So, title race is only between Barca and Real, but the race for European football still very open, with like ten clubs involved: who do you think will qualify?
Well . . . Can la Real avoid the dips in form that have plagued them in the past :?: Can Athletic keep their solid block working at high efficiiency :?: Can Atleti recover the form that seems to have deserted them :?: Can Pellegrini keep Betis on track :?: They want a CL spot VERY badly . . . Does Osasuna have the staying power that they showed back in . . .2007 :?: Valencia and Villarreal also have a shot, while Sevilla looks unlikely to put it back together. Rayo, of course, would be one that I'd love to see make it as they did back in 2000-2001 when they were knocked out of the Copa de la UEFA by . . . Alavés :!:

And a Merry Christmas to all :!: The last week of the year is ALMOST always rest time for LaLiga, but not this time around the block :!: Since LaLiga has been "dormant" since mid-November, there is some catching up to be done, and that will start with Jornada 15, which will start and end in the last three days of 2022, to wit

Thurs. 29 Dec. HERE WE GO, CAMPERS :!:

1700 Girona 2, Rayo 2 Girona is 13th in LaLiga, five points above the drop. Rayo . . . well, can they avoid a melt-down like they had about this time last season :?: They're in eighth place, just a point back of a (probable) European spot, and 11 points above the drop. At 2', an error by Girona's defense gives the ball to Camello, who avoids the only defender who could stop him and makes it 0-1. At 34', Castellanos ties it by converting a pk--1-1, now at the half in Montilivi. At 62', Isi Palazón fires in Rayo's second on the day--1-2; assist by Camello ( I thiink :!: ) At 65', Unai López, on for Trejo, comes close for Rayo. At 74', pk awarded to Girona for a handball; at 75', Samu Saiz converts and it's 2-2. At 79', Stuani comes on for Girona and Falcao comes on for Rayo. At 89', Dimitrievski saves the bacon for Rayo. At 96', Girona puts the ball in the net, but the would-be-goal is disallowed for offside. 11,451 in Montilivi. Rayo, at the moment, is seventh, ahead of Osasuna on GD. Girona is 12th, ahead of Valladolid on GD.

1915 Betis 0, Athletic 0 Big game for both, as #6 hosts #4. Each has 24 points going in; Athletic is in the last CL spot. Scoreless first half in the Benito Villamarín. 53,565 reported on hand. The game ends scoreless, not for lack of trying. Athletic, at the moment, is in fourth place; Betis has climbed to fifth.

2130 Atlético 2, Elche 0 Atleti is in fifth place, back of the last CL spot on GD. Elche will be VERY hard-put to avoid the drop, as they have yet to win in 14 games so far this season; they are eight points back of the lowest team not in the drop . . . and Elche has only four points to date :!: And at kickoff, Atleti can climb to third place with a win. Scoreless first half in the Nuevo Metropolitano. At 56', Joao Felix makes it 1-0; Morata scores the second at 74', as Atleti wins it and at the moment is in third place.

Fri. 30 Dec.

1700 Getafe 2, Mallorca 0 Geta is 15th in LaLiga, three points above the drop. Mallorca is in mid-table, eight points above the drop and four points back of a European spot. Scoreless first half in the Alfonso Pérez. 9,755 reported on hand. At 51', Enes Unal makes a perfect pass to Borja Mayoral, who scores--1-0. At 78', Borja Mayoral picks off a bad pass and scores his second of the game--2-0. Getafe wins at home for the first time since 11 Sept.'.; they climb, for the moment, to 13th place.

1915 Celta 1, Sevilla 1 Both will hope to improve on very poor seasons to date: here #17 hosts #18, one point separating the two. Sevilla in the drop    Who'da thunk it :!: At 33', Gabri Veiga breaks free to chip the ball over Bono, thus giving Celta the lead--1-0. Halftime in Balaídos. Thus far, it looks as though Sevilla could play for a week and not score. :fingal: 13,653 on hand in Balaídos. At 53', Bono keeps Sevilla from going further behind; and at 54', Kike Salas scores with a header to tie for Sevilla--1-1. At 86', Sevilla is down to 10 men. The final is 1-1, which keeps Sevilla in the drop but they could pass Espanyol on GD tomorrow. Celta remains a point ahead of Sevilla and Cádiz.

