You’re forgetting the players on loan: Martins Indi, Reyes, Ricardo Pereira, Aboubakar… even Marega.
FC Porto can get 30-40M€ from these players.

And getting rid of Depoitre will be almost impossible in January. He already played for two clubs this season, Gent and Porto; he can’t play for a third. Perhaps the only option beside him staying is loaning him back to Gent. Would they want him back?

Yeah, Martins Indi and Aboubakar will be bought by Stoke and Besiktas respectively, but they'll probably only activate the option to buy later. I don't know if Espanyol have an option to buy Reyes. Ricardo Pereira should return to Porto (I hope so).

About Depoitre, good point.

Sporting's nightmare continues. After the elimination from Europe, the loss at the Lisbon derby, the loss of their appeal against Doyen, now they lose at home against Braga. This leaves them 4th behind Braga, 8 points below Benfica and level with Vitória de Guimarães! Never have Sporting been so far from the top at this point of the season and then went on to win the league. So, time to focus on the cups? Braga conquered the 3rd place right after firing Peseiro, and could be a strong contender to stay there.

Benfica won a tough game in the Amoreira. A penalty converted by Jiménez was enough for the 3 points.

FC Porto had to deal with a tough Chaves team. Chaves only lost 3 games this season, against Benfica, Braga and now against FC Porto, which says a lot about this team. They also held Porto at home for 120 minutes in the Cup to then win on penalties. Chaves scored with a lucky deflection, but despite being fortunate they played well enough to deserve that goal. Porto's reaction was fantastic, though, and despite a couple of referee mistakes that seemed like they could be key moments in the season (clean goal disallowed and penalty not given), FC Porto still managed to turn it around and get 3 very important points. 5th win in a row for FC Porto, best streak of the season.

Guimarães won the Vitória clássico and caught Sporting! They're closer to 3rd than to 6th, amazing!

Rio Ave continue on a roll, 4 wins in 4 games after hiring coach Luís Castro! They're comfortable in 6th and are favourites to win the race to that (likely) EL spot. Next game is at the Luz, can they surprise Benfica?

In the relegation struggle, Tondela lost a great opportunity to get 3 points at home against Boavista, and remain last. Feirense continue their streak of losses, Moreirense and Nacional didn't do better. It's seems the fight will be between these 4 (and maybe Boavista), Feirense and Tondela are the favourites to go down, though I'd prefer seeing Moreirense going down and Feirense having a 2nd season.

After a 100% winning run since being hired by Rio Ave, Luís Castro finally lost. But losing against Benfica away won't hurt their hopes too much, so far only Vitória de Setúbal came out of there with a point. Their rivals got a little closer, but if Rio Ave resume their good form, they'll remain favourites for 6th. Benfica got a very important win against a threatening opponent. Pizzi, who has been a key player this season, saw his 5th yellow card. Benfica's next game is at Paços de Ferreira for the League Cup, but yellow card suspensions aren't transferrable to that competition. Red card suspensions, on the other hand, are, so Pizzi purposedly got a 2nd yellow card and therefore he'll miss the league cup game, his yellow card count in the league remains at 4, and he'll be able to play the very important league game in Guimarães. Just goes to show how much Benfica respect that game against a Vitória side that are doing a very good season, but more on that later.

Braga, with their new coach Jorge Simão making his debut, beat troubled Moreirense at home with 2 goals by their 2 centre backs. The game was tougher than expected, but in the end they conquered the very important 3 points to remain in the top 3.

Sporting were the last of the big 4 to play, and having seen the other 3 win they were under considerable pressure. It seemed they were about to drop 2 crucial points and be left in an even worse situation, but a very late goal by the dutchman Bas Dost kept hopes (at least for 2nd) alive.

Vitória de Guimarães played even later, in a tough visit to Arouca, and won yet again! They remain level with Sporting, 2 points away from Braga and a CLPO spot, 4 points away from FC Porto and direct CL spot. This team and their coach Pedro Martins deserve a word. Pedro Martins must be, right now, ripe for a jump to a bigger club (as in, if one of the big 3 were to need a new coach, I'd expect Pedro Martins to be one of the favourites for the job). He has done well everywhere he worked, first Marítimo, than Rio Ave, now Vitória. It's still unlikely Vitória will be able to keep up with the top 4, but it's already surprising they're still in the mix as we enter 2017!

Back to the race for 6th, Chaves took advantage of Rio Ave and Marítmo's visits to Benfica and FC Porto respectively to reclaim the 7th place and put themselves just one point behind Rio Ave by beating Estoril Praia. Chaves are another team that deserve a lot of praise, just promoted, only 3 teams managed to beat them and they were Benfica, Braga and FC Porto (and only Benfica in Chaves). I've been expecting them to drop in form as "just promoted excitement" fades away, but they keep hanging on. I'm finally ready to take them seriously in the race for 6th... or would be if they hadn't just lost their coach to Braga. The new coach started promisingly, though: gave Porto a tough game at the Dragão and now beat Estoril. I still think Marítimo, coached by another man I admire (Daniel Ramos, who brought my team Famalicão back up) are Rio Ave's main threat, but Chaves may very well play a big role in this race.

