Jornada 26 begins

Fri. 17 March 2100 Valladolid 1, Athletic 3 Valladolid is 14th, two points above the top of the drop. Athletic is ninth, two points back of the last European spot. At 30'', Iñigo Martínez fires in a free kick--deflection included--to give Athletic the lead--0-1. Halftime in Pucela--0-1. At 57', Oscar de Marcos assists Gorka Guruzeta, who makes it 0-2. At 74', Larín, on his second attempt, puts in a loose ball in the area--1-2. At 77', handball in the area, albeit accidental, by Joaquín Fernández of Valladolid. Vesga converts at 78'--1-3. 21,707 reported on hand. With the win, Athletic climbs to seventh place.

Sat. 18 March

1400 Almería 1, Cádiz 1 Almería is 19th, just one point back of the lowest team not in the drop; a win here almost certainly will lift them above the drop. Cádiz is two points and three places ahead of Almería. Scoreless first half, with Almería coming closer . . . 12,183 reported on hand. At 49', Roger Martí scores what could turn out to be an extremely important goal for Cádiz--0-1. Martí put in a throw-in by Luis Hernández :!:  At 95', penalty in favor of Almería for a clumsy foul in the area; converted by Melero at 96'-1-1, which is the final. Almería will remain in the drop.

1615 Rayo 2, Girona 2 Rayo is seventh, but they've gone 0-3-2 in their last five games. Girona is in 12th place, four points above the drop. At 23', Isi Palazón lets go a shot from waaaaaay out and scores :!:   Whatta shot :!: . . . and 1-0, against the run of play. At 29', Tsyhankov puts in the rebound of a shot that Dimitrievski can't hold--1-1. At 34', Oscar Trejo gives Rayo the lead with a shot as he cuts through the area--2-1; heck of a game in the last few minutes :!: At 37', penalty awarded to Rayo. Trejo takes the pk and the goalie saves, but the penalty is repeated as a Girona player entered the area early. Rayo got tricky and had Trejo just touch the ball on the second try for Isi to kick it into the goal, but Isi missed badly--still 2-1  how NOT to convert a pk :!: :!: Messi and Luis Suárez did this once in a game and scored, but Trejo isn't Messi, and Isi isn't Suárez. Halftime in Vallecas. You could see it coming--Rayo playing poorly, Girona could see a million opportunities, and Tsyhankov scores at 52' to tie it--2-2, and lots of time to go . . . Rayo holds on for one point--¡menos mal! They looked very poor out there today . . .

1830 Espanyol 1, Celta 3 Espanyol is three places and one point above the drop. Celta is 11th, now five points above the drop. At 26', Gabri Veiga scores his ninth goal of the season for Celta--0-1. At 44', pk awarded To Celta; Aspas converts at 45'--0-2 at the half in Cornellà-El Prat, where 26,231 are reported on hand. At 82', Carles Pérez ices it for Celta with a goal from just inside the area--0-3. At 86', Gragera puts Espanyol on the board--1-3. And thus it ends--Celta looking to the future possibilities of European fútbol, and Espanyol looking over their shoulder toward the drop.

2100 Atlético 3, Valencia 0 Atleti has climbed to third place, six points above the highest team not in a CL spot. Valencia is above the drop on H2H over Getafe. At 23', Marcos Llorente assists Griezmann, who does well to control the pass; Griezmann makes no mistake--1-0. At 29', Valencia's Hugo Duro puts the ball in the net, but the goal is disallowed for a foul in the buildup--still 1-0. And 1-0 at halftime. At 49', Carrasco makes it 2-0. At 67', Morata assists Lemar, who heads in for 3-0. Wonderful play by Morata :!: And 3-0 is the final. Valencia will remain above the drop IF Getafe loses their home game against Sevilla.

Sun. 19 March

1400 Betis 1, Mallorca 0 Betis is three points shy of the lowest team in a CL spot. Mallorca is in mid-table, six points above the drop and three points shy of the last European spot. Scoreless first half in the Benito Villamarín. At 48', Borja Iglesias gives Betis the lead, as he changes the direction of a teammate'e shot enough to leave Mallorca's goalie hung out to dry :grin1: --1-0. And 1-0 is the final score--at the moment, Betis is equal on points with la Real Sociedad, which plays next.

