Yes, I also read that Pana asked for their first match to be played 'away' since there is ongoing work in OAKA and Leoforos!

The league starts this weekend.
Almost.

The AEK-Olympiacos MD1 match will be played in December.
Apollon Smyrnis will not play in the first 3 MDs.
PAS Giannina will not play in the first 2 MDs.

So we will have a distorted league table for quite a while.

In the top, the top4 are expected to finish in the same order with last year : Olympiacos, PAOK, AEK, Panathinaikos.
Panathinaikos for me is a wild card, they are a completely new team, this could either work very well or turn to a disaster.
AEK's transfer window is not the best one so far.

With only 4 European places up for grabs this year, the mission becomes more difficult for the chase pack : Aris managed to avoid disaster with the end of their transfer ban, has some changes from last year, and starts from the pole position theoretically. Atromitos had an impressive pre-season with the return of Canadi as coach and will be stronger than last year. OFI and Asteras remain quite good teams that have a top-6 (so play-off) spot as a goal.

Larisa is expected to have another uneventful season.
PAS Giannina, despite being newly promoted has a "heavy" brand name and has the experience to avoid the bottom-2.

The other 4 are the ones that are expected to fight to avoid relegation : the cancerous team Volos that exists to bring betting money to the mayor of the city/owner Beos, Panaitolikos that got away with murder last season, Lamia that has the smallest budget of the league, and Apollon that is forming their roster now, since they did not know in which division they will play.

5 Spanish-speaking transfers for Pana, 1 Portuguese-speaking and 1 Greek-speaking! Technical Director Xavi Roca and Head Coach Dani Poyatos making the decisions. Let's see what the new season will be like.

Vangelis Moras doesn't want to stop playing!

He is 39 years old and he has played (since 1999) for:
AEL, Proodeftiki, AEK, Bologna, Swansea City (1 app), Cesena, Hellas Verona, FC Bari, Panetolikos, AEL [again] and now Apollon Larissa!
He has 27 apps for Greece.

Loukas Vyntra is 6 months older than Moras and he now plays for Lamia FC!

The season started with the two Thessaloniki based teams winning their homegame.

Aris won 3-1 against Lamia after trailing by a Lazar Romanic penalty. This is the second year in a row Romanic manages to score the first goal of the season.

PAOK won 1-0 (against Larisa) thanks to a beautiful volley of 18 year old Christos Tzolis.
PAOK is not a club. PAOK is a cultural phenomenon.

And funnily, these are the only 2 goals Romanic has scored for Lamia !

MD 1 :

PAOK-Larisa 1-0

PAOK could have won by a larger margin but they wasted many chances (Akpom most of them), and nearly paid for it in Larisa's single chance in added time. Tzolis scoring the winning goal again.

Aris-Lamia 3-1

New year, same behaviour by Aris, shaky in defense that nearly led to a shocking result, but they managed to win the match with 3 goal in the last 20 minutes of the game. Horrendous refereeing by referee Diamantopoulos and VAR referee Manouchos, did not count a Lamia goal at 0-1, showed complete ignorance about the rule changes (yellow card and advantage).

OFI-Panaitolikos 1-1

OFI needs to do much better in their European match, bad start to the league against a relatively weak opponent at home.

Atromitos-Volos 0-2

Shocker, Atromitos had looked very good in pre-season but messed up, CB Risvanis got a red card in the end of the 1st half and subsequetly this led to Canadi's team losing a game they expected to win.

Asteras Tripoli-Panathinaikos 1-0

A match that could have gone both ways, chances for both teams, Asteras scored one of them though and took the win in Dani Poyatos' first match in the bench of the Greens.

Apollon-PAS and AEK-Olympiacos will be played in later dates.

Cricial midwewk for the coefficient with Aris and OFI facing Kolos and Apollon Limasol at home in the EL, while PAOK will look for the upset against Benfica in CLQ3.

After the Kolos fiasco, Michael Oenning is fired from Aris.

OFI took the defeat rather calmly, probably they knew that their team is too weak for Europe...

Another disastrous performance by Greece's "smaller" European tickets.

You can't just build a new defence and offence almost from scratch in a couple of months with barely any official matches.

Which brings us back to the draw.

Zrinjski or Shkendija they could still beat in a single game, especially in Thessaloniki, just based on talent.
But against the Cypriots, Hapoel, Partizan or Galata I don't give them a chance.
Turns out I wasn't that far off, probably gave OAris too much credit in first place.

OFI played against a more experienced opponent.
I'd like to wish them better luck next time, but with only 4 tickets remaining that might now be way in the future.

MD 2 :

PAOK-Atromitos 1-1

PAOK lacked energy and was sloppy, probably thinking about Krasnodar and/or tired from the huge win against Benfica, Atromitos took advantage of it and although they wasted chances and PAOK led with another Zivkovic goal, an own goal gave the point to the away team.

