Most will predict Porto to get #1 and APOEL to get #4 in this group.
Regarding APOEL's chances, I will quote Shakhtar coach:
Regarding APOEL's chances, I will quote Shakhtar coach:
As for Porto, I think winning at home against major competitors will be essential to get #1. Playing draw or losing at home can trow any team back in the race. Porto plays Shakhtar at home on 1-st tier, so should they fail to win, they will be already a small step back in the race. However, we may have some problems with APOEL as well. No one should underestimate this club and treat them as clear underdogs. The club that loses points against APOEL will most probably miss out on going through.

Porto has started their group stage campaigns with 0-0 draws at home against CSKA twice, only to win in Moscow both times and qualify. We've also lost at home recently against Dynamo Kiev and then went to win in Ukraine and ended up winning the group. Even if Porto lose points at home, they have what it takes to win them back away, there are no unwinnable games for Porto.Ivan22 wrote:Most will predict Porto to get #1 and APOEL to get #4 in this group.

I feel APOEL might surprise with 3rd place, but I have no idea who they'd finish above!
Group G
FC Porto
Well I'm almost slightly nervous when I talk about a team that has fans on here. I usually say something that annoys them. Anyway Porto are a strong team right now. To me they are an up and down team [like many teams I suppose]. They have the great seasons, then the dissapointing ones too. Last season was a very good season, they won the Portuguese league, cup [ I think ] and EL. Watching them in the EL, it was clear they were too good for it. This year they are going to play where they belong, in the Champions League. They have had their usual many returns of players out on loan, but the key transfers would be Falcao to Atletico Madrid for €40 million + a couple of other sales. Hulk and A Pereira have stayed for now, so although they have not made any money from the 2 of those guys , they have kept them and that keeps the team a strong one, so it is a win - win situation. You either get a lot of money or keep your best players, at least for another season. They bought 2 guys from Standard, Mangala and Defour + Kleber. I said after the Super Cup game that Porto did not have a striker on the pitch but I did not realise Kleber is a striker. Apparently Djalma, who they got from Maritimo, for free, is a striker/winger. I am not sure if they have bought a replacement for Falcao. The 2 guys they have signed do not seem to be of the same quality to Falcao though. Despite no 'major' replacement striker, I would say that it is still a strong squad and I expect Porto to top this group. We'll see how important Falcao was to the team but we have seen, countless times, that losing a major name as not hindered them too much in the past.
BTW I agree with Thunder that Porto are just as good away as they are at home, sometimes better. They can make up for home failiures with away wins so I would not put much emphasis on the home wins here.
Shakhtar Donetsk
This team has impressed over the years. They have gradually improved and were the last team to win the UEFA Cup. Just like Porto I think they have cemented their position as a Champions League team. They made it far last season and even when they played Barcelona, although Barca were better, the scoreline made the match seem far less close than it actually was, particularly the first leg. Shakhtar had chances to score more goals than they did. Anyway Aghahowa seems to be the man who is forever at Shakhtar but never considered a first team or even a reserve player. He has returned from loan. Are they not able to sell him? It seems they do not want him. Unless they have still got hope for him. Anyway he is not in the CL squad. They like signing guys from South America and have done it again + they seem to have bought back Seleznew [Seleznyow?] from Dnipro who previously signed him from Shakhtar. They have not really weakened their team much but have actually strengthened it. I think a lot of people are expecting a battle for 2nd between Shakhtar and Zenit but I think Shakhtar are a lot better.
Zenit
They got rid of Fernando Meira to Zaragoza and brought in Criscito from Genoa. Those are the notable transfers. I actually think they could have a difficult time keeping 3rd from APOEL, let alone battling for 2nd [or 1st]. So Michael to answer the question if APOEL fo finish 3rd I think it would be above Zenit. Last time Zenit lost to Auxerre in the qualifers and they are in the CL this time because they won the league. They do seem to have a very strong squad, they have to, they won the Russian league and that is no walk in the park. Bruno Alves, Domenico Criscito, Viktor Fayzulin, Igor Denisov, Vladimir Bystrov, Konstantyn Zyryanov, Danko Lazovic, Danny etc. Despite this I still feel that as a team they are not going to be strong enough to finish top 2, but they should be able to get 3rd.
APOEL
Ah another team who joins the list of teams to eliminate Wisla in the Champions League qualifers. They have signed Kaka from Hertha who I actually saw a lot of 2 years ago and he did not impress me, but to be honest noone did from that Hertha team who finished bottom. Also Aldo Adorno, Urko Pardo, Sanel Jahic and Marcelo Oliveira. As well as this they have Nuno Morais, Charalambides, Manduca, Ailton and Trickovski among other players. They have a 'nice' team and play football well. They can also 'hold their own' against 'big clubs.' The problem is I think they might do it again here, just 'hold their own' and make sure that they do not get humiliated by anyway. Or perhaps they might try to do more, as they already achieved 'avoiding humiliation' last time. They might be strong enough to outclass Wisla in a match but not Porto, Shakhtar or Zenit. They might get some home [or even away] draws again like they did last the time, but in the end, I doubt they are going to pick up enough points to not finish bottom.