In the relegation struggle, Tondela got a beating in Setúbal and remain rock bottom. Feirense got a very important win at home against Paços de Ferreira. In their current run of very difficult games, this was a rare winnable one and they didn't fail, they're now 3 points ahead of 16th, well done, maybe it's because I said earlier I'd like them to survive and have a 2nd season. Moreirense, as mentioned earlier, lost in Braga, but maybe deserved more, and it's not in Braga they're supposed to get points from anyway. Nacional... oh my, is it fair for me to keep beating them down? It is actually, They just lost at home against Boavista, a team they could have dragged down to this fight. Instead, Boavista distance themselves from these troubles, and Nacional bury themselves deeper. Manuel Machado has to be fired! I'm sorry, but it has to be said, there's no other way. I'm actually known to defend coaches and have more than once in this forum described sackings as "harsh". But this is getting embarrassing! Again, Manuel Machado has a past of success at Nacional, and deserves more tolerance than usual for that. But in this last spell, the results were already disappointing before this season! And if in the last few seasons we could say that maybe Nacional's squad wasn't as strong as in previous years, and the president correctly highlighted it to defent Manuel Machado claiming they didn't build a good enough squad to fight for the EL, no excuse will fly anymore! Their squad is actually good enough, Nacional are where Chaves were expected to be and vice-versa! They're at serious risk of being relegated, it's a 4-team fight right now after this result, and that's unnaceptable for a team like Nacional! There's a transfer window coming up, they're out of the League Cup (and the Cup, even those were disappointing) so their next game is only on January the 8th (they host Braga), they should be changing coaches NOW!

Table:

1. Benfica 38

Inevitable: Manuel Machado and Nacional parted ways. Curious to see who Nacional will hire.

Pedrag Jokanovic is the chosen one. Lol, I was going to write Nacional's president tend to go back to coaches that already worked there, but thought "Caixinha wouldn't come back and there's no way they'll hire Jokanovic again". I was wrong. Jokanovic had a few short spells at the club in the past, he was never bad nor very impressive. Not sure he's what Nacional need right now.

Benfica won the big game of the round, and saw FC Porto drop a couple of points, so it's another step towards the title. The game in Guimarães could easily have ended differently, the most clinical team won, while FC Porto had a strong first half where they could have scored several goals, but didn't score any. It's the story of this season, sometimes, this is the deciding factor in deciding champions.

Braga dropped a couple of points against a Nacional side looking to resurect with a new coach, and Sporting caught them by beating Feirense.

In the race for 6th, direct encounter between Rio Ave and Chaves ended in a draw. Even though they lost their coach to Braga, Chaves keep flying high! Marítimo took advantage with an away win in Estoril. Interesting race!

At the bottom, it was Moreirense´s turn to get very important 3 points. Nacional picked one up against one of the big 4, while Feirense wasn't expecting much in Alvalade, so it was a nightmare round for Tondela who lost at home against Arouca. As a result, Petit left, Pepa (who started the season at Moreirense) is the new coach.

League Cup

We've found the teams that'll go to the Algarve for the Final Four! For one reason or another, I've always been unavailable to make the group stage updates, so here are all the GS results:

Group A

Varzim (II) 1-0 Vit. Setúbal
1-0 Jeferson Santos 90+3'
Att: 682

Sporting 1-0 Arouca
1-0 Alan Ruiz 44'
Att: 10.698

Vit. Setúbal 1-0 Arouca
1-0 Vasco Costa 23'
Att: 1.641

Sporting 1-0 Varzim (II)
1-0 Gelson Martins 19'
Att: 24.752

Arouca 3-0 Varzim (II)
1-0 Marlon de Jesús 4'
2-0 Kuca 79'
3-0 Rafael Crivellaro 90'
Att: 410

Vit. Setúbal 2-1 Sporting
1-0 Frederico Venâncio 19'
1-1 Elias 79'
2-1 Edinho (pen.) 90+4'
Att: 4.231

Table:
1. Vit. Setúbal 6
2. Sporting 6
3. Arouca 3
4. Varzim (II) 3

It was looking like Sporting would qualify easily, but Vitória de Setúbal had a surprise planned. The sadinos actually had a horrible start, losing against 2nd tier Varzim, but a win over Arouca gave them hope. Sporting only needed a draw in Setúbal, and they had it until an 11th hour penalty gave Edinho the change to take Vitória to the Algarve and he didn't miss. Sporting decided to be childish and took revenge by recalling Gauld and Geraldes who were in Setúbal on loan. André Geraldes was promptly loaned to Chaves and Gauld may follow him, proving it was nothing more than sore losing.

