2023 Asian Cup - Qatar

Post by Lorric »

The qualifying draw has been made.

Hard luck Maldives and Sri Lanka. :fingal:

It should have been home and away, but due to COVID it's in the mould of an U17 Euro qualifying elite round, with the group winners and all but the bottom runner-up going through. Could throw up a number of do or die matches on MD3... :smile1:

8th, 11th and 14th June is when the matches will be played.

The bottom 2 runners up should play a play-off IMO

Never cared about Asian football but I was looking for the stronger teams so I did some (very tiny) research and so this is the 3rd round of qualification for a competition in 2023 when the firs qualifying round was played in 2019!!!

I know this sounds crazy but I wonder if there is any chance that Russia will have to move to the AFC and leave UEFA, even if the situation in Ukraine calms down?, because there is a high chance that the full boycott of Russian teams could continue for a long time. I also wouldn't mind Russian teams competing against Iranian and Arab clubs.

China has given up its hosting right to the Jun/Jul 2023 tournament due to Covid. No news yet on where the tournament will be reallocated to.

Interesting. China won the right to host by default, as they were the only one to bid.

India, Indonesia, Thailand and South Korea had expressed interest, but withdrew.

The insane approach (zero covid policy) of the chinese gov. is so weird.

Qualifiers are now in progress, some have finished, there are matches all through today. The 2v3 games are today.

As oversaturated as the calendar is right now, the U23 Asian Cup is well underway and there are streams of all games on the AFC Youtube.

Mongolia narrowly lost 1-0 to Palestine.

They are hosting the Group, but now they would need a historic result vs the Philippines.

I'm watching Uzbekistan vs Sri Lanka. Should be a simple task for Uzbekistan. I was curious how many fans they'd get, the place is FULL.