1615 Osasuna 0, Villarreal 3 #8 hosts #6. Osasuna is four points back of the Yellow Submarine. At 14', Pedraza centers for Chukwueze to score--0-1. Chukwueze puts in another one at 17', but VAR disallows the second one for offside. Still 0-1 at the half. 20,128 reported in El Sadar. At 85', El Comandante Morales cuts loose from just about the center circle and makes it 0-2 for the Yellow Submarine. . . . Beware of your goalie going out to pick grapes . . . :grin1: At 93', El Comandante makes it 0-3 with a virtual tap-in. 0-3 is the final; keeps pace with the three teams immediately ahead of them--Betis, Real Sociedad, and Atlético.

1615 Real Sociedad 2, Elche 0 La Real is in the last CL spot, three points ahead of Betis. Elche is still buried in last place, 13 points back of the lowest team not in the drop. Scoreless first half in Anoeta. La Real breaks through at 48', Take Kubo the scorer--1-0. Barrenetxea scores at 90' to make the final 2-0 for la Real.

1830 Getafe 2, Sevilla 0 Geta is the top of the drop, even on points but back of Valencia on GD, and two points back of 13th place Sevilla. Scoreless first half in the Alfonso Pérez. IF Geta can hold on to this score, they'll be one point above the drop. At 50', giveaway by Sevilla, good pass to Munir inside the area and Munir makes no mistake--1-0 for Geta--if the game ends this way, Getafe will be in 13th place :!: At 95', Enes Unal ices it for Getafe, now in 13th place.

2100 Barça 2, Real Madrid 1 Full time. The "Clásico," which some have renamed The "Cáshico"; #1 Barça hosts #2 Real Madrid; the former has a lead of nine points over el Realísimo. The latter won 3-1 when they met in the Bernabéu back in October. Barça started off looking really good; but at 9', Araújo deflected a "center-chut" into his own net--Ter Stegen had no chance--0-1. Score remained the same until 45', when Sergi Roberto, in the middle of a crowd in the Real Madrid area, put the ball in the net--1-1 at the half. Game stays tied--seemingly--until 81', when Marco Asensio seems to give Real the lead--only to have the goal disallowed for the smallest offside imaginable. With the game winding down, Kesssie scores for Barça at 92', and three-plus minutes which seem to last half an hour, ensue. Barça's lead over Reel with 12 games to go in the season is . . . 12 points :!: :applause: :applause: :applause: reported attendance: 95,745 :!:

No game Monday--and Jornada 27 doesn't start until 31 March.

Jornada 27 of LaLiga kicks off

Fri. 31 March 2100 Mallorca 0, Osasuna 0 Mallorca is in mid-table, six points above the drop and four points below the last European spot. Osasuna is ninth, two points above Mallorca. Scoreless in Son Moix at the half. 14,312 reported on hand. At 69', Copete of Mallorca sees a red card. And the game ends scoreless.

Sat. 1 Apr.

1400 Girona 2, Espanyol 1 Girona is 12th in LaLiga, five points above the drop and five points below the last European spot. Espanyol lis 17th, one point and one place above the drop. Scoreless at halftime in Montilivi--not for lack of trying :!: 12,841 on hand. At 53', Arnau Martínez scores from the edge of the area to give Girona the lead--1-0. Can Espanyol avoid a loss :?: At 74', Braithwaite ties it for Espanyol--1-1. At 83', Sergi Gómez of Espanyol sees a red card, and it's Katie, bar the door :!: At 87', penalty kick awarded to Girona--pretty clear. At 88', Stuani converts, and Girona leads 2-1, which is the final score. For the moment, Girona is in 10th place.

1615 Athletic 0, Getafe 0 Athletic is in the last (probable) European spot (seventh) and seven points above Getafe; the latter is three points above the drop in 13th place. Scoreless first half. Scoreless second half. Chapeau to Geta for taking a huge point home from San Mamés Barri.

1830 Cádiz 0, Sevilla 2 Cádiz is 15th, two points above the drop, while Sevilla is even on points with Cádiz and ahead on GD. Scoreless first half in El Nuevo Mirandilla. 19,181 reported on hand. At 51', Ocampos gives Sevilla the lead with a deflected shot--0-1. At 74', En-Nesyri scores from inside the area--0-2. And that's the final. Sevilla will climb one place to 13th; Cádiz will stay above the drop unless Valladolid, Valencia, and Almería all win.

