They won the domestic league in 2024. I suppose that was the criteria to qualify or?

No they didn't. They were first in regular season. The MLS is decided in knockout playoffs, kind of Champions League now

I am not following their football and I do not know who counts as the champion. So you are saying it was not declared in advance that the reagular season winner will take the place? Then who was intended to take that place? Cup winner?

The champion is who win the playoffs final. Winner of regular season is the winner of regular season. You can find it innone of the 2 articles I shared above.

And it wasn't set the rules for the host. FIFA didn't set "it will be the winner, or it will be the regular season".
If they had set up beforehand that the spot was for the regular season winner you could say "I don't agree but its clear for all, all teams know what to do to qualify"

FIFA has unveiled the official FIFA Club World Cup Trophy that will be lifted for the first time at next year’s tournament, set to be staged at 12 world-class venues across 11 Host Cities in the United States from Sunday, 15 June to Sunday, 13 July 2025.

The new trophy, designed by FIFA and crafted in collaboration with global luxury jeweller Tiffany & Co., will be presented to the inaugural FIFA Club World Cup™ winners, who will be crowned after the final at the MetLife Stadium in New York New Jersey.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino said: “Innovative, inclusive, groundbreaking and truly global, the new 32-team FIFA Club World Cup deserves a trophy that represents all of this. It is both prestigious and timeless – a golden trophy that is a symbol of the future and inspired by the past.”

A symbol of the future, inspired by the past

Boasting a 24-carat gold-plated finish, the FIFA Club World Cup Trophyfeatures intricate laser-engraved inscriptions on both sides, showcasing text and imagery that portray football’s rich history. The inscriptions include a world map and the names of all 211 FIFA Member Associations and the six confederations, representing the geographical and cultural diversity of the beautiful game.

The trophy’s central disc displays an array of icons that capture football’s traditions, including symbols of stadiums and equipment and a world map.

The trophy also features engravings in 13 languages and Braille, further highlighting the inclusive spirit of the global game and ensuring that the tournament’s legacy is accessible to diverse audiences around the world. Space is available to laser-engrave the emblems of the winning clubs for 24 editions of the tournament. Furthermore, the trophy can transform from a shield into a multifaceted and orbital structure – an adaptable design that establishes a powerful visual structure.

The famous Voyager Golden Records carried on NASA’s Voyager deep-space missions in the 1970s, the periodic table, maps of pioneering journeys and astronomy each played a role in the trophy’s conceptualisation. Celebrating both the past and the future of the sport, the trophy features celestial symbols representing the approximate positions of planets at the time of FIFA’s foundation on Saturday, 21 May 1904 in Paris, France, and of the tournament’s opening match on 15 June 2025 in Miami, USA.

An inspiring message to the champions is engraved on the trophy, including the following: “To those who hold this trophy, history belongs to you! You are witness to a moment in time that represents the pinnacle of club football, bestowed upon few but celebrated by many.” These words reflect the trophy’s status as a symbol of greatness, honouring the legends of the past while inspiring clubs globally.

A trophy for champions

The champions at each edition will receive a replica of the FIFA Club World Cup Trophy featuring engravings that mark their triumph after the final. Luiz Henrique, Alex Telles and Junior Santos guided 10-man Botafogo to an astonishing CONMEBOL Copa Libertadores 2024 victory following a dramatic and action-packed 3-1 triumph over Atletico Mineiro at Estadio Monumental in Argentina.

Victory in the South American showpiece in Buenos Aires means that Artur Jorge's side have become the 32nd and final team to qualify for the FIFA Club World Cup 2025™, which takes place in the United States from 15 June to 13 July.

The new FIFA Club World Cup, which brings together the leading teams from all six global confederations, will have four representatives from Brazil and two from Argentina, with the Rio-based outfit joining Palmeiras, Flamengo and Fluminense as Copa Libertadores winners, while River Plate and Boca Juniors qualified via the confederation rankings.

Those clubs will discover who they face in the group phase of the 63-game tournament when the draw takes place in Miami on Thursday, 5 December from 1900 CET.

Botafogo are now also assured of a place at the FIFA Intercontinental Cup 2024™, where they will meet Pachuca in the FIFA Derby of the Americas at Stadium 974 in Qatar on 11 December. The winners of that match will face Al Ahly in the FIFA Challenger Cup, with Real Madrid then awaiting the victors.

The 2024 Libertadores final exploded into life in the very first minute as Botafogo’s Gregore caught Fausto Vera in the head with a high boot, with referee Facundo Tello brandishing an immediate red card and the Galo man only able to continue after several minutes of treatment.

Inevitably, Botafogo were initially pushed onto the back foot but defended resolutely, with goalkeeper John largely untroubled aside from a couple of long-range efforts from veteran forward Hulk which stung his palms.

And the 10 men then stunned Atletico Mineiro by taking the lead in the 35th minute as Luiz Henrique seized on a loose ball following a shot from the edge of the area by Marlon Freitas to drill a left-foot strike under Everson at his near post from the corner of the six-yard box.

That unexpected advantage was doubled soon after with Everson flattening Luiz Henrique as he chased the ball into the area, with a penalty awarded following a VAR review. Alex Telles stepped up and smashed home into the bottom corner, sending the keeper the wrong way.

Gabriel Milito made three changes at the interval, and one of his new faces made an immediate impact as Eduardo Vargas was inexplicably left unmarked near the penalty spot to head home Hulk’s corner from the left in the 47th minute.

Galo continued to press but could not find a way through Botafogo’s defensive ranks again, with O Glorioso sealing their first-ever Libertadores crown deep into added time through Junior Santos, earning the right to test themselves against the world’s leading teams at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025.

Europe - 12 UEFA teams. Four via champions pathway (UEFA Champions League) and eight via ranking pathway.
North and Central America, Caribbean - 4 Concacaf teams. All via champions pathway (Concacaf Champions Cup).
Oceania - 1 OFC team. Via ranking pathway.

A not very correct geographical map of the participating clubs posted by FIFA. Didn't know that RB Salzburg is in Germany (maybe they are confusing them with another RB team?), Inter is located in the Balkans, and Borussia Dortmund is right in the middle of the Baltic Sea....

The teams in each conference are ranked according to the criteria which are used to qualify teams to the tournament. So Pot 1 contains the top 4 UEFA teams and the top 4 CONMEBOL teams, Pot 2 contains the remaining 8 UEFA teams. Pot 3 contains the top 2 AFC teams, top 2 CAF teams, top 2 CONCACAF teams, and the remaining 2 CONMEBOL teams. Pot 4 contains the remaining teams.
