Don't forget Hertha Berlin, although it wasn't called that in GDR league.

Hertha BSC is a club from West Berlin, they were founding members of the West German Bundesliga. They are not a GDR club.

As for why GDR Clubs went down, like all of east Germany, they suffered from serious financial trouble and old and inadequate stadiums and training facilities. Also, several of their best players left immediately after the borders opened for money and fame in west German clubs - Matthias Sammer, Ulf Kirsten, Andreas Thom, Thomas Doll, to name some. And finally, while the Oberliga was not that bad, the Bundesliga was simply way stronger.

However it should be noted that Magdeburg got a new stadium recently, Dresden will get a new stadium, both average attendances are around 10k spectators in the 3rd division, and East German football is generally pretty stable, maybe even increasing in strength over the last 10 years, except for the hooligan problems especially among saxonys clubs

They must have slipped underneath my radar then,as I only heard of them from the late 90'ies,and assumed they had emerged from the restructuring of the old GDR teams as an old team with a new name.Sorry for mistaking them.

La Berichonne de Châteauroux was only 1 year in the top French League during season 1997/1998 but was relagated the same year.

Based on the all-time standings:

FC Arges Pitesti
FCM Bacau
Petrolul Ploiesti
FC Brasov
Sportul Studentesc Bucuresti
Jiul Petrosani
Politehnica Timisoara (not the one currently in Liga I)
Progresul (FC National) Bucuresti
ASA Targu Mures - I think the team no longer exists - it was moved to Ungheni or something like that.

To badgerboy:

In response to "Why Elche?"--this is another team I wouldn't mind seeing back in first division, since Elche is one of the teams I "grew up with" football-wise in Spain back in the late sixties and early seventies. They captured my imagination and fancy back then--a team from a very small city (town) with a stadium called Altabix that came to Madrid and took home a 1-1 tie and could hang in there with some of the other big boys. Altabix is but a memory; the new stadium, the Martinez Valero, has been used for at least one match by the national team. And Elche has just moved into third place in second division by beating Sporting Gijon 3-1 yesterday, so it could happen this year.

FC Arges are the first place in Serie B2, 5 points clear of second place. I think they will play in Liga 1 next year. FC Brasov are also first place in Serie B1, 11 points in front of CS Otopeni. They too will play in Liga 1 next year.

The rest have a very slim change. All of them are mid table teams in Liga 2 or 3.

moro, FC Baia Mare and Olimpia Satu Mare are playing their derby in Serie C6.

TY Cosmin. I lost contact with my special team from childhood, Baia Mare. I saw them drawing 0-0 against Real Madrid (83 or 84) in CWC, then they opened the score in Bernabeu (finally lost 2-5). Snow was snow at the time, summer was summer, we were kids and playing football all the day long :D great souvenirs.

The last time I heard ASA Tg. Mures had been renamed Maris Tg. Mures; what has happened to this team I don't know; on www.romaniansoccer.ro it's listed under 'Other' :?:
