2024/25 JD Cymru Premier European qualification explained

https://faw.cymru/cymru-leagues/news/20 ... explained/

For the 2024/25 season, the JD Cymru Premier will have its allocated number of UEFA qualification spots decrease from four to three.

The current format sees the JD Cymru Premier champions qualify for the UEFA Champions League and the JD Welsh Cup winner, JD Cymru Premier runner-up and JD Cymru Premier play-off winner qualify for the UEFA Conference League.

However, with one fewer spot on offer for the 2024/25 season, the League rules must be amended with regards to how UEFA qualification is determined. The JD Cymru Premier will receive one place in the UEFA Champions League and two places in the UEFA Conference League.

The JD Cymru Premier champions will still qualify for the UEFA Champions League and the JD Welsh Cup winner will still qualify for the UEFA Conference League.

The third and final spot in the UEFA Conference League will still be decided by a play-off, in order to protect the format of the league having a play-off with purpose. As such, the JD Cymru Premier runner-up would not automatically qualify for European competition.

Dependant on the winner of the 2024/25 JD Welsh Cup, one of the following three play-off scenarios will be enacted (subject to ratification at the JD Cymru Premier AGM):

Play-offs Scenario 1

If the winner of the JD Welsh Cup is a Club which finishes outside the 1st to 7th place positions in the JD Cymru Premier, then the 2nd to 7th placed Clubs will participate in the play-offs for a UEFA Conference League spot.

League position of JD Welsh Cup winner QF1 QF2 SF1 SF2 Final
Outside 1-7 4 v 7 5 v 6 2 v lowest ranked QF winner 3 v highest ranked QF winner SF1 winner v SF2 winner (highest ranked at home)

Play-offs Scenario 2

If the winner of the JD Welsh Cup is a Club which finishes inside the 2nd to 7th place positions in the JD Cymru Premier, then the Play-offs shall be configured as follows:

League position of JD Welsh Cup winner QF1 QF2 SF Final
2 4 v 7 5 v 6 QF1 winner v QF2 winner (highest ranked at home) 3 v SF winner
3 4 v 7 5 v 6 QF1 winner v QF2 winner (highest ranked at home) 2 v SF winner
4 3 v 7 5 v 6 QF1 winner v QF2 winner (highest ranked at home) 2 v SF winner
5 3 v 7 4 v 6 QF1 winner v QF2 winner (highest ranked at home) 2 v SF winner
6 3 v 7 4 v 5 QF1 winner v QF2 winner (highest ranked at home) 2 v SF winner
7 3 v 6 4 v 5 QF1 winner v QF2 winner (highest ranked at home) 2 v SF winner

Play-offs Scenario 3

If the winner of the JD Cymru Premier is also the winner of the JD Welsh Cup, then the 2nd placed Club in the JD Cymru Premier will automatically qualify for the UEFA Conference League.

The Play-offs will then commence as follows:

League position of JD Welsh Cup winner QF1 QF2 SF Final
1 4 v 7 5 v 6 QF1 winner v QF2 winner (highest ranked at home) 3 v SF winner

Yes, also from Wikipedia:
Teams placed 2nd-7th will enter one-off play-off matches for the third spot in the Conference League first qualifying round. This marks a change to the previous format, where it would only be teams placed 3rd-7th in the play-offs. However, due to the league losing a place in the Conference League due to its poor co-efficient score, the format was changed to include the 2nd placed team. The teams finishing 2nd and 3rd will receive byes to the play-off semi-final, whilst the other teams involved will play quarter-finals. However, if the league champions also win the Welsh Cup, then the 2nd placed team will automatically qualify for Europe, and the 3rd placed team will receive a bye to the play-off final.

Minsk-Šahter 0:0
Smorgon-Slavia 3:3
BATE-Sluck 6:0
Naftan-Isloč 2:1
Arsenal-Dinamo M 1:2
Neman-Dinamo B 2:0
Torpedo BelAZ-Dnepr 4:2
Gomel-Vitebsk 0:0

The top two teams won routinely, while DInamo Minsk had some problems in Dzeržinsk. The others (Slavia, Vitebsk etc) fell behind and it seems only three clubs are still serious contenders for top places. BATE found their form, but it is a little late. Lets see what they can do next week in Grodno.

League of Ireland Premier Division:
This week's matches were played early as this is the mid season break to coincide with the Euros.
The main talking points last night were two very late goals resulted in
(i) a win for 2nd place Derry at Bohemians &
(ii) a defeat for 3rd place (and defending champions) Shamrock Rovers at St. Pats

Results:
Galway Ud 3 - 0 Drogheda
Waterford 0 - 1 Shelbourne
Dundalk FC - 0 Sligo
Bohemians 1 - 2 Derry
St Pat At 2- 1 Shamrock Rovers

Table:
Ranking : Played: Points
Shelbourne - 22 - 43
Derry City . - 23 - 41
Shamrock R - 21 - 31
Waterford . - 21 - 31
Galway Utd - 20 - 30
St Pat. Ath. - 23 - 27
Sligo Rovers- 21 - 25
Bohemians. - 19 - 24
Drogheda U - 21 - 19
Dundalk FC - 21 - 16

Another win for Cork City in the First division leaves them leading that table by 11 points & looking like they will be coming straight back to the premier division next season.

Isloč-Gomel 1:0
Vitebsk-Torpedo BelAZ 0:1
Sluck-Dinamo M 0:5
Dinamo B-Dnepr 6:1
Neman-BATE 1:0
Arsenal-Smorgon 2:0
Šahter-Naftan 0:0
Slavia-Minsk 1:1

Torpedo BelAZ won in Vitebsk with a goal by Skaviš and defended the top place. Neman also won, although BATE almost stopped them, so nothing changed at the top. Dinamo Minsk scored five goals, while dissapointment of the round came by Slavia, who has not won a match in six rounds.

Smorgon-Sluck 4:1
Gomel-Šahter 1:2
Naftan-Slavia 0:1
Minsk-Arsenal 1:2
BATE Dinamo B 3:1
Dnepr-Vitebsk 1:2
Torpedo BelAZ-Isloč 1:0
Dinamo M-Neman 2:1

Not a match, but a scandal, said the media. It was expected however, Dinamo Minsk won in a usual way, controversially to say the least. First goal was from a made up penalty, than Neman scored, but the goal was overruled. Despite one man down and everything Neman managed to equalise and then Dinamo scored a winning goal from a position, that seemed offside. In a way it serves Neman right, they were quiet when the same things were happening to other teams last season. BATE won against Dinamo Brest and showed good form before the derby, while Torpedo BelAZ stayed on top with a late goal against Isloč.

Sligo Rvs 2 - 0 Shamrock Rovers

Slavia-Gomel 0:0
Dinamo B-Vitebsk 1:1
Šahter-Torpedo BelAZ 1:0
Neman-Smorgon 2:1
BATE-Dinamo M 0:2
Sluck-Minsk 1:0
Isloč-Dnepr 1:1
Arsenal-Naftan 0:3

BATE started the derby better, but then (their ex player) Podstrelov realised the first chance by Dinamo and it was basiacally all over. The home team did nothing afterwards, while the visitors scored another in the second half, won routinely and climbed to the top. The surprise of the week namely came in Soligorsk, where the home team won against Torpedo BelAZ. That was second win in a row and only third in a season for Šahter, which again has some hopes alive. Neman won against Smorgon with two goals by Savicki, while Slavia only drew again.