Dreamy group!
I always wanted to see games against rising Porto and rising Shakhtar, Porto against Zenit, Shakhtar against Zenit. No we have all them in one group!
It could also be a EL group, but these teams have earned their position in CL!
The bad side is that whichever team fails, it will be a major disappointment!
Porto was fantastic last year and EL was a joy for them. It was like a training for this season play with the big boys. Winning this group means they are the "best of the rest" and new Ukranian-Russian powers have still many steps to go. Also they will show that they are ready to enter the giants group. Failing means they step backwards and new arrivals are gonna take their place.
Shakhtar broke all the records last year in the GS. If they beat Porto they get the prize of the "best of the rest" and they prove that they are still rising and the haven't reached their tops. Failing (3rd place) means that last season was just an exception of continuous CL failures.
Zenit was perfect last year in ELGS and returned to the top of Russian League. They are the most unexperienced team and they haven't done sth special except the Uefa Cup won. Every year begins with many ambitions, but always disappoints. Have they matured? After this draw, there are no excuses and 3rd place is a big failure.
APOEL makes this group even better! Except the local factor, I am interested on how a steady, low cost and well-controlled team will react against their rich opponents! They are a favourite for 4th place, but I am sure they are promising 6 very hard test for their opponents.
1. Porto 65%
2. Shakhtar 55%
3. Zenit 45%
4. APOEL 35%
I'd like to see a group with the Greek champion here too. A test to see where each country is going...

Group G
This is the only group where all the teams played the CL “recently”… Manchester City and Napoli are debutants (A), Trabzonspor as well (B), and Otelul Galati (C), Dinamo Zagreb was missing since the 90’s (D), Genk since 2002/2003 (E), Borussia Dortmund also since 2002/2003 (F), and finally Viktoria Plzen is also a debutant.
FC Porto is back to the CL. I prefer if they visit the EL once in a while, instead of keep losing the CL over and over again. But they can’t stay in the EL forever, after that visit they should return to the CL.
Compared to last season, they have a new coach, Vítor Pereira, who was the assistant coach last season.
They have 5 new players (goalkeeper Rafael Bracalli, defender Mangala, midfielder Defour and forwards Djalma and Kléber), and 4 players left (goalkeeper Beto, defender Sereno, midfielder Rúben Micael and forward Falcao).
FC Porto has some things in common with Inter: both have a new coach, both have few national players and many foreigners, big South American influence, both won’t use their biggest signings until January (Danilo and Forlán), both had to leave “big” players out of their CL squads (Alex Sandro & Iturbe, Córdoba & Muntari), both seem to be missing “something” up front, etc.
Shakhtar Donetsk finally progressed from the CL groups last season. They are in the same “stage” of teams like CSKA Moscow and Marseille – they did it once, after many failed attempts, and now the question is, will they start doing it regularly, or was it just an exception?
Fenerbahçe also did it once, and in the following season they couldn’t win a single game!
I think that Shakhtar Donetsk have a great coach and a great squad, they can become one of Europe’s super clubs.
Just like FC Porto, they also signed a player from the under-20 Brazil NT (Alan Patrick), that they haven’t even included in their CL squad… and both also have players from the team of 2 years ago that was beaten finalist (Alex Teixeira… and FC Porto’s Souza).
Shakhtar has 3 new players (Rybka, Dentinho and Seleznov), and 3 players left (Khudzhamov, Ischenko and Vitsenets) – so, they are basically the same team, with the extra that now they’ll have Fernandinho fit.
Zenit, although they won the UEFA Cup before Shakhtar, I think that they are behind Shakhtar… they have a “delay” of years.
This will be Shakhtar’s 7th CL participation, while it’s just Zenit’s 2nd. Last season Shakhtar was impressive (7 wins and 3 defeats in the CL) while Zenit started by being eliminated in the CL by Auxerre, and ended up being eliminated by Twente in the EL.
Only 1 player arrived (Criscito) and 1 player left (Fernando Meira), so, just like Shakhtar, they are basically the same team of last season (which is good in the Ukrainian’s case and not so good in Zenit’s case).
Finally, APOEL…
Their defender Kontis had a heart problem detected so he had to retire and they signed Kaká.
They are in serious trouble… If Zenit plays like they did in the EL groups last season, and Shakhtar plays like they did in the CL last season, and FC Porto plays like they did in the EL last season, APOEL will lose the 6 games.
They are not the weakest CL team, but they may end up with the worst CL record in this edition.
Well, two seasons ago, they were also supposed to lose the 6 games against Atlético Madrid, Chelsea and FC Porto, and they ended up with 3 points, levelled on points with the eventual EL winner!

