Will the British matches be played?
At the moment it seems that there is nothing official except in Northern Ireland where the weekend fixtures are known to be postponed. The few matches that were scheduled for today have been cancelled.
As I write this I have just received a news alert that this weekend' fixtures in England have been cancelled, probably all major sporting fixtures will be.
It still seems likely though that the European club matches will proceed as planned next week, but there is now official confirmation of this. Our government is reluctant to make these decisions, so it will probably be left to the clubs/leagues to make their own, and I think they will decide to play next midweek.
Can a single club decide not to play its match in the Champions League?SimonB wrote: ↑Fri Sep 09, 2022 12:40 At the moment it seems that there is nothing official except in Northern Ireland where the weekend fixtures are known to be postponed. I suppose probably not, it would have to be collectively, but I don't see it happening anyway.EarlofBug wrote: ↑Fri Sep 09, 2022 12:55Can a single club decide not to play its match in the Champions League?SimonB wrote: ↑Fri Sep 09, 2022 12:40 At the moment it seems that there is nothing official except in Northern Ireland where the weekend fixtures are known to be postponed. Why would matches be cancelled?
The death of a 96year old person is not a real shock is it?

The British establishment and media have a uniquely weird reaction to everything related to the royal family. Way weirder than other countries with monarchies (Spain, Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Luxembourg).Witkop1983 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 09, 2022 17:31 Why would matches be cancelled?

I mean, when Pope John Paul II died, I'm sure they also cancelled the following matches and all similar events in both Italy and Poland. I think the weight of the situation is comparable to back then.

John Paul died on 2 april 2005, was buried on 8 april 2005.
In CL we had Liverpool-Juventus on 5 april and AC Milan - Inter on 6 april.
IN EL we had Austria Wien - Parma on 7 april
Polish clubs were already out of the competitions (it was the quarterfinals)

I can understand Premier League games being canceled. It's debatable, but I understand it's an important moment for the country and for the people.
It's absurd to expect to not play international games. If any club federation would decide to not play an international game I would expect to lose those games and be penalized some points. Keeping a silent moment is enough.
Postponement of an international game should happen only when tragedy with more impact happens. Something that can disrupt the normal functioning of society/civilization in the country. Earthquake / fire / war that would prevent from a physical point of view the safe travel of the teams.
Trying to postpone international games for this is just trying to impose the importance the monarchy in Great Britain across the whole of Europe. And no sorry the queen and king of Great Britain are just not that import for the rest of us.

Well, if a match would be on the day of the funeral (or just after the news of the death) I could live with a postponement of 1 day, just to make sure the 2 events are not at the same time.

I was only talking about domestic league matches. Nobody would think that international matches could be postponed, and they 100% will happen next week.Witkop1983 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 09, 2022 18:23 John Paul died on 2 april 2005, was buried on 8 april 2005.

I only found silly how some people have already started complaining to their broadcasting channel how they want a refund for missing a weekend of PL action
They are probably not unionists.OlliWender wrote: ↑Fri Sep 09, 2022 18:32 I was only talking about domestic league matches. Nobody would think that international matches could be postponed, and they 100% will happen next week.