2100 Elche 0, Barça 4 Elche is the "farolillo rojo," buried in last place almost the whole season: they're 14 points shy of the lowest team not in the drop. Barça leads LaLiga by 12 points over Real Madrid. At 20', Lewandowski gives Barça the lead--0-1 at the half. A number of changes in the Barça lineup what with the Copa del Rey game against Real Madrid coming up Wednesday. At 56', Ansu Fati scores from outside the area on a solo job--0-2. At 66', Lewandowski scores his second of the game--0-3. Ferrán Torres closes the scoring at 70'--0-4. Barça's lead is 15 points over el Realísimo, but the lead will probably go back to 12 when Real plays.

Sun. 2 Apr.

1400 Celta 2, Almería 2 Celta has been "recalled to life," winning 11 points of the last possible 15; they're now in 10th place, just two points back of the last European spot. Almería is next-to-last, just two points shy of the lowest team not in the drop. At 7', Babic heads in for Almería--0-1. But at 10', Seferovic ties it for Celta; assist by Gabri Veiga--1-1. At 32', Luis Suárez assists Arnau Puigmal, who gives Almería the lead--1-2. If they can hold it, Almería will win for the first time on the road this season :!: But at 42', Carles Pérez ties it after a giveaway by Celta--2-2. Tablas at halftime in Balaídos--2-2. 14,001 on hand. Second half is scoreless, so 2-2 is the final. Celta remains 10th; Almería is still in the drop.

1615 Real Madrid 6, Valladolid 0 El Real is in second place, 12 points back of Barça. Valladolid is 16th, two points above the drop. At 22', Marco Asensio assists Rodrygo, who makes it 1-0. At 29', Vini Jr. assists Benzema, who heads in--2-0. At 32', Benzema scores again--3-0  Esto huela a goleada descomunal :!: No kidding :!: . . . As Benzema completes a hat trick at 36'--a "palomita," a "chilena" . . . what next :?: :!: Halftime . . . At 73', Marco Asensio makes it 5-0. At 91', Lucas Vázquez makes it 6-0. And that's the final.

1830 Villarreal 2, Real Sociedad 0 #6 hosts #4; Villarreal is seven points back of la Real; the latter is fourth, in the last CL spot. Scoreless first half. Breakthrough comes at 75', as Zubimendi fouls Chukwueze in the area. Dani Parejo converts at 77'--1-0. At 81', Jackson scores with a solo job as he dribbles across the top of the area--2-0. With the win, the Yellow Submarine pulls within one point of fifth-place Betis and within four points of fourth-place Real Sociedad.

2100 Atlético 1, Betis 0 Atleti is in third place, 17 points shy of the league lead and six points ahead of Betis, the highest team not in a CL spot. Scoreless first half in the Nuevo Metropolitano. 61,623 reported on hand. Simeone does it again  he pulls a rabbit . . . no, a Correa--out of a hat and it's the winning call. Angel Correa comes in late and somehow finds the winning goal for Atleti--1-0 the final.

Mon. 3 Apr. 2100 Valencia 1, Rayo 1 Valencia is immersed in a nightmare season--they're used to fighting for a European spot and this season they're fighting to avoid the drop. Valencia is currently top of the drop, one point back of the lowest team not in the drop. El Rayo is in eighth place, back of the last European spot only on H2H vs Athletic, but Rayo is only 0-4-2 in their last six games, and the coming schedule looks pretty rough . . . At 9', Comesaña is left unmarked in the area; he scores although his shot is deflected by the goalie--0-1. And 0-1 at the half. Can Rayo hold on :?: Will Valencia lose another home game :?: 39,769 reported on hand. At 81', penalty in favor of Valencia for a handball by Ballieu in the area. Kluivert scores with the pk at 82'--1-1. And that's the final score. Valencia climbs out of the drop with the point for the tie, ahead of Espanyol and Almería only on GD. Rayo remains eighth, back of Athletic on H2H.

Today, 4 April, is the second leg of the first semifinal of the Copa del Rey

Athletic-Osasuna Game will start 10 minutes late. Osasuna's bus was delayed on its way to San Mamés Barri. At 33', Iñaki Williams scores for Athletic, and it's all even overall. Second half ends scoreless, so we go to overtime--1-1 after two legs. At 116', Pablo Ibáñez scores from the balcony of the area to give Osasuna the lead--1-2 overall :!: And Athletic can't find a goal, so . . .