Group B

FC Porto 0-0 Belenenses
Att: 14.228

Feirense 1-2 Moreirense
0-1 Ença Fati 22'
0-2 Emmanuel Boateng 45+2'
1-2 Higor Platiny 49'
Att: 1.175

Moreirense 3-3 Belenenses
1-0 Roberto 38'
1-1 Roberto (o.g.) 65'
1-2 André Sousa 70'
1-3 Miguel Rosa 74'
2-3 Cauê (pen.) 75'
3-3 Roberto 84'
Att: 587

FC Porto 1-1 Feirense
1-0 Iván Marcano 49'
1-1 Flávio Ramos 74'
Att: 41.305

Belenenses 2-2 Feirense
0-1 Fabinho 12'
1-1 Tiago Caeiro 64'
2-1 Miguel Rosa 86'
2-2 Tasos Karamanos 90+5'
Att: 1.132

Moreirense 1-0 FC Porto
1-0 Francisco Geraldes 49'
Att: 2.534

Table:
1. Moreirense 7
2. Belenenses 3
3. Feirense 2
4. FC Porto 2

FC Porto historically never cared about the League Cup, until last season president Pinto da Costa said he'd like to win it. Both last season and this, Porto seemed to take the competition a little more seriously and results actually got worse. Despite the 2 draws, they went into the last game with every chance of qualifying, both the dragons and Belenenses needed to win, with Porto qualifying if they won by a better result than the Restelo Blues. But Moreirense had other plans and defended their top place by beating Porto.

Group C

Sp. Covilhã (II) 1-1 Marítimo
1-0 Mike Moura 19'
1-1 Donald Djoussé 44'
Att: 668

Braga 1-2 Rio Ave
1-0 Rui Fonte 10'
1-1 Roderick Miranda (pen.) 19'
1-2 Héldon 43'
Att: 6.967

Braga 4-0 Sp. Covilhã (II)
1-0 Ricardo Horta 26'
2-0 Rui Fonte 54'
3-0 Rodrigo Pinho 65'
4-0 Ricardo Horta 80'
Att: 3.464

Marítimo 1-0 Rio Ave
1-0 Dyego Sousa 89'
Att: 5.834

Marítimo 0-1 Braga
0-1 Emiliano Velázquez 90+4'
Att: 9.812

Rio Ave 2-0 Sp. Covilhã (II)
1-0 Gil Dias 4'
2-0 Gil Dias 65'
Att: 1.251

Table:
1. Braga 6
2. Rio Ave 6
3. Marítimo 4
4. Sp. Covilhã 1

Another team qualifying after a horrible start, and more late drama! With RIo Ave winning in Braga and Marítimo dropping points in the mountains, the Vila do Conde team seemed to be huge favourites. The 2nd matchday saw Braga take revenge on Sporting da Covilhã, who had knocked them out of the cup, and Marítimo climb to the top by beating Rio Ave. The final showdown was set, with 3 teams able to qualify. Rio Ave won, but not by enough goals to be able to turn off the radio. They were qualified as long as there were no goals in Madeira, and on the 4th minute of extra time there was one, for Braga. The minhotos qualify.

Group D

Benfica 1-0 P. Ferreira
1-0 Franco Cervi 39'
Att: 32.945

Vizela (II) 1-2 Vit. Guimarães
1-0 Elízio 26'
1-1 Hernâni Fortes 31'
1-2 Paolo Hurtado 90+2'
Att: 3.878

Vit. Guimarães 2-2 P. Ferreira
0-1 Gleison 17'
0-2 Mateus Silva 48'
1-2 David Teixeira 59'
2-2 Bongani Zungu 90+2'
Att: 3.962

Benfica 4-0 Vizela (II)
1-0 Kostas Mitroglou 26'
2-0 Lisandro López 48'
3-0 Jonas 57'
4-0 Jonas 60'
Att: 18.472

P. Ferreira 2-2 Vizela (II)
0-1 Tiago Ronaldo 20'
0-2 Francis Okoli 77'
1-2 Welthon 82'
2-2 Welthon 86'
Att: 286

Vit. Guimarães 0-2 Benfica
0-1 Gonçalo Guedes 34'
0-2 Gonçalo Guedes 40'
Att: 15.151

Table:
1. Benfica 9
2. Vit. Guimarães 4
3. P. Ferreira 2
4. Vizela (II) 1

The most straight forward group. Benfica won their first 2 games, but still had to make sure they didn't lose in Guimarães and have the same faith as Sporting. In their 2nd game there in a matter of days, Benfica repeated the result they got in the league, settling things early on.

