The last time each club played at the second level.

1978 Rosenborg

2006 Strømsgodset
2007 Molde
2008 Odd
2009 Haugesund

2012 Sarpsborg 08

2017 Bodø/Glimt
2018 Viking
2019 Sandefjord
2020 Lillestrøm
2020 Tromsø
2021 HamKam
2022 Brann
2023 Fredrikstad
2023 KFUM Oslo
2023 Kristiansund

Is there any other top 30 league in Europe where so many clubs have such a short run in the top league?

A pity, Vålerenga. Now, the only proper Oslo club in the Eliteserien is the one with no fandom and barely a stadium.

And finally Rosenborg's manager saga ends. Swede Alfred Johansson have been announced as the next Rosenborg manager. Johansson joins from the FC Copenhagen academy, where he's been very successful in the Youth League this season. 33 year old Johansson will be the youngest Rosenborg manager since Nils Arne Eggen took charge in 1971 as a 29 year old. Leading the club to its first double.

I must admit, my first thought when his name came up about a month ago. Was doubt over signing a manager with no experience from a first team what so ever. But at the same time I was very relieved that the club looked wider than they've done the previous three times they've looked for a manager since 2018. Johansson has been described as one of the most promissing manager talents in Scandinavia. And FC Copenhagen apparently looks at him as a future manager when Jacob Neestrup leaves the club some time in the future.

Overall I'm quite excited by this signing. Rosenborg have a rather young squad at the moment. And I think Johansson can really help their development in the next years. At a time where Rosenborg don't have the economic muscles of the past. Developing our own talents is a necessity.

I don't have to big expectations for next season though. There's a lot to fix in both the current squad, and the club itself before it can fight over the title again. To be within range of the medals would be seen on as a step forward.

Well...
2024 pretty much couldn't get a more shocking start. Tromsø manager Gaute Helstrup, steps down and joins Bodø/Glimt as an assistant to Kjetil Knutsen!

This is in my opinion a bigger shock than when Geir Bakke left Lillestrøm to take over Vålerenga last summer. Because Tromsø had just achieved success. And he now steps down to take an assistant role. The only rational though is that he's been promised to replace Knutsen. And Knutsen has decided to leave Bodø/Glimt. His contract expire after the season.

Defender Jostein Gundersen also joined Bodø/Glimt from Tromsø on a free transfer. But that has for some reason gotten in the shadows..

Truely shocking! As a TIL supporter this is nightmarish. Josten Gundersen has played for Tromsø since he was 7 years old. The fact that he was out of contract, but still demanded Bodø/Glimt pay Tromsø a transfer fee to sign with them, just shows how weird and special this deal is.

As for Gaute Helstrup he has been a thorn in Bodø/Glimts side the past few years. It has been obvious that Kjetil Knutsen has struggled against his tactics and has a lot of respect for him as a coach. But in order to think about buying him in as his assistant is completely bonkers. The only explanation is that Kjetil Knutsen is about to leave. (Where? Ajax?). As I see it, Gaute is the only choice I can see, besides from keeping Kjetil Knutsen, that could develop Bodø/Glimt further and maybe take them to the next big step, the Champios League.

For Tromsø this is very unexpected to put it mildly. However there has been talks around both Gaute and Jostein leaving at some point, so besides the manner of it all and that it is to Bodø, there has to be some plans of how to proceed, I think it is very likely that Gaute´s assistant, Jørgen Vik takes over. He is young and hasn´t had any major roles before, but even so he has been in the club for years now and has been a part of every step Gaute has taken. The biggest problem he will have to face is that almost the entire defense line is gone and he will have to rebuild it from scratch.

Smart move from Bodø. They are getting an excellent defender who is always ready to die for any tackle and then we will have to see if they will take to the ideas of "Gautiola-football" if Helstrup is about to take over the helm.

I have difficulties finding anything comparable to this insanity in football. It is as if Ange Postecoglou left Spurs to become Arteta´s assistant at Arsenal.

Usually these kind of things happen to dominant clubs like Bayern in Germany (with Borussia Dortmund as the main victim), Juve in Italy or Real/Barcelona in Spain. It's crazy that in a few years Bodo went from being nobodies to being able to do such things.

Now if they manage to reach the CL League Phase, the cash cow, they will cement themselves financially in Norway.

New season on the horizon. This weekend the Norwegian league of 2024 kicks off. The season has already startet with a few qualifying matches for the cup though.

The 2024 season of Eliteserien marks the return of Fredrikstad to the top league. They have 9 league titles to their name, only Rosenborg (26) has more. But it is 63 years since Fredrikstad last won the league.

KFUM Oslo is there for their first time ever. And they are the only Oslo-team. The main Oslo rivals Vålerenga and Lyn will be playing in a tier under KFUM. It is a bit like if all the big clubs of London were only playing the Championship while Leyton Orient would represent London in the Premier League:-)

This year the main title contenders are expected to be Bodø/Glimt and Molde. No surprise there having the past five seasons in mind. But there are some expectations that Brann might be involved in the title fight. There are always high expectations in Bergen, but now they have had a steady development for a long time and they have managed to keep their team intact from last season where they ended up as runner up behind Bodø/Glimt.

Transfer window is still open and a lot can happen in the next few days, but mostly the teams are well prepared for the season to start now.

Bookmakers are saying:
1. Bodø/Glimt 11/10
2. Molde FK 11/4
3. SK Brann 7/2
4. Viking 14
5. Rosenborg 20
---------------------
6. Lillestrøm 28
7. Sarpsborg08 28
8. Tromsø IL 100
9. Strømsgodset 200
10. Odd BK 200
11. Fredrikstad 300
12. Haugesund 500
13. Sandefjord 500
----------------------
14. Hamkam 500
----------------------
15. KFUM Oslo 1000
16. Kristiansund BK 1000

Eliteserien - Round 1
Odd - Haugesund 1-2
0-1 Bruno Leite 38'
1-1 Tony Miettinen 49'
1-2 Ismael Seone 90+1'

And the first match of the season is over. And it's a win for the visitors from Haugesund. However, overall the home side was more dangerous. And had deserved to at least take home a point.

Tomorrow the season finally starts for the rest of us. With the exception of KFUM Oslo who has to wait until Tuesday. Since they've been forced to use Vålerengas Intility Arena for the first two home matches. As their own KFUM Arena is still being upgraded to meet Eliteserien regulations. And since Vålerenga themselves start their season at home tomorrow, KFUM Oslo has to wait until Tuesday.

From a Rosenborg perspective the expectations for the season is rather low. While I support and believe in the path we've started on. The expectations of results over night is rather low. This season will mostly be about progression through the season. The pre season have been somewhat troublesome. The squad have been plagued with injuries and sickness. Especially in the striker position. 17 yo midfielder Sverre Nypan who pretty much was the only highlight last season, has been forced to play as a false 9 through most of the pre season matches. And it looks like he'll start as a false 9 vs Sandefjord tomorrow as well.
The result in the preseason matches haven't been especially good. However, I feel like we've seen some sort of progression in most matches. But results like Brann 0-2, Vålerenga 1-4 and Viking 0-5 shows that there's still a lot of work left.

Because of the troublesome pre season a lot of the squad has had, I fear Rosenborg will get a rather slow start to the season. If we're on the upper half after 10 matches, that should most likely be considered a good start to the season. Especially as we got Bodø/Glimt (H), Brann (A) and Molde (A) on matchday 5, 6 and 7. These three are the clear favorites ahead of the season. With Viking being an outsider for the top three positions. But behind those four, a lot could happen. And seeing as we now have five spots for Europe next season, a 5th place might be very valuable. But as stated, this season is mostly about progression for Rosenborg. But part of this progression should be to fight over that 5th place in the second half of the season.
