Great performance by Arsenal last night to overturn a 2 goal deficit and progress to the semi-final. Only the 2nd team to overturn a 2 goal deficit in a quarter final 2nd leg, the other team being Arsenal again back in 2004. Perhaps it could happen again tonight though? I wouldn't rule it out if Chelsea can get their act together better than in the first leg.

Perhaps Real Madrid struggled to cope with the playing conditions:- dry and mild, a smooth grass pitch and a crowd :grin1: They did seem rather negative from the outset, refusing a possible break on 2 or three occasions in the first half to pass back and retain possession. Arsenal couldn't get the final ball right in the first half but that changed rather quickly in the second half and in the end could have scored more than 3, with a couple of close call offsides and one or two near misses preventing the score from being higher. Real Madrid threatened briefly in injury time, too little too late for them forcing one good save and a couple of corners to defend in injury time.

Arsenal will doubtless start as underdog for the semi-final but with a performance like that in the first leg against a much better opponent perhaps there is just a glimmer of a chance, I wouldn't have thought this earlier in the season before the change of manager.

Interesting fact - in the 4 season of group stage of Women Champions League 16/16 group winner and not single runner up advance to semi final.

Chelsea are by a distance the strongest English team, and showed it in the four game series with Manchester City. City's sole win, from the first leg, proved fruitless as Chelsea overcame the deficit with a 3-0 win. Over the four games Chelsea's strength in depth showed. This season City have had a thin squad at the best of times, so going toe to toe with Chelsea while missing Shaw, Hemp and Greenwood among others was always going to be a tough ask. With a big gap to third in the league, City will almost certainly miss out on Champions League football next year. The injuries have played a part in that, but Taylor was kept on as manager for too long.

Unfortunately I have to agree with you, Arsenal are the outsiders to win the tournament now. Surprisingly to me, because of I just checked the odds, Barcelona are really a quite overwhelming favourite to defeat Chelsea. It doesn't surprise me at all that they are the favourite in this encounter but you often find that bookmakers will overrate the chances of the English club and I don't think that they have done so here. Certainly though their massive win over Wolfsburg was hugely impressive.

I just watched the highlights. Looked like a very dominant performance and well worth the 3-0 win. But here's something I wasn't expecting since you didn't talk about players. Kelly and Russo. Absolute BEASTS! :o

Now you guys might have seen me rave about Kelly's crossing ability before, but this was the best I've ever seen. Two pinpoint crosses for the first two goals. And then there was another where Russo scored but was marginally offside, and again, it was another on a plate crossed delivery by Kelly. If you want to see what this girl can do crossing the ball, I don't know of any better match to showcase it than this one. In fact, I'm gonna clip it up so you can easily see:

https://youtu.be/EU3s2SoV8KQ?t=118

https://youtu.be/EU3s2SoV8KQ?t=156

https://youtu.be/EU3s2SoV8KQ?t=258

Look at the accuracy, the weight of the ball, the bend she puts on it. And she's doing it all at the highest level of the women's game in a match where her team is 2-0 down on aggregate. How many male players would even be better than her? If you did a drill where you had male attackers and defenders practicing with crosses and Kelly was delivering the crosses, how many male players would actually be better at it than her? Maybe the differences in height and speed of male players might throw her off in some way I don't know, but all I know is she's absolute class at it, consistently. Absolutely awesome, I love watching her deliver crosses, it's a work of art.

Now back to Russo. She had the ball in the net 4 times in this match, 2 goals and 2 offsides, and every one was different. Great finishing, great range of goalscoring techniques. She was trying so hard to finish off Real Madrid as both offsides came after 3-0. Absolutely wonderful to see that when we're going straight into the women's international window now with the games against Belgium.

Well my comment in this thread aged like milk. Kelly was injured before the first England game, and Russo was injured during it. Good luck Arsenal, you'll need it. I saw a comment elsewhere saying Arsenal have lost 5 players in this international break. :fingal:

Kelly and Russo are both available to start later. Van Domselaar will be missing.

It didn't occur to me that they'd be playing Champions League on a weekend. Only noticed and tuned in three minutes ago, just in time to see the Lyon keeper punch player not ball, Arsenal put away the penalty into the bottom corner, 1-1!
