Interesting week in Turkey.

Besiktas lost at Karabük on Friday (2-1), giving the opportunity to its opponents to close the gap.
But yesterday, Fener drew at Bursa (1-1), despite scoring first and playing the entire second half against a 10-men team. (I must admit that the penalty Fener conceded was a shameful decision by the ref, though)

And today, first Basaksehir suffered a heavy defeat at Kasimpasa (4-0) then Galatasaray lost this golden opportunity by losing at home against Kayseri (1-2).

In the end Fener got 1 pt closer to the top 3, and it's funny that all the teams above them lost at the same time.

Interesting to see how much Besiktas, Fener and Galatasaray spent money (= transfer fees only) for their starting eleven.

BESIKTAS

Fabri
Adriano - 600k
Marcelo - 2m
Atinç - (-)100k
Gökhan Gönül
Talisca - 2m
Oguzhan - 500k
Quaresma - 1,7m
Atiba
Babel
Cenk Tosun

Total - 6,7m €

FENERBAHCE

Volkan
Kjaer - 7,65m
Ismail Köybasi
Van der Wiel
Mehmet Topal - 4,5m
Josef de Souza - 8m
Ozan Tufan - 7m
Volkan Sen - 2,5m
Stoch - 5,5m
Moussa Sow

Total - 35,15m €

GALATASARAY

Muslera - 6,75m
Linnes - 2m
Chedjou - 6,3m
Semih Kaya
Sabri
Nigel de Jong
Selçuk Inan
Garry Rodrigues - 3,5m
Yasin - 2,5m
Josue
Podolski - 2,5m

Total - 23,55m€

These were the starting 11 in the last league matchday.
However, these are not necessaril the best 11 for these teams (for instance Sneijder and Bruma would be first choice payers for Gala (+more than 10m), or Skrtel for Fener (roughly +6m) whereas for Besiktas only Atinç is not a real starter and Cenk Tosun is sometimes replaced by Aboubakar (+3m)

1 player of Fener or Gala is worth the entire 11 of Besiktas, and it's funny that they are respectively 10 and 7 points behind them.

So, it's only Turkey vs. Germany for now, this close to the deadline. Weren't the Scandinavian countries + Finland going to bid?

Yes, they intend to bid for either 2024 or 2028.
They still have until the 3rd of Match 2017 to announce their intentions to host this tournament.

Other potential bids -
Holland
Russia and Estonia (less likely)

For quite a long time this season Istanbul Basaksehir were the leaders. However they were finally caught up by Besiktas. Galatasaray were within striking distance on both of them a few weeks ago but some poor results lately mean they are drifting away from the 2nd spot and instead looking over their shoulders for Fenerbahce. Trabzonspor is on a good run of form lately and up to 5th. Last couple of years have had bad results for them and this year should be an improvement. Currently it looks as if Besiktas is going to run away with the title. The good thing is that the 5 teams which I consider the strongest in Turkey are currently occupying the top 5 in the league ( though Bursaspor and Osmanlispor would have something to say about that - an excellent run by the Ottomans in the Europa league). Even in the Turkish cup Fenerbahce and Istanbul Basaksehir are the strong contenders which remain. So the current situation is good from the European perspective.

As for my favourite team Galatasaray, yet another coach was sacked. If someone lasts for a year that would be considered a huge accomplishment. Lets see how much the new coach lasts.

From the EL perspective, only Besiktas remains and what a clash with Olympiacos! Fenerbahce always flatter to deceive, losing to lowly Krasnodar. I have no complaints against Osmanlispor though, even after they drew 0-0 away and lost at home. They came quite a long way. This year was a good one for Turkish coefficient; up to 8.5 now, though with 4 teams in group stage it wont be unfair to expect a minimum of 10 points.

I agree with most of your post here.

But for Turkish cup, Fener and Basaksehir would face each other in the semi-finals (if Basaksehir qualifies, as they drew the first leg at home). Hopefully one of them will win the cup, otherwise a weaker team will be in EL group stage next season.

I am also disappointed by Fener and Osmanli. Not because of their opponents, but because of circumstances. Fener finished first in a tough group, and Osmanli in front of Villarreal. Surely they could have done better than 2 draws in 4 games (and the opponents were more or less equals in terms of strenght.)

About this week, I don't want to say a lot of things but here are the main points -

* Trabzonspor is the best team in the league in 2017, incredible performance so far and they may even overtake Fener / Galatasaray and qualify for EL if they continue like this. (won 2-0 at home v Galatasaray this week, 7 W 2 D since January)
* Besiktas drew for a second time in a row, losing ground to Basaksehir in the fight for the title. The break is just what we needed right now and all these points lost are due to EL games that Besiktas had to play.
And... Aboubakar. He just got a red card against Olympiakos, 4 days later instead of making up for that mistake he gets another red card. Incredible. The team was tired but it was almost impossible to win 10 v 11 this time at Antalya (0-0). Porto, I really hope that you will get him back.
* Basaksehir lost important 2 points at home against Karabük (3-3), after 3 consecutive wins. Still, it seems that they will follow Besiktas until at least the real key game of the season - end April Basaksehir v Besiktas.
* Fener and Gala seems to have lost all their will to play, and have no goals. Advocaat (Fener) already announced that he will retire at the end of the season, whereas Tudor (Galatasaray) didn't convince so far and is doing worse than his predecessor. I expect a lot of cleaning for these two teams this summer.

Basaksehir lost at Akhisar this week, and the gap with leader Besiktas has increased to 5 points.
With this loss, Besiktas has a bigger advantage now, and Fener / Gala might hope to grab the 2nd place.

Remaning games for the title -

BESIKTAS

Trabzon (A)
Adana
Basaksehir (A)
Fener
Bursa (A)
Kasimpasa
Gaziantep (A)
Osmanli

BASAKSEHIR

Galatasaray
Rize (A)
Besiktas
Antalya (A)
Gençlerbirligi
Trabzon (A)
Adana
Kayseri (A)

In terms of difficulty, they are more or less equal imo.
We will know a little bit more next week, before the second break in the league. Basaksehir hosts Gala (critical for the second spot as well, assuming Gala will beat Adana at home tomorrow) whereas Besiktas plays in Trabzon (still unbeaten this year)

Critical week in Turkey, with a lot of key games.

Trabzonspor (5th) v Beşiktaş (1st)

In my opinion one of our most important games this season. Trabzon is still unbeaten this year (7 W / 2 D), and they are only 3 points away from an EL ticket.
If Besiktas wins, we will likely be at least 5 points ahead of İstanbul Başakşehir before we meet them - which would be a huge advantage.

İstanbul Başakşehir (2nd) v Galatasaray (3rd)

There are only 4 points between them - Galatasaray is hoping to grab the second place whereas the home team is still chasing Besiktas.
It might become even more critical if Besiktas loses at Trabzon tomorrow (they will play on Monday).

Adanaspor (18th) - Rizespor (17th)

Last chance for both teams - anything besides a win will mean relegation.

Other critical games involving relegation battle:

Gaziantepspor v Alanyaspor
Kayserispor v Osmanlıspor
