Atletico Madrid and Barcelona resume Mundial de Clubes FIFA 25 race

https://www.fifa.com/fifaplus/en/tourna ... d-cup-2025

Qualification places for the inaugural 32-team tournament could be decided in several confederations in the coming days.

Only one of heavyweight Spanish pair can claim a place in the USA next year

South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns could seal their spot on Saturday

Ulsan just one win away from becoming first Korean club to qualify

Atletico Madrid (ESP) and Barcelona (ESP) resume their battle to reach the inaugural Mundial de Clubes FIFA 25™ (FIFA Club World Cup 2025™) when they contest their respective UEFA Champions League quarter-final second legs on Tuesday, while spots in Asia and Africa could also be decided in the coming days.

Tuesday 16 April

Europe

Following their 2-1 first-leg win against Borussia Dortmund (GER), Atleti are well-placed to join city rivals Real Madrid (ESP) as Spain’s second representative via the rankings pathway. With just nine points left to play for (seven from matches, two by advancing to further rounds), Diego Simeone’s men are six points clear of Barcelona in the standings.

If Barcelona, who hold a 3-2 first-leg lead, are knocked out by Paris Saint-Germain (FRA), Atletico’s place would also be secured. If both go through, they will face each other in the final four with the second Spanish spot still on the line – either through the champions or rankings pathway.

Either would qualify as European champions, but it is impossible for both teams to reach the United States tournament.

If Atletico win the second leg against a Dortmund side who have already clinched their FIFA Club World Cup 2025 spot, there is only one way for Barcelona to deny their La Liga rivals a place in the inaugural 32-team competition via the rankings pathway: win their quarter-final second leg, defeat Atletico in both semi-final legs and lose the final in a penalty shoot-out.

If Atletico achieve a better second-leg result than their domestic rivals, Barcelona will no longer be able to overtake Atletico in the rankings and can only displace them at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 as 2023/24 European champions.

Winning a sixth European crown would clinch Barca a place at Atletico’s expense. If Barcelona win the second leg and Atleti are eliminated, Xavi Hernandez’s men would close to within three points of their compatriots in the rankings. To overhaul Atletico, however, Barcelona would still need to reach this season's UEFA Champions League final.

Asia

Two places remain up for grabs in Asia: one for the winners of the 2023/24 AFC Champions League, the other via the ranking pathway.

Al Ain (UAE) host Saudi four-time AFC Champions League winners Al Hilal in Tuesday's semi-final first leg. While Al Hilal's 2021 win in the competition means their FIFA Club World Cup 2025 place is already secure, a fifth continental crown this season would activate a second rankings slot and take Korean duo Ulsan HD (KOR) and Jeonbuk Motors (KOR) with them to the United States.

The picture is crystal clear for Al Ain – they must lift the AFC Champions League trophy to seal a place in the United States.

Wednesday 17 April

Europe

Arsenal's (ENG) only route to the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 passes through winning the UEFA Champions League for the first time. They travel to Munich on Wednesday where Bayern Munich (GER), who secured a 2-2 first-leg draw in London, have already guaranteed a spot in the global showpiece as Germany’s top-ranked team. If Bayern progress, they will earn Austrian neighbours FC Salzburg (AUT) a place in the US via the rankings pathway.

As the last two winners of the UEFA Champions League, both Manchester City (ENG) and Real Madrid, who play their second leg in England on Wednesday, have already secured their places at the FIFA Club World Cup.

Asia

Ulsan will secure a place in the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 if they win against Japanese side Yokohama F. Marinos (JPN) on Wednesday. In fact, two draws in their remaining games in the competition - or progressing to the final - would also see Ulsan claim the rankings pathway place.

If Ulsan and Al Hilal reach the final, Jeonbuk - who were knocked out by Ulsan in the quarter-finals - would be assured of a place via the rankings pathway.

Yokohama know only a first AFC Champions League title is enough for them to progress.

Saturday 20 April

Africa
The two teams still in contention for the one guaranteed spot available to an African team at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 via the rankings pathway meet in the CAF Champions League semi-finals as ES Tunis (TUN), with 90 points, host Mamelodi Sundowns (RSA), who have 98, in Saturday’s first leg.

With a maximum 12 points still available to non-champions, a Mamelodi first-leg win would guarantee their qualification for the global tournament next year as they would be 11 points ahead of their opponents with only nine still available.

A draw would leave ES Tunis still eight points back and needing to win the semi-final second leg and one of the two legs of the final to overtake Mamelodi. Should the Tunisians win both semi-final legs, they would overtake Mamelodi.

Both teams will qualify if Al Ahly (EGY), who have already qualified as the current African champions, eliminate TP Mazembe (COD) in the other semi-final as that will open two qualifying places via the rankings pathway. Only a TP Mazembe triumph in the competition overall can prevent ES Tunis and Mamelodi Sundowns from both punching their ticket for the United States.