1915 Cádiz 1, Almería 1 Cádiz is in the drop, next to last, but just one point back of the lowest two teams nit in the drop, and five points shy of 14th place Almería. At 40', Melero gives Almería the lead--0-1; Almería has won just one point in their seven road games to date. Will this be a breakthough :?: And Cádiz has scored fewer goals than any other team in LaLiga to date. It's 0-1 at the half. At 83', Lucas Pérez ties it for Cádiz--1-1. And 1-1 is the final--Cádiz remains 19th, while Almería gets their second away-from-home point of the season and passes Valladolid on GD.

2130 Valladolid 0, Real Madrid 2 Valladolid is in lower mid=table, six points above the drop. El Realísimo's loss in Vallecas in the next-to-last game before the break has left them two points shy of leaders Barça. Valladolid hanging tough through 36'. At 36', Courtois saves the furniture for Real. Scoreless first half in Pucela. Valladolid hanging tough; el Realísimo looking sluggish. Can Valladolid get a point out of this game :?: 25,950 reported on hand in Pucela. At 68', Courtois saves the furniture again . . . At 81', VAR handball pk awarded to Real Madrid, converted by Benzema at 83'--0-1. Sergio León sees a red card at 82', after the penalty is confirmed. Benzema, assisted by Camavinga, ices it at 89'--0-2. Real retakes first place, at least until Barça plays the early game tomorrow.. Valladolid falls to 15th place, although they're tied on points with the three teams immediately ahead of them.

Sat. 31 Dec.--and an almost Happy New Year to you :!:

1400 Barça 1, Espanyol 1 Barça leads LaLiga, with a record of 12-1-1 and a two-point cushion over Real Madrid. They have yet to concede a goal at home in LaLiga thus far in seven games. Their local "rivals" are 16th, one point above the drop; they've won just twice so far this season. At 7', Marcos Alonso heads in after a corner--1-0. And it's still 1-0 at the half--beautiful day in the Camp Nou with 88,095 reported in attendance. At 71' penalty in favor of Espanyol, as Joselu is fouled in the area. Joselu converts at 73' to tie it--1-1. This is the first goal conceded by Barça in the Camp Nou so far in LaLiga this season. At 78', Barça is coming unglued: Jordi Alba sees a second yellow for protesting too much. And at 80', Cabrera and Vini Souza of Espanyol are dismissed in short order . . . This is getting hard to follow. Apparently only Vini was ejected; in any case, Barça is unable to put it together to score a winner, and Espanyol takes a point from the Camp Nou. Barça retains first place, but only by GD over Real Madrid. Espanyol takes home a big point; they retain 16th place, one point and two places above the drop.

1615 Real Sociedad 2, Osasuna 0 La Real is in third place--a CL spot :!: :!: They lead Atleti, Athletic, and Betis by two points each; they lead seventh-place Osasuna by three points. At 22', Brais Méndez scores to give la Real the lead--and lift them past Atleti back into third place, at least for the moment. Halftime in Anoeta, where 34,847 are on hand. At 64', Sorloth makes it 2-0 for la Real. At 86', Oyarzábal comes in for la Real--he's been out since 19 March with an ACL injury. And la Real returns to third place. Osasuna drops to ninth, now back of Villarreal and Rayo.

1615 Villarreal 2, Valencia 1 And another good game to finish out the calendar year :!: The Yellow Submarine is ninth, two points back of the last European spot and two points ahead of an under-achieving Valencia, which has an anemic 1-3-2 record away from home this season. At 21', Cavani scores to give Valencia the lead--0-1, and Valencia passes Villarreal and is now in ninth place. But at 45', Chukwueze ties it for Villarreal, now back ahead of Valencia at halftime of today's game. Better late than never, as Foyth scores the winner for Villarreal at 89', lifting the Yellow Submarine to seventh place, past Osasuna and Rayo by a point.

Jornada 16 coming right up :!:

Fri. 6 Jan.

1830 Elche 0, Celta 1 Elche has time to avoid the drop, but that is looking very unlikely, given that they have yet to win a game this season and are nine points back of Celta, the lowest team not in the drop. Celta is just one point above the drop, so they'll be trying extra-hard to win in the Martínez Valero. At 6', Veiga centers; goalie can't hold the ball and iago Aspas puts it in--0-1. Still 0-1 at halftime in the Martínez Valero, where there are 20,121 on hand. Second half is scoreless; Celta holds on to win and climb four points above the drop. Elche loses for the 12th time in 16 games.

2100 Valencia 0, Cádiz 1 Valencia is in mid-table in a poor season thus far for los Ché. Still, they are only five points shy of a European spot. Cádiz is next-to -last, one point shy of the two lowest teams not in the drop. At 9', Rubén Sobrino of Cádiz assists Alcaraz, who scores from the top of the area--0-1 :!: And it's still 0-1 at the half in Mestalla. Can Cádiz win it and thus climb out of the drop :?: 39,703 reported on hand. Cádiz holds on to win and climbs, for the moment, above the drop, passing Sevilla and Espanyol, both of which have yet to play in this jornada.

