European ranking

Post by Lyonnais »

This is the first monthly update of the Euopean ranking I have been doing for some few years.
The principle is easy; teams collect points depending on the value of their opponents (based on an their ajusted* UEFA Team coefficient)
* no country points + degressive points

It doesn't have that much value, but i enjoy doing this and that's the most important.

At that stage, the Russian teams have an advantage as they already have played around 2/3 of their season and thus had more chances to collect points.

I'll make a monthly update.

I have also some idea like you. It's necessary to different between CL and UEFA Cup. But what will happened, if for example Zurich had win against Milan? Was it correct to give minimum of points, just because it is start round of UEFA?

I want to present my system! It is the next progress:

P*(x/100) where

P - points in game.
x - international club coefficient of opponent
100 - norm (just to don't have big numbers).

So the points for uefa ranking are depended from uefa coefficient of opponent, not from level of tournament!

I make some examples:

Ac Milan (119.934) vs Zurich (16.993)

In case of Milan victory he has 0.338 points addition to UEFA ranking.
In case of draw Milan add 0.169 and Zurich 1.199 points (it is ok, because draw show only that both teams are equal, so different between rankings will be lesser)
In case of victory of Zurich swiss club has 2.398 points (so much, because he defeat big club).

Compare with another example. Last year CL 1/8

Porto (81.176) vs Schalke (67.078).

In the case of draw, Porto become 0.678 point and Schalke 0.811. But what I want to say - for example Schalke get much point for draw against Porto then Milan for victory against Zurich. And this is exactly the point, because different between Porto and Schalke is much lesser then between Milan and Zurich, so it was complicated for Schalke to make draw.

What you think about this system? :)

yes, that's exactly the pointi f you want to assess a performance.

Afterwards, there are 100 different methods to do it and your calculation is fine no problem. It's pretty like the ELO ystem, isn't it?

Tottenham 5th, neither Chelsea nor ManU in the list... I must say that makes me believe your calculation puts a little much weight into the 2 wins vs Liverpool...

Actually I think Bayern is second and Lyon is first right now. The tie breaker is the direct encounter, that is a 1-1 at Munich so Lyon should be first on away goals. ;)

yes - objection agreed

but it still is an early ranking in the season, so a big win is overweighted (even more if 2 obviously). In the next few months, it will be much less significant - by experience, you need roughly 1000 pts to finish in the top 10.

This said:
- the weight of the big 4 is roughly the same (it follows the UEFA ranking)
- Tottenham is the only team which have defeated Liverpool this season
- ManU is 11th just 2 pts behind Fulham and the truth is that they have not defeated a big name so far really (Celtic is the most prestigious)
- even worse for Chelsea (well, Roma, not bad), but Chelsea had more opportunities, especially in the Premier League but have not succeeded.
I would however surprised if those 2 teams didn't finish in the top 10 at the end of the season.

I'm mystified how a team with 5 league losses before Christmas can be ranked the best in Europe! :)

I thought a direct encounter is counted when both matches were played. The team playing first leg not at home would have an advantage. So, theoretically Lyon is leader, but Bayern is it because of the goal difference. WHo cares anyway ^^
