Nearly all associations postponed professional football due to the coronavirus in March 2020.
UEFA urged all associations to try to finish the football season, but in some
countries that was not be possible because the government banned all football
until the end of the summer of 2020. In those cases the clubs for European
football will be selected based on sporting merit in the 2019/20 domestic
competitions. All participating clubs were to be known before August 3, 2020.
The number of teams of each country is determined by the
position in the UEFA Country Ranking 2019.
Fair Play teams no longer qualify for the Europa League.
All participating teams must have obtained a licence for European football issued
by the corresponding national association in accordance with the UEFA Club Licensing Regulations.
The use of the Champions League title holder spot and the Europa League title
holder spot was still unknown at the draws of the first qualifying rounds at
August 9/10. That means that the original access list was used.
After the CL semi-final at August 19 it became clear that the Champions League
title holder (Paris Saint-Germain or Bayern München) qualified already for the
CL group stage by the domestic league, so the access list in later draws will be
re-balanced as follows:
Ajax moves from CL-Q4ch to the CL-GS,
Slavia Praha and Olympiakos Piraeus move from CL-Q3ch to CL-Q4ch,
Two CL-Q2ch losers get a bye from EL-Q3ch to EL-Q4ch (determined by a draw).
After the EL quarter-finals at August 11 it became clear that the Europa League
title holder (Sevilla, Manchester United, Shakhtar Donetsk, or Internazionale)
qualified already for the CL group stage by the domestic league, so the access
list in later draws will be re-balanced as follows:
Stade Rennais moves from CL-Q3nc to the CL-GS,
FK Krasnodar moves from CL-Q3nc to CL-Q4nc,
Sparta Praha moves from from EL-Q3 to EL-GS,
Anorthosis Famagusta and Vojvodina Novi Sad move from from EL-Q2 to EL-Q3.