Sat. 7 Jan.

1615 Villarreal 2, Real Madrid 1 Villarreal, the Yellow Submarine, has returned to their own stadium--and with a late win over Valencia to climb to the last European spot. El Realísimo is in second place, back of Barça only on GD. Scoreless at halftime in the Estadio de la Cerámica. At 47', Yéremi Pino gives the Yellow Sub the lead; although Courtois gets a hand on the shot, he can't keep it out--1-0. At 58', VAR handball penalty awarded to Real Madrid; Benzema converts at 60'--1-1. And tit for tat--Villarreal is awarded the same type of penalty as was el Real, converted by Gerard Moreno at 63'--2-1. And that turns out to be the final score. Barça will stay atop LaLiga; Villarreal climbs, for the moment, into fifth place.

1830 Mallorca 1, Valladolid 0. Mallorca is in mid-table, seven points above the drop. Valladolid trails Mallorca by two points and four places. Scoreless first half in Son Moix. 14,129 reported on hand. At 63', Valladolid hits the crossbar. As the last seconds tick off the clock, Abdón Prata, on for Muriqi, heads in to win it for Mallorca. Mallorca is now tenth, three points ahead of Valencia. Valladolid will likely remain 15th.

2100 Espanyol 2, Girona 2 This is a catalán derby of sorts. Espanyol is one point and two places above the drop, thanks to the point they won in the Camp Nou last weekend. Girona is four points and four places ahead of Espanyol. Espanyol must win to be sure of finishing the jornada above the drop. At 32', Espanyol gives the ball away and Toni Villa puts the ball in the net for Girona, with a deflection included--0-1. Halftime in Cornellà-El Prat. Can Espanyol come back to win :?: 21,429 on hand. At 51', Javi Puado ties it for Espanyol as he puts in a rebound in the area--1-1. And at 76', Joselu gives Espanyol the lead with a header--2-1, and this score would lift Espanyol above the drop. Wow, at 85', Yángel Herrera heads in to make it 2-2 and put Espanyol back in the drop. Girona would be alone in 12th place if this is the final score. And 2-2 it is. Espanyol is, at the moment, top of the drop.

Sun. 8 Jan.

1400 Almería 0, Real Sociedad 2 Could be a really good game :!: Almería is very tough at home, with a record of 5-0-2; they're five points above the drop. La Real is on a roll, having won their last two to hold onto third place, four points ahead of the highest team not in a CL spot; their record on the road matches Almería's home record of 5-0-2. Scoreless first half in the Juegos Mediterráneos. Not a pretty first half :!: At 47', Take Kubo assists David Silva, who makes it 0-1--after VAR review of possible offside. Just five minutes later, at 52', Sorloth makes it 0-2, which turns out to be the final score, as la Real nails down third place for the time being.

1615 Rayo 1, Betis 2 Rayo is one point and one place back of the last European spot. Betis is sixth, two points ahead of Rayo. At 7', Luiz Henrique gives Betis the lead as he scores after a corner--0-1. Replays show that the goal was an own goal by Balliu. At 20', Camello puts in a rebound to tie it--1-1. At 40', Luiz Henrique really does put one in the net--1-2 at halftime in Vallecas, where there are 13,119 on hand. At 62', RdT comes in for Rayo, back with the vallecanos for another stay. At 63', Isi Palazón puts the ball in the net, but VAR says there was an offside--no goal. Betis holds on to win--at the moment, they are in the last CL spot.

1830 Sevilla 2, Getafe 1 The strangest record of the season to date: Sevilla has not won at home in seven tries to date in LaLiga :!:  Will the sleeping giant awaken against Getafe, which is five points and four places ahead of top-of-the-drop Sevilla :?: The way the other games have worked out, Sevilla would rise above the drop, albeit only on GD over Cádiz. At 36' comes Sevilla's goal, as Acuña heads in a free kick by Rakitic--1-0. Now at the half--will Sevilla win at home for the first time this season :?: 35,389 reported on hand in the Sánchez Pizjuán. At 79', Bono saves the furniture for Sevilla. At 80', it looks as though Sevilla is gonna do it: Oliver Torres crosses for Rafa Mir to head in--2-0; both the cross and the header were 18 caret gold :!: :applause: :applause: But at 87', Borja Mayoral heads in for Getafe, and it's game on :!: Sevilla holds on by the skin of their teeth, so to speak, and is above the drop on GD ahead of Cádiz, now the top of the drop.