So, Vit. Setúbal, Moreirense, Braga and Benfica are going to the Algarve. 2 Minho teams, 2 Extremadura teams, 2 green, 2 red, 2 favourites, 2 surprises.

Benfica dropped points against Boavista, drawing after being 3 goals down at home (aka doing a Besiktas). After their win in Guimarães (and Porto's draw) last weekend, this relaunches the title race, not only because the gap is only 4 points again, but also because it was shown Benfica can lose points in any game, In fact, they have now dropped more points against small teams at home than away. Also, fantastic Boavista, currently undefeated for 4 games in a row, despite 3 of them being away and one at the Luz. Relegation is unlikely to be a worry.

Sporting didn't take advantage to get back in the title race and also drew, ending up with 10 men. They end the 1st half of the season in 4th place, very disappointing. Chaves, on the other hand, keep deserving praise. They lost their coach and best player to Braga but keep on delivering good results. They have now played every team in the league and only 3 were able to beat them: Benfica, FC Porto and Braga. Only Benfica and FC Porto have less defeats, remarkable!

FC Porto didn't blink and got revenge over Moreirense after their defeat for the League Cup. Easy win, nothing to say, could have been for more. FC Porto have been extremely strong at home, only Benfica got out of the Dragão without losing (and didn't deserve to). If they can improve their away form, Benfica will have to watch out.

Braga closed the first half of the season with a win and in 3rd place. Despite their terrible European campaign, they've been good in the league and could be in the race until the end.

Vit. Guimarães dropped points in Feira and are being left behind. They're still comfortable in the top 5, though. Very good first half of the season! :applause:

In the race for 6th, Rio Ave's loss at the Restelo is the highlight and they drop to 8th. Marítimo beat Paços de Ferreira, conquered 6th and are now the favourites to end there. Fantastic recovery after Daniel Ramos took over, their home record is 5-1-0 beating Braga and Benfica! Chaves, as already mentioned, keep hanging on up there and Arouca might be joining the race after having won 5 of the last 7 games, they're just 3 points from 6th now!

At the bottom, Feirense were the only ones getting a point so good matchday for them. They've completed the 1st half of the season in 15th, 3 points above the drop. Still, if we're still expecting a recovery by Nacional, then it'll be uncomfortable for them. Are we still expecting a recovery from them, though? New coach Jokanovic started with a draw against Braga, but lost his 2nd game not taking advantage of the fact Moreirense and Tondela were visiting tough grounds. Too early, but not encouraging, Same goes for Tondela's new coach Pepa who debuted with a loss. He might replicate Luís Campos' feat of relegating 2 teams in a season if Tondela and Moreirense go down in the end. And should we start including Estoril in this fight?

Table:

1. Benfica 42
2. FC Porto 38

1. Gelson Martins (Sporting) 8

18th Matchday

P. Ferreira vs. Moreirense
FC Porto vs. Rio Ave
Marítimo vs. Sporting
Arouca vs. Boavista
Benfica vs. Tondela
Feirense vs. Estoril Praia
Belenenses vs. Vit. Setúbal
Braga vs. Vit. Guimarães
Chaves vs. Nacional

Very interesting matchday with 3 matches between top 8 teams, including the Minho derby. Sporting visit Marítimo at the worst possible time, as they can't afford to drop any more points and the Madeirenses are onfire!

Before that, though, we have the Cup Quarterfinals midweek (first 2 games on Tuesday, other 2 on Wednesday):

Estoril Praia vs. Académica (II)
Chaves vs. Sporting
Sp. Covilhã (II) vs. Vit. Guimarães
Benfica vs. Leixões (II)

Chaves bullied again Sporting and knock them out of the Cup :applause:

I hope that either Chaves, Maritimo or Boavista will qualify for the Europa League.

Absolutely remarkable, I'm running out of words to praise Chaves, fantastic season so far!

Boavista seems unlikely at the moment, but who knows if they keep their form. Marítimo and, surprisingly, Chaves are in the race. Right now I see Marítimo as favourites for 6th, Rio Ave being their strongest competitors, but they'll need Benfica or Vitória Guimarães to win the Cup for 6th to matter, while Chaves can do it through either competition. Estoril Praia are in the Cup semis, so they'll be a candidate too if someone can deny Benfica in the Cup.

Btw, if Chaves make it to the EL, they would be one of the worst connected teams in the competition, being 150 Km from Porto airport! Any other examples like this?

It didn't start again, it just never stopped, there's no winter break.

What is it that doesn't align? Note that the U19 championship is divided in two zones (north and south) with the top 4 of each advancing to the final stage to decide the champion. Futebol365 shows both zones in one page, on soccerway you have to switch zones on the left menu. But both show the same information.

FC Porto and Sporting are donning their respective zones, btw.