Atleti is in, Barca is out. The last UEFA spot will go to Arsenal (if they win UCL) or Salzburg (if anyone other than Arsenal win UCL)

Atletico Madrid qualify for Mundial de Clubes FIFA 25

https://www.fifa.com/fifaplus/en/tourna ... d-cup-2025

Spanish side have booked their place at the inaugural 32-team tournament which takes place in the USA in 2025.

Barcelona’s defeat at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals means that Diego Simeone’s side are now assured of a place at the global tournament via the ranking pathway, despite their own exit from the European competition at the hands of Borussia Dortmund.

The new 32-team competition, which will take place in the United States during June and July 2025, features clubs from each of the six confederations, competing for the title of world champions.

With 12 spots open at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 for European teams, the winners of the UEFA Champions League over the last three seasons – Manchester City, Real Madrid and Chelsea – have already secured their places.

Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, Inter Milan, Porto, Benfica, Borussia Dortmund and Juventus have filled seven more of the berths via the ranking pathway for UEFA clubs, based on their Champions League performances over the past four seasons, including the current campaign.

The winners of the current edition of the UEFA Champions League, which concludes with the final in London on 1 June, will take one spot, with the next best ranked team on the qualification pathway - which is now certain to be Atletico Madrid - joining them in the US.

In the event of a club winning two or more editions of the confederation’s premier club competition during the 2021-2024 period, the ranking pathway will be used to grant access.

A cap of two clubs per country will be applied to the access list with an exception in cases where more than two clubs from the same country win the confederation’s premier club competition over the four-year period.

Given the teams remaining in the UEFA Champions League this season, and the sides who have already booked a place at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025, FC Salzburg of Austria will join the list of European qualifiers if any club other than Arsenal lifts the trophy this year.

In the last four seasons, Salzburg have been in the Champions League group stage every season, finishing bottom this season, 3rd twice and on the one occasion they finished 2nd they were thumped by Bayern in the last 16. So consistency in getting to the group stage, as a club outside the big nations (who have restrictions on qualifying numbers), and being mid table (in the future format), could be enough to get to the CWC. Of course, Arsenal could be their undoing this season, but that feels quite unlikely!

They finished with 40 points in the ranking table, only 1 point above Ajax, who have had similar results (R16 once and 3rd twice) in three seasons. But of course Ajax unexpectedly failed to qualify this season. Had they qualify, they would get 4 bonus GS points and overtook Salzburg, and be the potential team to qualify if Arsenal do not win CL.

Looking further ahead to next cycle 2025-2028 for the 2029 CWC, we know that likely 9 of the 12 spots would be filled by 2 each from the big 4 plus PSG. So assuming that no country would provide 3 or more different winners, that leaves a maximum of 3 spots to be competed among the other nations. Portugal is losing a direct spot in CL league stage, now with only 1 auto and 1 qualifying, and with Sporting being competitive with Benfica and Porto nowadays, we may see a case of three teams dividing the necessary number of points and only 1 able to qualify. For the Netherlands, Ajax are already at a disadvantage as they will not qualify next season, so we will see if PSV are consistent enough in the next four seasons. After that, perhaps Salzburg or Shakhtar Donetsk (who also qualified for all seasons 2021-2024 and finished with 35 points) are possible candidates. The likes of Celtic/Rangers of Galatasaray/Fenerbahce would possibly have to qualify for the CL league stage in all 4 seasons, and given the competitiveness of their domestic league, it may be difficult.

Ulsan book place at Mundial de Clubes FIFA 25

https://www.fifa.com/fifaplus/en/tourna ... d-cup-2025

South Korean outfit are the third AFC side to secure qualification to the inaugural 32-team tournament in the USA.

Ulsan’s AFC Champions League semi-final first leg victory over Yokohama F.Marinos means that they are now assured of a place at the tournament via the ranking pathway at least, having moved above South Korean rivals Jeonbuk Motors in the qualification standings.

The new 32-team competition, which will take place in the United States during June and July 2025, features clubs from each of the six confederations, competing for the title of world champions.

With four spots open at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 for Asian teams, the winners of the AFC Champions League over the past two seasons – Al Hilal of Saudi Arabia and Japan’s Urawa Red Diamonds – have already secured their places.

The winners of the current edition of the AFC Champions League, which concludes with the two-legged final on 11 and 25 May 2024, will take one spot with one further berth open for the best ranked team on the qualification pathway to join them in the US.

Ulsan can now not be caught by any of their rivals in the ranking pathway, but should they or Al Hilal lift the AFC Champions League trophy this season, then a ranking berth will open up again, with Jeonbuk the only team in contention to secure that.

FC Salzburg heading to Mundial de Clubes FIFA 25

https://www.fifa.com/fifaplus/en/tourna ... d-cup-2025

Austrian outfit will compete at the inaugural 32-team tournament which takes place in the USA in 2025, completing the list of European qualifiers.

Arsenal’s defeat at the hands of Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals means that the Austrian Bundesliga side are now assured of a place at the global tournament via the ranking pathway.

The new 32-team competition, which will take place in the United States during June and July 2025, features clubs from each of the six confederations, competing for the title of world champions.

