Great and unique opening ceremony, the idea to use Parisian landmarks as the canvas and the choice to embrace a mix of traditional, modern, stylish and weird French culture made the show memorable.

Annoying because our woman is 1st in women's ranking, but it was deserved. Several more chances for her incoming.

edit: Germany beat Japan 3:2 in men's volleyball, surprising win as the Asians are 2nd in the world ranking!

China wins the 1st gold - the 2nd is women's diving so probably China again.

Upset in volleyball, Japan lost to Germany!

Now that was a sweeeeeeet victory in men's hockey. Spain were the better team, they just couldn't finish, while we were utterly ruthless in front of goal, winning 4-0! :applause: :applause: :applause:

China 1st, Australia 2nd, GB 3rd in Diving. The only realistic chance for China to lose a gold in diving is at 10m men synchronized from Daley and Williams of Great Britain (Daley with Lee were the only ones to beat the Chinese in Tokyo).

Daley was one of our flag bearers, so we'll see.

They're already annoying me, waffling on and on in the studio with our limited coverage while there's swimming and rowing going on with our athletes they should be covering.

Hopefully in the tennis Court 6 belongs to us today, because our men are on it back to back to back in singles action. No Murray, he had to pull out, he'll only be in action in doubles, the end of his career. We also have Katie Boulter in action today on Court 12. Nobody playing doubles for us today.

It seems like the rain is still pouring down in Paris. So only tennis on the courts with roofs so far. The other courts will at earliest start at 13.30. Danish Clara Tauson will play as the second one on court 9, vs Canadian Bianca Andreescu.

Could also have an impact on the cycling time trials, which are starting at 14.30. If the roads have dried out for the latter starters, or if it starts raining again when some of them are on the course. There are only 35 riders in each category with 1.5 minute between them, so the difference will hopefully not be massive, especially as most of the favourites start close to each other. Ellen van Dijk starts 20 min before Brown and Dygert, who are the two last women to ride. For the men, Tarling, Ganna and Evenepoel all start within the last five riders, so should be equal conditions. The two biggest outsiders, Wout van Aert and Magnus Sheffield start around 20 minutes before.

We had an upset in judo according to the commentators, an 18 years old Swedish girls beat the no.1 ranked athlete from Italy.

The gold in the women's category is between Sweden, Japan, Mongolia (!) and Spain.

In the men's the gold is between France, Spain, Turkey and Kazakhstan.

Well they managed to get all the rowing and swimming in eventually, even if it wasn't live, and they're showing the badminton match which I already know we lost, so maybe I need to chill and trust the process here. Though they did have the tennis off, you'd think they'd show that if it was on?

Anyway, all three crews went through, no repechages and 5/6 swimming entries went through.

Watched swimming and even for morning heats times were pedestrian. I think the problem is with the depth of the pool. In general the deeper the water depth, the faster the pool. In a shallow pool, waves will “bounce” or reflect off the bottom of the pool, which causes the entire pool to become more turbulent or “wavy”. Waves do not make for a fast pool, calm water does. The additional water in a deeper pool acts a quelling force to lessen the impact of the wave (or makes it smaller).
And the depth in Paris pool is only 2.15 metres while in most other meets its around 3 metres. So this could be the first Olympics without even one WR in swimming, unfortunately. I guess winning is more important than breaking records and all athletes are on equal terms anyway. But still Olympics and such slow times... it doesn't look right.

There is no team sport where Japan isn't fun to watch.

All their men NTs are based on speed and fluidity, rather than raw power and physicality, in every sport, and this makes them very fun for the neutral.
