Interesting to see Celta up to #12. They didn't make it beyond 0-0 at home in the semis of the Copa against Alavés in a pouring rain, but I think they still have to be (slight) favorites to qualify for the Final.

All very interesting as always, and :applause: :applause: :applause: great job, Monsieur Lyonnais :!:

according to Bert's ranking, 14 out of 16 top-16 ranked teams reached round of 16 in 2017

exceptions are: Leicester and Monaco instead of Chelsea and Schalke

mmmmmmmm...year after year, the most important club's tournament in the world is more and more predictable

Which sport is less predictable ?

Table tennis gold medal at the olympiques ?
A grand slam final in tennis ?
A biathlon finish ?
100m sprints ?
Handball world chamipon ?
Ice hockey ?
Maybe WSOP :D

Whatever you take, in 95% a favourite will win any serious sports event. Otherwise, he wouldn't be favourite.

So I'm glad we have 9 different CL-champions in this century and several team in the quarters who could make it 10.

Well, OK, I won't argue with you here, but when I was a lad  , I saw Ajax win the European Cup three years running, and then Bayern do the same thing over the very next three-year period. The pendulum swings, the wheel of fortune turns . . . And we have yet to have a CL winner repeat :!:

So I'm glad we have 9 different CL-champions in this century and several team in the quarters who could make it 10.

US pro sports based on salary cap and draft, like NFL, are a good example of unpredictable challenge: from 2002 to 2011 (10 years), 10 different teams reached the final from one of the two conferences.

9 different CL winners in almost 20 years is just a marginal issue: I'm more oriented to analyse the recent trend (this decade, so from 2011): in last 6 CL editions, this was the spot distribution of the semi-finalists:

- REAL 6 times
- BARCA 4
- ATLETICO 2

- BAYERN 5
- BORUSSIA 1
- SCHALKE 1

- CHELSEA 2
- UNITED 1
- CITY 1

- JUVENTUS

Just 10 teams overall.

23 out of 24 came from the 3 top countries.

Real, Barca and Bayern almost every year.

And so on...

P.S. what is WSOP?!?! :?

The fact that no team has won CL twice in a row is simply due to the fact that there are 4 or 5 contenters (almost the same ones ) every year, so it's difficult to predict who will win it from semi-finals. But it's so easy to predict which teams will reach that semi-finals. :)

Once we had Bayern dinasty, Ajax dinasty and so on...but we saw S.Etienne, Malmoe, Bruges, Amburgo, Leeds, Steaua, Panathinaikos, Forest, Rome, PSV in final (or even winners) as well! Who could ever predict a double Nott. Forest triumph?! Or a sweedish team in final? Or Amburgo's upset over Juventus?

That was a consequence of a 1 team per country limitation.

Without Atlético Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Arsenal, Manchester City, Sevilla, FC Porto, Napoli, Bayer Leverkusen, Tottenham, Lyon, Sporting, Borussia Monchengladbach, Monaco and Rostov (I think I haven’t missed anyone, but please correct me if I’m wrong), you open room for the likes of Club Brugge, PSV, Dynamo Kiev, etc. to shine, reach quarter finals and perhaps even further twice or thrice per decade, and have the (wrong) perception that they’re actually among, or close to, Europe’s finest teams.

On the other hand, these teams would be in the EL instead, and there it would be much harder for the likes of Anderlecht, Ajax, Steaua, etc. to reach EL quarter finals and perhaps even further.

I prefer the CL era, although I confess that in the CL era, I preferred the 2000-2008 period, instead of the current 2009-2017 “Visca el Barça!” period. :sigh:

(In one example, the time when Cristiano Ronaldo couldn’t score a single goal in over 3 years compared to nowadays where he and Frodo and the rest of the fake heroes seem to score one per game)

You're basically right, the trend gets concerning. Not even the teams with the biggest money like Paris and City can compete with the big 4 over the last 5 years. So good luck Leicester, Monaco, Dortmund, Juventus. On a good day they are able to beat everybody.