With 12 spots at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 for European teams, the winners of the UEFA Champions League over the last three seasons – Manchester City, Real Madrid and Chelsea – have already secured their places.

Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, Inter Milan, Porto, Benfica, Borussia Dortmund, Juventus and Atletico Madrid have filled eight more of the berths via the ranking pathway for UEFA clubs, based on their Champions League performances over the past four seasons, including the current campaign.

And as the winners of the current edition of the UEFA Champions League, which concludes with the final in London on 1 June, are certain to be one of the teams listed above, then the next best eligible ranked team on the qualification pathway - FC Salbzurg - have booked their ticket to the US following Arsenal's elimination.

Pursuit of Mundial de Clubes 25™ place heats up for Concacaf trio

https://www.fifa.com/fifaplus/en/tourna ... -world-cup

Club America, Pachuca and Colombus Crew all hoping to join the list of teams to have qualified for the inaugural tournament in the USA.

Columbus Crew and Mexican duo Club America and Pachuca can still qualify

All three feature in Concacaf Champions Cup semi-final first legs this week

Final Asian and African qualifiers could be decided in coming days

Columbus Crew (USA) and Mexican duo Club America (MEX) and Pachuca (MEX) continue their quests to qualify for the inaugural Mundial de Clubes 25™ (FIFA Club World Cup 2025™) this week as they head into their Concacaf Champions Cup semi-final first legs, while the final qualifiers from Asia and Africa could be decided.

Concacaf
Monterrey (MEX) make up the final four in this season’s continental competition, but by virtue of being 2021 champions, they have already secured their place at next year’s 32-team tournament in the United States.

To join them, the equation for the other three semi-finalists is simple, though far from easy: they have to win the Concacaf Champions Cup this season.

Given there is a two clubs per country limit, and that Monterrey and Club Leon (MEX) have already qualified as champions, there is no opportunity for America or Pachuca to qualify via the ranking pathway. The country limit does not apply to continental champions, however, so either of the pair will qualify if they lift the trophy this season, which adds extra spice to Tuesday’s first leg at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.

The same goes for Columbus Crew, even if fellow MLS outfit Seattle Sounders (USA) are the only American club already assured of their place. The Crew’s difficulty comes in that they cannot make up the points gap in the ranking pathway to another MLS side, Philadelphia Union (USA), who are the highest-ranked non-Mexican team.

With only four places available to Concacaf teams, the Crew need to get past Monterrey and lift the 2024 Concacaf Champions Cup. For the Union to qualify, they need Monterrey, who travel to Columbus for Wednesday’s first leg, to knock the Crew out and then go on to win a sixth continental crown. That will open a FIFA Club World Cup 2025 qualifying place via the ranking pathway which only the Union can claim.

AFC

Al Ain (UAE) have put themselves in a strong position to progress to the AFC Champions League final and kept their hopes of reaching the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 on the boil with a 4-2 semi-final first-leg win over Al Hilal (KSA).

The duo meet again in Riyadh for the second leg on Tuesday with Al Ain knowing they need to go through and then win the continental title for only the second time in their club’s history to qualify for the FIFA Club World Cup 2025.

As 2021 Asian champions, Al Hilal already have their ticket for the USA. If they win a fifth title this year, they would open up a second qualifying spot from the ranking pathway: Jeonbuk Motors (KOR) would be the happy beneficiaries.

Now ahead of Jeonbuk Motors in the ranking are the team that knocked them out of this season’s AFC Champions League in the quarter-finals, fellow Korean outfit Ulsan HD (KOR). They go into Wednesday’s semi-final second leg against Yokohama F. Marinos (JPN) 1-0 up on aggregate. That triumph guaranteed them a place via the ranking pathway at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 whatever happens in the rest of the competition.

Yokohama can still join them at the tournament, but need to become Asian champions for the first time in the club’s history to do so. If Yokohama and Al Ain reach the final, Jeonbuk would be eliminated, as either of the finalists would take the final FIFA Club World Cup 2025 qualifying place by winning the competition. Should Ulsan and Al Hilal be the final line-up, as they already have their FIFA Club World Cup 2025 places secured, Jeonbuk would be through too.

CAF

ES Tunis (TUN) have closed the gap on CAF Champions League semi-final opponents Mamelodi Sundowns FC (RSA) to five points in the ranking pathway after a 1-0 win at home to the South Africans in Saturday’s first leg. Should the Tunisians win Friday’s second leg too, they would overtake Mamelodi and secure the one guaranteed spot available to an African team at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 via the rankings.

Both teams will qualify for the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 regardless of the result of the second leg if Al Ahly SC (EGY), who have already qualified as the current African champions, eliminate TP Mazembe (COD) in the other semi-final. That would open two qualifying places via the ranking pathway.

The pair head into Friday’s second leg all square after Saturday’s first leg in Lubumbashi ended goalless. TP Mazembe need to win the competition to qualify and deny the loser of the ES Tunis - Mamelodi Sundowns tie a place in the USA next year.