OSASUNA is the first finalist :exclamation:

Jornada 28 begins

Fri. 7 April 2100 Sevilla 2, Celta 2 Sevilla is 13th in LaLiga after their win in Cádiz. Celta is 10th, four points ahead of Sevilla, after their tie at home against Almería. At 19', Gueye of Sevilla sees a second yellow. At 26', Sevilla just manages to avoid conceding a goal. At 43', En-Nesyri scores with a header off a corner--1-0. That's the score at halftime in the Sánchez Pizjuán. 30,778 reported on hand. At 67', Celta hits the woodwork. But at 81', Marcos Acuña lets fly from waaaaaay out and scores--2-0--vaya golazo :!: At 89', Miguel Rodríguez cuts the lead to 2-1, as he scores from the balcony of the area. And at 93', Gonzalo Paciéncia scores with a header, assisted by Hugo Mallo, to tie it for Celta--2-2, and that's the final, and Sevilla must thank goalie Dimitrovic for avoiding a loss, as he saves the (remaining) furniture at 96'.

Sat. 8 April

1400 Osasuna 2, Elche 1 Osasuna comes off their qualification for the Final of the Copa del Rey; can they stay focused against the "farolillo rojo" :?: With a win, they'd move into the last European spot. Elche is 14 points shy of the three teams immediately above them. At 44', against the run of play, Mascarell assists Tete Morente, who scores to give the visitors the lead--0-1. And Elche leads at the half in El Sadar--0-1. Elche holds the lead until 71', when Abde, helped by a deflection, ties it for Osasuna--1-1. At 84', Abde scores again, this time from beyond the half-moon, to give Osasuna the lead--2-1. That's the final score. Osasuna passes both Rayo and Athletic for the moment as they climb to seventh place.

1615 Espanyol 1, Athletic 2 Espanyol is now the top of the drop, back of Valencia on GD. Athletic comes off the VERY disappointing loss in the semifinal of the Copa del Rey against Osasuna; they probably need a win here to stay in the last European spot. At 22', Iñaki Williams cuts into the Espanyol area and lets go a perfect shot--0-1. At 45', Braithwaite puts the ball in the net--disallowed, in my opinion incorrectly, and it's 0-1 at the half.
At 75', Nico Williams scores to make it 0-2 for Athletic. At 90', Unai Simón fails to hold a shot, and Darder puts Espanyol on the board as he puts in the loose bakk--1-2, but that's the final. Athletic assures themselves seventh place at the end of the jornada.

1830 Real Sociedad 2, Getafe 0. La Real is in the last CL spot; their margin over fifth place is just three points, so a win is needed badly. Getafe is now three points and four places above the drop. At 43', pk awarded to la Real. Oyarzábal takes the pk at 44', saved by Soria. But at 45'+2', Oyarzábal is given another chance to score, and he puts in a rebound--1-0 at the half. 27,606 reported on hand. At 60', Take Kubo makes it 2-0; assist by Mikel Merino. 2-0 is the final; la Real assures themselves that they'll remain in the last CL spot at the jornada's end.

2100 Real Madrid 2, Villarreal 3 El Real will be coming off their semifinal game in the Copa del Rey in the Camp Nou; they're 12 points back of Barça in LaLiga. Villarreal is in sixth place, just four points back of the last CL spot. Can they get something from this game :?: At 16', Marco Asensio tries a pase-chut which deflects off Pau Torres and goes in--1-0 on the own goal. At 39', Chukwueze ties it 1-1; assist by Lo Celso. At 48', Vini JR runs through a crowd to make it 2-1. At 70', el Comandante Morales ties it for Villarreal--2-2. At 80', Chukwueze makes it 2-3 with a shot from just beyond the area. WOW--whatta great game :exclamation: Villarreal holds on to win :!: :applause: :applause: :applause: Both teams deserve congratulations for playing such a great game :!:

1400 Valladolid 3, Mallorca 3 Valladolid is one point and two places above the drop. Mallorca is in lower mid-table, six points above the drop. At 33', Kike Pérez gives Valladolid the lead with a beautiful strike from inside the area--1-0. Halftime in Pucela on a beautiful afternoon. 18,010 reported on hand. At 53', Muriqi ties it for Mallorca with a header that Masip gets a hand on but can't keep out--1-1. At 58', Kang-In Lee takes a fk just outside the area; ball is deflected to Morlanes, who scores with a half-volley from outside the area--1-2. At 68', it's all even again, as Amallah puts in a rebound inside the area--2-2. At 86', Monchu heads in to put Valladolid ahead--3-2. This would be a very important win for Valladolid . . . But at 92', handball pk awarded to Mallorca; at 94', Muriqui converts the pk and it's 3-3 :!:  And 3-3 is the final score :!:

1615 Betis 0, Cádiz 2 Huge regional rivalry :!: Betis is fifth, three points shy of the last CL spot. Cádiz is 15th, one point and three places above the drop. At 38', Canales of Betis sees a red card. Scoreless first half in the Benito Villamarín. At 53', Alcaraz breaks the tie as he converts a pk and gives Cádiz the lead--0-1. At 59', after a Betis giveaway, Bongonda and Chris Ramos go two-on-one with Rui Silva and Chris Ramos scores after Bongonda passes to him--0-2. And Ruibal sees a red card, so Betis will finish with nine players on the field--or fewer :!: Huge win for Cádiz in terms of avoiding the drop; huge loss for Betis in terms of making it to a CL spot.

1830 Almería 2, Valencia 1 Almería is next-to-last, but they're even on points with 17th place Valencia. Almería has won only four points on the road all season, but one of those points was won at Valencia. The latter is immersed in a nightmare season; they've won only six points in 13 away league games to date. Scoreless first half in Almería. If this score holds, Valencia will have the tie-breaker against Almerís on GD. But at 49', Gonzalo Melero scores to give Almería the lead and lift them out of the drop. At 58', Babic heads in to make it 2-0 for Almería. But at 61', Samu Castillejo puts Valencia on the board, and it's 2-1 and Katy bar the door :!: 14,039 reported on hand. Almería holds on to win :!: This lifts Almería out of the drop and leaves Valencia as the Top of the Drop, ahead of Espanyol and Elche.

2100 Rayo 1, Atlético 2 Rayo is 0-5-2 in their last seven games. They're still 10 points above the drop, but can they stay in eighth place :?: El Atlético is in third place, now nine points above the highest team not in a CL spot. Atleti is 17 points back of the league lead. At 22, Griezmann passes to Morata to Nahuel Molina, who scores his first goal for Atleti--0-1.At 85', Fran García puts Rayo on the board with a shot from waaaaaaay out--1-2, but hardly any time left . . . And Atleti hangs on :!: --1-2 the final.

Mon. 10 April 2100 Barça 0, Girona 0 Full time. A "lesser" Catalán derby. Barça leads LaLiga by 12 points over Real Madrid. Barça comes off their semifinal second leg against Real Madrid--euphoria or gloom :?: :!: Girona is in mid-table, seven points above the drop. With 78,425 reported in the Camp Nou, Barça and Girona play to a scoreless tie. Barça looked . . . well, not very good :!: Barça, however, picks up a point on Real Madrid, and they now lead by 13 points over second place Real. Girona remains in mid-table, eight piints above the drop.

After watching something else I noticed on the sports news that this match was going to extra time so I watched just the extra time.

Our commentator had only just got the words out of his mouth that Osasuna had done absolutely nothing during the match other than defend and that Athletic were the only team who could win unless it went to a penalty shootout than Osasuna scored the goal as you described above :exclamation:

And REAL MADRID joins OSASUNA in the final after a 0-4 win over Barça in the Camp Nou. Barça played reasonably well for 45', but came unglued thereafter to lose by a "goleada." At 45', Courtois saves the furniture for Real; the visitors take the ball to the other end and tie the overall 1-1, as Vini Jr. scores at 45'+1'. Barça never puts themselves back together, absorbing a hat trick by Benzema scored at 56'--assist Modric--, 57' Benzema converts a pk, and 81'. The final score over the two legs  1-4. Attendance  94,902.

Real will play the final in La Cartuja in Sevilla against Osasuna.

I'm generally anti-Real, but have to admit it was a joy to see how they handled Barcelona yesterday. It seemed they could score any time they had the ball (if they wanted to).
