Ligue 1 - MD18

Game of the week

LYON - TOULOUSE 0-0

XG: 0.62 - 1.37

OL held by Toulouse at home
Under the whistles of the few supporters still present in the stands, the Lyonnais share the points after a disappointing performance, far from the expected rebound. Téfécé can even have regrets for not having managed better some interesting situations in the second half. OL remains 6th.

Florent Malouda, former international player and former player of Lyon or Chelsea with whom he won the Champions League enlisted in the Foreign Legion in Guyana (the 3rd REI located there said to be one of the most difficult)
Following more than two decades at the pinnacle of football, Florent Malouda, the former French international and star of esteemed clubs including Olympique Lyonnais and , has made a surprising decision: he is enlisting in the army. At 44 years old, the ex-striker of the French national team announced that he will join the citizen reserve of the 3rd Foreign Infantry Regiment (REI) in Guyana, where he will serve as a combat officer.

Malouda, who earned 80 caps and scored 9 goals for the French national team, decided to turn the page on football after retiring in 2018. His new chapter, away from the football pitch, is now leading him towards a mission of instilling military values among the youth of Guyana.

"The 3rd Foreign Infantry Regiment welcomes Mr. Florent Malouda to its citizen reserve as an officer. After an exceptional career in international football, he is eager to share and pass on the values of commitment alongside the legionnaires of the 3rd REI," stated the French army in an announcement on social media.

This citizen reserve program allows public figures like Malouda, who are not militarily trained, to volunteer in support of the institution and promote its values. Based in Kourou, in northern Guyana, this regiment will be the new place of service for the 1998 champion.

This commitment marks a return to Malouda's roots, as he hails from Cayenne, the capital of Guyana, where he had previously represented the region in various international competitions towards the end of his playing career. Through this initiative, Malouda aims to actively contribute to the empowerment and development of the youth in his home region, engaging in missions that emphasize commitment and discipline.

Coupe de France - Round of 16

Another surprising elimination this time for Lille defeated by Dunkerque on penalties whereas they were leading the series 3-0 but miss their penalties after that.
And the carnage continues with the Wednesday games with the eliminations of Nice, Toulouse (both by lower-level clubs) and Strasbourg

LE MANS (N) - PARIS SG 0-2
Doué 25' Barcola 71'

LILLE - DUNKERQUE (L2) 1-1 (pso 4-5)
A.Gomes 85'; Tejan 90+6'

SAINT-BRIEUC (N2) - NICE 2-1
Boudin 88' 90+7'; Louchet 54'

TROYES (L2) - BREST 1-2
Magnetti o.g. 55'; Salah 49' Sima 90+2'

STRASBOURG - ANGERS 1-3
Lemaréchal 13'; Lepaul 2' 15' El Melali 76'

TOULOUSE - GUINGAMP (L2) 0-2
Sidibé 52' Ahile 89'

BOURGOIN-JAILLEU (N3) - REIMS 0-0 (pso 2-3)

CANNES (N2) - DIVES (N3) 5-3

N/N2/N3 = 3rd/4th/5th level

Coupe de France is the craziest domestic cup of the world by far. Zero logic in it.

It's quite a shame that PSG survived after penalties against Lens a couple of rounds ago. Now Brest on paper is the most dangerous team left for them in the competition. 50%* of the remaining teams do not play in Ligue 1.

* If Reims advance tomorrow

yes, namely this season.
That said, verything is made to have upsets (1-leg games, no extra-time). Not that much this round but in the 1/16th finals (R32) a lot of games ended on penalties and a lot of L1 teams were eliminated because of that.

I really hope that PSG win the Cup this year (or alternatively Brest maybe) otherwise our 2nd spot in Europa League will be very weird.

Even in single leg at home, a 4th division team beating an upper half 1st division in utterly insane in almost every country. In Greece the Youth Teams of the Top 4 teams can probably beat amateur 4th division teams by more than 3 goals. The subs of the men's teams would score 10. I am not exaggerating.

That'd be an interesting question for my country, lower league and even non-league teams have taken out top league teams, but top half of the top league teams by 4th tier or worse? Bradford City's famous away win at Chelsea came to mind but they were in the third tier at the time.

Germany rigs it so lower teams play at home, might they be the most likely to produce it?

In England it happens some times, but a) it is the kind of match where the 4th division team has 15% possession and wins 2-1 with 2-31 shots and b) it happens way more rarely than in France. In France there's almost every single year multiple teams of lower divisions knocking our top division teams (and top half) and without their matches being super lopsided in the statistics.

Can't be worse than OGC Nice 2024-2025 EL campaign though. That was a shameful one.

definitely. Shameful that's the word. Not able to win a single game.

Nice and Lens have hurt a lot the French coefficient this season
