Question: :?: :grin1:
So, if Internazionale, AC Milan, Juventus, Bologna and AS Roma finish in the top 5 in Serie A, and Atalanta wins the Europa League, then Italy would have 6 clubs qualified for the next CLGS. It is this correct? :?:

With the current rules, I think up to 7 teams could qualify (very difficult of course), lets say Napoli or Lazio had gone all the way to win UCL while being outside Top5 in Serie A, in addition to your case.

Three possible scenarios, with 9 or more Italian teams in 24/25 European Competitions, although very difficult:

Scenario A: 9 teams (5 CL + 3 EL + 1 ECL) if Italy in the first two spots 23/24, Fiorentina win ECL, do not win Coppa Italia and finish 9th or below in Serie A.
Scenario B: 9 teams (6 CL + 2 EL + 1 ECL) as scenario A, but Atalanta win the EL too - see below details
Scenario C: 10 teams (6 CL + 3 EL + 1 ECL) as Scenario B, but Atalanta finish 9th, behind Lazio, Napoli and Torino

Scenario B:
1. INTER >> CL
2. Milan >> CL
3. Juventus (Cup Winner) >> CL
4. Bologna >> CL
5. Roma >> CL
6. Atalanta (EL winner) >> CL as EL TH
7. Lazio >> EL
8. Napoli >> ECL
9. Torino
10. Fiorentina (ECL winner) >> EL as ECL TH

Scenario C:
1. INTER >> CL
2. Milan >> CL
3. Juventus (Cup Winner) >> CL
4. Bologna >> CL
5. Roma >> CL
6. Lazio >> EL
7. Napoli >> EL
8. Torino >> ECL
9. Atalanta (EL winner) >> CL as EL TH
10. Fiorentina (ECL winner) >> EL as ECL TH

Napoli lost two more points and the possibility to seriously re-enter the CL race, at least for now.
Bologna with the second 0-0 in a row will hope that Roma and Atalanta show signs of tiredness due to European games.
The relegation race is still quite difficult to predict, i hope Frosinone survive.

in Serie B Como made a good step to secure the automatic promotion, also thanks to Cremonese's poor form.

On an unrelated note, i'm already "suffering" due to the warm temperatures (28°C now) and it's only mid-April :fingal:

Udinese-Roma suspended in 71'. Ndika, Roma player, is seriously injured, he crashed on the ground. Maybe an heart attack.

Latest report is that a heart attack has been dismissed as the cause and that his life is not in danger.

Yes, the players in the Sassuolo-Milan game - a pulsating 3-3 draw - had a drinks break in both halves because of the heat.

Not only Roma, Atalanta and Fiorentina celebrate tonight, but also Bologna must be happy, because both direct opponents will have two extra games. In the last weekend Roma and Atalanta already showed that it's hard to play every three days (Atalanta - Verona 2-2, Udinese - Roma 1-1 when the game was suspended).

Atalanta - Roma will be played 3/4 days after the second leg of the EL semifinals.

matt wrote: Mon Mar 18, 2024 19:39 There is no room available to play Atalanta - Fiorentina in April, because there is a double-leg semifinal among them in the Italian Cup, and also because both teams are still in European Cups.
If both teams are eliminated in the next EL/ECL round the match can be played in the first mid-week of May.

If at least one goes through there's no date available until May 22, after matchday 37, because on May 15 there's the Italian cup final with either Fiorentina or Atalanta.

The most extreme (but unlikely) scenario is Atalanta in the EL final: in that case the game Atalanta - Fiorentina can be played only after the end of the league!

So, to resume, the most probable scenario is to play the game on May 22, between matchday 37 and matchday 38.
Has this an effect on the regularity of the whole CL race? Yes, for sure.

This is an example of how fucked-up is the current schedule of club football, and how much International breaks are complicating it, because without the coming (mostly pointless) break there would the proper space in the calendar to play this game.
Both Atalanta and Fiorentina advanced. It's getting harder to find a date to play this game before the end of the league.
I wonder if they could think to postpone matchday 38 and play Atalanta - Fiorentina on May 26, after matchday 37.
The problem is that it's hard to make a decision before the European semifinals of Atalanta and Fiorentina.
Funny (ridicolous) situation.
In my opinion the most sensibile decision is to play Atalanta - Fiorentina on May 15th and postpone the Italian Cup final to the mid-week of the EL final (if Fiorentina advance to the Coppa Italia final) or the mid-week of the ECL final (if Atalanta advance to the Italian cup final).

Serie A

Today, Monday, 18:30
AS Roma - Bologna
This is a very important match in the CL spots race.

Today, Monday, 20:45
AC Milan - Internazionale
It is first vs. second, and it is the Derby della Madonnina.

Monza hit the inside of the post with the last kick of the game in their 2-1 home defeat by Atalanta yesterday!

Atalanta will be relieved that they didn't surrender a two goal lead for the second time in a week!

Daniel Maldini scored the goal in 89' and hit the inside of the post in 90+5'. He subbed in 65', so played only 20'. Not bad for Paolo's son.

AS Roma - Bologna just started.

On other news, Fabio Cannavaro is the new coach of Udinese.