Olympiacos - Asteras Tripoli 3-0

Olympiacos wasted 45 minutes with a non-functioning formation, seemed to lacked match pace, but the substitutions of Fortounis and Masouras at HT were enough to make the differenve against Asteras, who was quite solid defensively and totally non-threatening in attack while tha match was under contention.

Panaitolikos - AEK 0-2

A win for AEK but not a good match few days before Saint Gallen, had lots of trouble against a weak opponent, scored from a corner kick, Panaitolikos missed a penalty (after which we had a very weird incident with defender Insua touching the ball with both his hands while the ball was held by the GK, is that illegal? I have no idea, never seen that before), and AEK scored a 2nd late goal to finish the job.

Lamia - OFI 1-2

Cultness of Greek football strikes again, a Super League match delayed because the lines of the box were painted in the wrong spot and had to be repainted. OFI was better, led by 2 goals quite easily, Lamia counter-attacked in the end, scored with a penalty (which was kind of clear but the referee and the VAR referee needed 7 minutes of chatting to decide that) and gave OFI a scare in the last minutes.

Volos - Aris 0-1

Aris leads the league (since Olympiacos and AEK have 1 less match) being the only team to win both games. A Bruno Gama penalty gave Aris the much needed win afer the Kolos shameful fiasco. Aris wasted more chances, and was (again) shaky in defense against a weaker opponent. Akis Mantzios will be the new coach.

PAS-Larisa and Panathinaikos-Apollon will be played in later dates.

Standings

Aris 6 (2)
OFI 4 (2)
PAOK 4 (2)
Olympiacos 3 (1)
AEK 3 (1)
Asteras Tripolis 3 (2)
Volos 3 (2)
Atromitos 1 (2)
Panaitolikos 1 (2)
PAS Giannina 0 (0)
Apollon Symrnis 0 (0)
Larisa 0 (1)
Panathinaikos 0 (1)
Lamia 0 (2)

MD 3 :

Volos-PAOK 0-0

PAOK lined up a reserve 11, trying to conserve their players for the CL Play-Offs return leg. The result was wasting the first half with only a few chances. In the 2nd half and after a few subs, PAOK wasted the one chance after the other and dropped 2 very unexpected points against the (toothless in attack) hosts.

Olympiacos - Panaitolikos 2-0

Like PAOK, Olympiacos lined up a starting 11 with some changes, and like PAOK, the 1st half was wasted with barely any threats. Mathieu Valbuena entered the 2nd half and changed the pace, Olympiacos scored an early goal with El Arabi, wasted loads of chances and scored a 2nd goal a few minutes before the end. Panaitolikos had a huge chance in the 1st half, and were defending for the rest of the game.

Aris-PAS Gianina 2-2

First points dropped for Aris, but can't be complaining since PAS went up 0-2 after 20 minutes. Very good debut for PAS in the season, Aris launched a counter attack and managed to claw their way back to the game. Nothing new about Aris, they find ways to score usually, but their defense is a joke. PAS looked better than the rest of relegation candidates.

OFI-Atromitos 2-2

OFI must be face-slapping that they managed not to win this game. Better during the whole match, find themselves trailing after a 1st half hitting the post and being beaten by GK Gianniotis, and Atromitos scored in injury time. OFI turned the match around with 2 goals of Sardinero but Atromitos got the point in 94' and while playing with 10 men.

AEK-Lamia 3-0

AEK won easily at home against the worst team of the league so far. Garcia scored in his debut, AEK had a good preparation match for Wolfsburg.

Larisa-Panathinaikos 1-1

Panathinaikos was better in the 1st half and found the goal with Mached against a completely harmless Larisa that had 0 shots. Then with no explanation Panathinaikos decided to stay in their own half and give space to Larisa in the 2nd half, and Larisa punished them, despite barely being threatening for almost the whole match, with a goal in 87'.

Apollon-Asteras will be played in a later date.

Standings

Aris 7 (3)
Olympiacos 6 (2)
AEK 6 (2)
OFI 5 (3)
PAOK 5 (3)
Volos 4 (3)
Asteras Tripolis 3 (2)
Atromitos 2 (3)
Panaitolikos 1 (3)
PAS Giannina 1 (1)
Larisa 1 (2)
Panathinaikos 1 (2)
Apollon Symrnis 0 (0)
Lamia 0 (3)

It didn’t happen… As I have said before, Lazaros Christodoulopoulos has played for all four top Greek clubs (Pana, Oly, AEK and PAOK), plus for Bologna, Hellas Verona, Sampdoria, and now for Atromitos. He is 34 years old.
