Mon, 09 September, 2024
Kuala Lumpur: The Continent’s finest 24 clubs will take centre stage next week when the inaugural 2024/25 season of the AFC Champions League Elite™ (ACL Elite) kicks off on Monday, September 16.
Asian football fans can look forward to 12 tantalising ties in the first of eight matchdays in the League Stage – a format being implemented for the first time in an AFC club competition.
Featuring two leagues of 12 teams across the West and East regions, each side will face eight different opponents within its region in the form of four home and four away matches between September 16, 2024 and February 19, 2025.
Saudi Arabian giants Al Hilal SFC and Uzbekistan heavyweights Pakhtakor will make their joint-record 19th appearance in Asia’s elite men’s club competition – inclusive of the preceding AFC Champions League™ (ACL) - while Gwangju FC of Korea Republic is the sole club making their Continental debut.
West
The riveting battles begin on Monday at the Hazza Bin Zayed Stadium in Al Ain, where the home side take on Al Sadd SC at 8pm. The only United Arab Emirates club to have won the ACL (2003 and 2023/24), Al Ain FC are seeking back-to-back crowns on their 17th appearance. The Qatari visitors, also marking their 17th participation, are similarly the only side from their country to have claimed the ACL (2011). Al Sadd won a 17th league title and 19th domestic cup in 2023/24 – both records – and are unbeaten against Al Ain in their two meetings to date, drawing 3-3 away and winning 4-0 at home in the 2020 ACL Group Stage.
Al Shorta, who won their third Iraqi league title on the trot in 2023/24 and added a first cup win to complete a domestic double, return to the competition for a fifth time and first since 2021. They host Al Nassr Club at 7pm at the Karbala International Stadium, with the nine-time Saudi league champions and two-time ACL semi-finalists making their eighth appearance. Both teams met for the first time at the 2023 Arab Club Champions Cup last August, with Al Nassr winning 1-0 in the semi-finals enroute to winning their first title.
Seven-time Qatari league winners Al Gharafa SC came through the Preliminary Stage to take their place here and the 2010 quarter-finalists will travel to the Islamic Republic of Iran to begin their 10th tournament involvement. Esteghlal FC await them as the nine-time league champions appear for a 13th time and first since 2021. The hosts, who won once and drew the other in their two previous encounters in the 2010 ACL Group Stage, will eye a second win when proceedings kick off at 9.30pm.
Finalists in 2012, Al Ahli Saudi FC last qualified in 2021 and the three-time Saudi league winners are back for a 13th time to meet Persepolis FC for a fifth occasion. The away side, who won a record 16th league title in 2023/24 and have themselves reached the final twice (2018 and 2020), are appearing for a 12th time and hold the upper hand in their head-to-head record with two wins and one draw; kick-off is at 9pm in Jeddah’s King Abdullah Sports City.
On September 17, Bunyodkor Stadium will stage the first ever meeting between Pakhtakor and Al Wasl FC at 7pm. The hosts, winners of a fifth consecutive and record 16th overall Uzbekistan league crown in 2023, have twice reached the last four and have qualified for a sixth straight time. Triumph in the UAE league in 2023/24 ended a drought from 2007 and brought about Al Wasl’s eighth title, which secured a fourth appearance in this tournament and first since 2019.
Also at 7pm on the same evening, record five-time finalists Al Hilal SFC will make the trip to face Al Rayyan SC for their opening match at the Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium. Having ended the 2023/24 Saudi Arabian season with a domestic double, Al Hilal are hunting a third trophy to add to their 2019 and 2021 triumphs. The Qatari hosts, eight-time league winners, are involved for a 12th time; while they have lost five of their previous eight meetings, Al Rayyan will draw inspiration from their most recent encounter, a 2-0 win in the 2022 ACL Group Stage.
East
Gwangju’s maiden foray into elite Continental competition starts with a baptism of fire at home to Yokohama F. Marinos, who come calling at the Gwangju World Cup Stadium on September 17 at 7pm. The hosts, whose third-place finish in 2023 was their best ever K League 1 placing, face a Marinos side that have won the J1 League five times and are aiming to make it to a second straight Final in their seventh appearance.
Making their 12th appearance, the most of any club from China PR, three-time quarter-finalists Shandong Taishan FC are targeting a breakthrough after navigating the Preliminary Stage to get here. Their opposition at the Jinan Olympic Center at 6pm are the Central Coast Mariners, whose excellent 2023/24 campaign saw them add the AFC Cup™ trophy to their A-League Premiers and Champions wins. It is a fifth appearance for the Australians, who last participated in 2014.
Having won their fourth Thai league title in a row and 10th in total, both records, Buriram United are looking to emulate their run to the last eight from 2013. The first match of their ninth involvement sees them face J1 League outfit Vissel Kobe, who won their first ever league title in 2023. The 2020 semi-finalists are making their third appearance and will kick things off at 7pm at the Buriram Stadium.
Two domestic FA Cup winners clash at the Shanghai Stadium at 8pm when China PR’s Shanghai Shenhua FC, who won their sixth cup, entertain Korea Republic’s FC Pohang Steelers, whose cup win was their fifth. Quarter-finalists in 2006, Shenhua are making an eighth appearance and first since 2020 while the K League 1 visitors have nine previous showings under their belt, along with a 2009 triumph and 2021 runners-up finish.
The first of two ties on September 18, to be played at the Ulsan Munsu Football Stadium at 7pm, features 2023 K League 1 champions Ulsan HD FC and Japanese outfit Kawasaki Frontale, who won their domestic cup last season. The home side are making their 12th appearance and eighth in a row – the longest current streak in the competition – and are targeting a third triumph after their victories in 2012 and 2020. Frontale have thrice reached the last eight and will aim to go further on their 11th involvement – a record for a Japanese side. It will be the fourth season in a row that these two teams have met, with five wins for Ulsan and two for Frontale in their 12 encounters to date.
The city’s third representative in this season’s tournament, Shanghai Port FC round out the opening round of matches at 8pm with a showdown against Johor Darul Ta’zim FC at the Pudong Football Stadium. The Chinese Super League side won their second title in 2023 to seal a return to the competition since their fifth appearance in 2020, with a last-four finish in 2017 their deepest ever run. Their opponents, who have won a remarkable 10 consecutive Malaysian Super League titles, are the only Malaysian side to ever participate in the ACL – this will be their fifth involvement.
Following the completion of the League Stage, the top eight finishers of each region progress to the Round of 16, scheduled for March 2025. This will be followed by a unique centralised Finals that see all matches from the Quarter-finals onwards being contested in Saudi Arabia between April 25 and May 4, 2025.
All times indicated are in local time.
