no ECL qualification match between N4 and the winner of the bracket N7-N10. N4 qualifies to ECL Q2 instead and the winner of the middle group gets just financial bonus and a later entry into the czech cup next season.

The league starts tomorrow with Sparta hosting Pardubice. Sparta added defenders Imanol Garcia from Athletic Bilbao and Mathias Ross from Galatasaray. There are some interesting departures of young players on loans to second Bundesliga - Adam Karabec to Hamburger SV and Michal Ševčík to Nuremberg. Slavia indeed acquired Tomáš Chorý and the return of their former star Peter Olayinka from Red Star is almost finished.
The stakes are very high, the champion qualifies directly for the Champions League. With new TV deal, there is new central VAR room with calibrated offside line, so there should be (in theory) less referee controversy but we will see, how everything turns out...

August 18: České Budějovice - Plzeň 0:3 (Att: 4 528)
August 18: Slovácko - Ostrava 1:0 (Att: 6 447)
Highlights of these rounds:
- Sparta continues to dominate the league, recorded another win. Moreover, the club signed striker Albion Rrahmani from Rapid Bucuresti for reportedly record breaking 5M Euro fee.
- Slavia almost dropped points in their home match against Teplice. They conceded first and turned around the match only in the final 10 minutes. The club obviously focuses on the Champions league playoff ties against Lille.
- Plzeň had some problems early in the match but ended winning 3-0 in České Budějovice and keeps N2 in the standings. Plzeň postponed their next round league match against Olomouc in order to focus on the Europa league playoff matches against Hearts.
- Olomouc won an attractive match against Mladá Boleslav with their striker Jan Kliment scoring a brace including the game winning goal in the added time from a corner kick. Mladá Boleslav also postponed their match against Slavia Praha in order to focus on the Conference league playoffs against Paks.
- Hradec Králové is among clubs which impress early in the season, scoring another three points against Dukla. They added center back Tomáš Petrášek and may eye european cups spots if everything goes right for them this season.
- However the competition for two spots behind Sparta, Plzeň and Slavia will be fierce, Liberec, Mladá Boleslav, Ostrava and maybe even Jablonec and Olomouc would all like to participate as well.

August 24: Bohemians - Jablonec 1:2 (Att: 4 228)

August 25: Ostrava - Liberec 2:0 (Att: 7 737)
August 25: Dukla Praha - České Budějovice 3:0 (Att: 2 472)
postponed: Mladá Boleslav - Slavia Praha
postponed: Plzeň - Olomouc
Highlights of these rounds:
- Mladá Boleslav and Plzeň decided to postpone their league matches between both legs of european playoff qualification matches, which is allowed without consent of the opposing team in these circumstances.
- Sparta was the only team playing european cups which played their league match this week and in retrospect it was a poor decision for them not to postpone their match. They started almost exclusively rotation players, were 1-2 down at halftime and after substituing in several key players were only able to equalize. Therefore all three top clubs have one draw in their league record at this point, of course Plzeň and Slavia have one postponed match and therefore three points less than Sparta
- Mladá Boleslav shockingly fired their coach this weekend and signed Andreas Brännström from Sweden as their new coach.
- Center back Robin Hranáč left Plzeň for a record fee around 10 million Euro to Hoffenheim, also an unusual move in between two legs of european qualification matches.
- Ostrava defeated Liberec in an attractive match, once again Ewerton was a key player providing goal and an assist.
- Dukla against České Budějovice on the other hand was laughingly poor match between two worst clubs in the league. České Budějovice sold several important players during last couple of weeks and their chances to survive this season in the top tier of czech football look very slim at this moment

Highlights of this round:
- What a round, nine red cards in eight matches, two of the top three teams dropped points at home...

- Plzeň does not look very good lately in the league. They were better than Mladá Boleslav which played almost the whole second half one man down, but they failed to convert chances and in the end failed to win for the third consecutive time in the league.
- Not much happening elsewhere, Pardubice are in trouble after their home loss against Teplice.