2100 Atlético 0, Barça 1 Game of the Week. Atleti is fourth, and probably needs a win to stay in a CL spot. Barça leads LaLiga, but only on GD over Real Madrid after failing to beat Espanyol in the Camp Nou last time out. Incredible game :!: Ugly game :!: . . . as when Savic and Ferrán Torres engaged in a wrestling match at about 92' and both saw red cards. At 22', Dembélé scores what will prove to be the winner--0-1. With Atleti pouring forth in the second half, Ter Stegan stopped everything but the kitchen sink, and Araújo stopped that at about 92'. Atleti falls out of the CL spots with the loss; for now, Betis is fourth and tomorrow Athletic would take first place with a win over Osasuna. Barça's lead over second-place Real Madrid is now three points.

Mon. 9 Jan. 2100 Athletic 0, Osasuna 0 Good game here :!: If Atlético fails to beat Barça, Athletic would catch or pass the colchoneros with a win here. Osasuna is in ninth place, just two points back of fifth-place Athletic. And, indeed, a win would lift Athletic into fourth place, the last CL spot, on GD ahead of Betis. A win by Osasuna would lift them past Rayo and Athletic into seventh place. Scoreless first half in San Mamés Barri. Somewhat disappointing in that goal chances were almost none; the best was neutralized by Aitor Fernández of Osasuna on a shot by Sancet. And the game ends scoreless. Osasuna has one real scoring chance, at 90', neutralized by Unai Simón. Athletic is in seventh place; Osasuna is eighth.

Mon the Rayo!
Ah, lad, watched Rayo be eliminated from the Copa del Rey yesterday--they lost 2-0 in Gijón (where I have been able in the past to attend many a game, but of course yesterday I could only watch via streaming). :fingal: :fingal: :fingal:

I haven't been following the round of 32 of the Copa del Rey very closely, but it seemed like fun to watch the Intercity-Barça yesterday. Apparently, Intercity has existed only since 2017; they play in Third Division. Playing Barça was a bit of a prize for them, and the game kicked off in the Rico Pérez in Alicante at 2100 PST. The scoreline went like this--intercity 0. Barça 1; then 1-1, 1-2, 2-2, 2-3, and 3-3 in regulation, so the game went overtime. Ansu Fati, on as a sub, scored the winner with the help of a deflection in the overtime--3-4, and Barça won it as expected . . . but what an incredible game Intercity played; all three of their goals were scored by the same player, Oriol Soldevila :!:  In LaLiga, Barça has given up just six goals in 15 games, and here Intercity, a third-level team, scores three in one game against them :!:

Jornada 17 kicks off Fri. 13 Jan. . . . but this jornada does not end until 2 Feb., because of the Spanish SuperCup. Don't like this aspect of their scheduling, which makes three of the current four top teams in LaLiga play fewer games than the rest until "catch-up" in Feb. Well, starting

Fri. 13 Jan. 2100 Celta 1, Villarreal 1 Celta is one point and two places above the drop. Villarreal is on a "high" after their home win over Real Madrid; the Yellow Submarine is now sixth, just a point back of the last CL spot, and since Betis won't be playing in LaLiga this weekend, a win would leave Villarreal fourth or fifth. A point each in Balaídos. At 15', Gerard Moreno gives the Yellow Sub the lead from just outside the area--0-1. At 68', Strand Larsen ties for Celta--1-1. Villarreal is, at the moment, in fourth place, ahead of Betis on GD. Celta is two points above the drop.

Sat. 14 Jan.

1400 Valladolid 0, Rayo 1 Valladolid is in 15th place, two points and three places above the drop. Rayo is ninth, three points shy of the last European spot. At 31', handball penalty in favor of Rayo; at 33', Masip saves Isi Palazón's pk--still 0-0. Scoreless first half in Pucela, owing most to Jordi Masip, Valladolid's goalie. 19,969 on hand in Pucela. At 65', Alvaro García assists Isi Palazón, who makes up for his failure to score with the pk--very nice goal here--0-1. Rayo holds on to win; at the moment, they are eighth, back of Athletic on GD. Valladolid falls to 16th and could be passed by Sevilla and Cádiz.

Real was pathetic and deservedly lost.
The team was great before the money cup in december and ever since Real got back into playing they have not been the same. I suspect a trophyless season apart from the Club World Cup but even the best cant win always.
