UEFA Youth League 2016/17

Post by Lorric »

Here we go:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2016–17 ... uth_League

That's how the competition is shaping up this year. The top 35 countries are in. Spain could have six entries. Those on the outside can root for the following senior sides to qualify for the CL: Manchester City, Roma, Porto, Ajax, Anderlecht, PAOK, Sparta Prague, Red Bull Salzburg, Dinamo Zagreb, APOEL, Legia, Celtic, Rosenborg, Sheriff. A lot of teams and a lot of high seeded teams. And not all teams are known yet.

The youth teams for England, Manchester City completely dominated domestically this year and could be our team to watch. Chelsea though will be going for their third straight title, and finished third in England. They dominated the South section but came up short in the final round. Leicester finished 11th and Arsenal finished 13th.

EDIT: Can anyone make that link work properly?

Chelsea? Do they have a ticket?
I guess we are quite sure to have a new champion.

Oops! Damn, no place for the defending champ. I just assumed they would be there. I don't like that at all. Also forgot Tottenham, they finished 14th this year.

As long as teams can qualify by results of their senior teams, this competition can't be taken serious.

It should just be the best youth teams in the national youth league that should qualify.

The top national youth teams do qualify, before that I didn't take it seriously. But it would be much better if it was exclusively the best youth teams, with eventually coefficients from the UEFA Youth League deciding the places and seedings.

The door is also closed to many countries' champions. I don't like that.

I agree, you got a solid point. And would probally be better for team also (Midtjylland)

But just in order not to agree too much.

- Youth League need attention, and Manchester Uniteds youth team will just gather more attention and branding then Middlesbrough although they might have a better youth team.

- Not sure how it is in other countries, but in Denmark the CL path are televised, and the domestic path isn't, even though there was a Danish team participated. :? Hopefully time will change this.

- Youth League was made as a reaction from the NextGen Series with invited teams only.
Qualiyfing by senior teams in one step in right direction,
adding domestic champion-path another step.
Just one more step needed to make them play on equal terms. Maybe Group stage for domestic path?

Now only the youth champions left in Switzerland (Grasshopper U18-Zürich), Belarus and Georgia in domestic path

And obviously also the 10 teams depending on their senior teams in CL Q are yet to be decided.

14 teams who are qualified to domestic path got the chance to move to CL-path, again depending on the senior teams.
Man. City, Roma, Porto, Ajax, Anderlect, PAOK, Sparta Prague, Red Bull Salzburg, Dinamo Zagreb, APOEL, Legia Warsaw, Celtic, Rosenborg, Sheriff Tiraspol

If at least 3 of those will, among others Liechenstein will get a spot. But do they have a valid youth championsship?
36 Iceland
37 Bosnia and Herzegovina
38 Liechtenstein
39 Republic of Macedonia
40 Republic of Ireland

Just took a look at the clubs qualified for the domestic path, who still can go to the CL-path.
9 out of 20 teams in CL PO are also youth champs...
Dortmund, PSG and Dynamo Kyiv already have qualified for domestic path, but have been moved due to the senior performances.

2 matches are sure to deliver one, which will pass one a ticket to Liechtenstein and Macedonia for domestic-path

Dinamo Zagreb Croatia 1–1 Austria Red Bull Salzburg
Porto Portugal 1–1 Italy Roma

Another 5 with a possibility.

Celtic Scotland 5–2 Israel Hapoel Be'er Sheva
Copenhagen Denmark 1–0 Cyprus APOEL
Dundalk Republic of Ireland 0–2 Poland Legia Warsaw
Steaua București Romania 0–5 England Manchester City
Ajax Netherlands 1–1 Russia Rostov

Which means, quite a good chance Republic of Ireland will get a ticket as well. I dunno who is the youth champs. of Ireland, but maybe their youngsters are sure to play Youth League no matter?

(Montenegro and Albania are next countries to get a ticket)

Am I correct in assuming the Republic of Ireland champions (Cork City) are now in this?

Certainly if Man City squeeze through anyway.

Yes they are :)

Because yesterday
Porto, Celtic and Legia transfered from domestic to CL GS, which leaves room for
Bosnia and Herzegovina, Liechtenstein and Macedonia

Now Ireland is next in line to get a ticket, and at least one of the bold teams, will win tomorrow and thereby give the domestic-ticket to the Irish.

Dinamo Zagreb Croatia 1–1 Austria Red Bull Salzburg
Copenhagen Denmark 1–0 Cyprus APOEL
Steaua București Romania 0–5 England Manchester City
Ajax Netherlands 1–1 Russia Rostov

The Clubs participating in the CL GS will have a team here also. (CL-path)

And if APOEL, Man. City and Ajax wins tonight, even Luxembourg (country #43) will get a ticket for Domestic path.
