I think we re starting to see the effect of the generation who grew up with Ireland as a rich country (in contrast with the previous ones) meaning that more and more talented kids could purise their sports without that many financial issues.
I think the main reason for Irish modest success in the Olympics overall is that most popular sports in Ireland like Gaelic football, hurling or rugby union are not Olympic sports. This Paris Olympics they just had 1 or 2 great individuals in swimming, rowing, gymnastics, not sure its sustainable. Best Irish athletic talent still go to other sports that I mentioned earlier.

That's how it is for many mid-sized European countries, 4-5 great individuals bring the medals: Sjoestroem and Duplantis for Sweden, Warholm and Ingebrigtsen for Norway (Rooth was a massive upset), cyclists and Thiam for Belgium etc.

Spain won the Walking Relay - not surprised at all Spain is good at this in contrast with most athletics event, the Spanish have walking and jogging in their daily life more than most countries.

France finished 4th in their Group but are now beating 1st of the other Group Germany by 5 goals in Handball.

Happened in basketball too, France doesn't finish 1st but somehow upsets the favourite in the QF. Even in Volleyball they came back from 2-0 down to Germany.

Men Cycling Sprint preliminaries had an Olympic Record followed by a World Record about 5 min later and another World Record about 5 min after that. Has it ever happened that in about 10 min a single sport had an Olympic Record and two World Records?

I can see that happening in a finals of a long jump or a sport with that type of a format, having that in the preliminaries is even more amazing in my view.

The long jump WR stands since 1990.

You were lucky cause in the normal time it was 6 seconds to go and France just had to keep the ball but French player made that idiotic pass that was intercepted :grin1: But may be it was your reward for fighting hard and never giving up. France despite finishing fourth were big favorites, alongside Denmark they are the best team of the last 10-15 years. I also have to highlight Danish refs, I thought they were fair for both teams and not homers unlike refs in some other sports.

Thanks.

My point was that in the finals of a sport like long jump, I can see three three great athletes competing and the Olympic/World Record being broken 3 time in 10 min (one breaks the record and the other two better it on their next jump). It’s hard for me to see the record being broken 3 times during 10 min in a preliminaries of Olympic competition (clearly it has happened, I just find it amazing).

In cycling its normal, better bikes=more world records :grin1: and bikes are getting better every year. Its a lot harder to break records in athletics