You don’t have to follow any order… you don’t even have to comment every group.
And definitely you shouldn’t be afraid of saying whatever you think.
I like people who like football, and like to read their opinions, regardless of agreeing with them or not. What I don’t like are people who just come to brag about their club and start persecuting the others just because they said something about their “beloved” club, and usually these cowards also disappear when their “beloved” ones are out. That clearly isn’t your case, Polak.

Allow me to correct just a few things, though.
FC Porto hasn’t any player returning from loan in its current squad.
Rafael Bracalli was signed from Nacional, Djalma signed from Marítimo, Mangala and Defour from Standard Liège, and Kléber from Atlético Mineiro (Atlético Mineiro loaned him to Marítimo for 18 months before that).
Beside these 5 players, FC Porto also signed Danilo from Santos (who will only arrive in January), Alex Sandro also from Santos (who wasn’t included in the CL squad), Iturbe from Cerro Porteño (who only arrived now because he was under 18 so he couldn’t be transferred before… he wasn’t also included in the CL squad), and Kelvin from Paraná (who only arrived now because he was also under 18, and was already loaned to Rio Ave).
The player that was actually returning from loan, midfielder Castro, was loaned again, to Sporting Gijón again.
Kléber is a striker; he just seems to be a bad one.
Maybe he isn’t as bad as he seems, or maybe FC Porto can play with 3 “mobile” forwards up front (example: Hulk+James Rodríguez+Varela), or maybe FC Porto can change the tactic to just 2 men up front and add an extra midfielder…
So far Kléber only scored 2 goals in 6 games, which is extremely disappointing.

See Polak, here is a guy who isn’t shy of saying whatever he wants. “The rest”, what a nice way of describing these teams!
And the last part is great… this “the rest” category also includes Greece!
Are you sure that their category isn’t instead “rest of the rest where players go to rest”?

I was just joking. I am not nervous. I often say what I am thinking and often bad stuff about certain players and clubs. I just know there are guys that, as you said, only talk about their team, and might 'jump on you' if you say something they disagree with, or, even worse, something incorrect. To be honest I should have put it at the top, rather than in the preview for Porto, as the Porto fans on here are not like that.Dragonite wrote:And definitely you shouldn’t be afraid of saying whatever you think.

Ridiculous refereeing. Though I'm kind of happy Shakhtar got all this decisions for all those scared referees in UPL where they didn't get a defensive penalty for 3 years before not so long ago.
PS Somehow Shakhtar loss got them better chances for qualifying As they are still even with Zenit but played their toughest match in GS.

When it was still 0-1, refs called offside. Couldn't see the replay because my stream was terrible.sebastian_ua wrote:yeah,.. coach mentioned the clean goal that was canceled. when that happened?SHEV wrote:Ridiculous refereeing.
The red card was completely fair, though, Moutinho was lucky he didn't end up with a broken leg.
