AaB has sacked coach Lars Friis after less than a year in charge. They are only 11th in the table right now, but the league is very close, and performance-wise I don't think they have been that bad. In some games, it has more been about poor goalkeeping than the overall effort on the pitch. It was disappointing for them to lose the European spot in the playoffs last season.
The replacement is also quite surprising. Erik Hamrén returns to the club. He coached them from 2004 - 2008, and won one championship in charge of the side. His last job as Icelandic NT coach ended in november 2020.

After the loss in Herning, their sixth in ten Superliga games, FC København has decided to sack coach Jess Thorup. He took charge in november 2020 after a disastrous start and the sacking of Ståle Solbakken. The team finished the season in third place. Last season, Thorup, after quite some wobbling during the season, led the team to the championship and to the Conference League round of 16. This year the team qualified for the Champions League group stage, but the Superliga start has been very poor.

Thorup has had a difficult time in the club right from the start. He was hired some weeks before the new sporting director Peter Christiansen, so from the start their was a lingering doubt about whether Christiansen actually liked Thorup as a coach. Thorup's communication hasn't always been spot on either. Once after a home game, he remarked it had been difficult for the players because there were so many spectators and so much pressure. Recently, he remarked after the loss at FC Nordsjælland that the team didn't have any leaders when Zeca wasn't playing. The positive signs for Thorup has been that he brought the important title and CL group stage to Copenhagen. Also he introduced a playing style with more focus on technical play, and at (too short) times played perhaps the best football the club ever did. However, performances have been to uneven. It also never seemed like a healthy relationsship with Christiansen, whose many horrible offensive purchases haven't helped.

The new coach is Jacob Neestrup, who was assistent under Thorup. He was brought in by Christiansen as assistent coach, so it has always been talked about as a possible scenario that he would replace Thorup. Neestrup was head coach for Viborg before joining FCK. He played for several years as a reserve in FCK, and had different coaching jobs in the club before becoming head coach in Viborg.

No sides are really showing the quality of champions. Apart from Lyngby, the sides all seem quite evenly matched. We have had 15 draws in the last 30 matches. The two expected top teams FC København and FC Midtjylland are finding their way with new coaches + a heavy European schedule. And FC København with a number of key players injured too.

Bookmakers now have a tight three-way race between FC Midtjylland, FC København and FC Nordsjælland as the favourites. Those three sides are expected in the championship group along with Randers, Viborg and Silkeborg, while Brøndby are only 7th favourites to get there. In the bottom, Lyngby are as good as gone and without a win after 13 matches. AaB has now caught up with the other teams, so the other promoted side Horsens are again favourites to go back down again with Lyngby.

1. FC Nordsjælland 25
2. Randers FC 23
3. Viborg 22
4. Silkeborg 21
5. FC Midtjylland 20
6. AGF 17
--------------------------
7. FC København 17
8. Brøndby 16
9. OB 16
10. AC Horsens 15
11. AaB 14
12. Lyngby 5

The results of the Danish Cup third round.
In a round without many surprises, Brøndby's humbling 4-0 defeat in Aarhus is of course the major talking point. Several of the big stars were subbed on already in the first half, but didn't improve the performance much. A result which have further increased the heat of Niels Frederiksen's seat. AaB and Viborg were also in severe difficulties, but made it through in added time. FC København had to wait even longer, as it took penalties to beat Hobro. I was on the stadium to watch what was a classic cup game. The underdogs took an early lead, and then defended bravely against the superior opponents. FCK missed several good chances on the Hobro keeper, missed a penalty, had a goal wrongfully ruled out and could easily have had a penalty or two more. When FCK finally equalized, all signs pointed towards a FCK win. But then Haraldsson got his second yellow card for diving, which left the game on a more equal footing until Hobro practically went down to 10 men as well when one of their players became so injured he couldn't really move around. In the end, FCK scored from all five penalties while Matt Ryan saved one of the Hobro shots.

Draw for the fourth round.
Two games with teams outside the top flight, so there will be at least two lower ranked sides in the quarters.
Some local derbyes between Vejle - Horsens and Viborg - FC Midtjylland. Middelfart is the lowest ranked side, but also haven't lost yet this season. FCK with another trip towards Northern Jutland.

Global Football Holdings have purchased a majority of the shares in Brøndby. Current owner Jan Bech Andersen will retain around 15-20% of the shares, and stay as chairman of the board. Scott McLachlan, who until recently was head of international scouting for Chelsea, will be deputy chairman as one of the GFH representatives in the board. Global Football Holdings is a company formed by 14 investors, mostly American ones. They also own different parts of ADO Den Haag, Waasland-Beveren, AD Alcorcon, Estoril, Augsburg, Real Salt Lake and Crystal Palace.

This is a very controversial purchase. Brøndby is probably the big club where the biggest share of the fans are leftist, anti-capitalist, "against modern football" etc, so a significant part of the fans seem opposed. It will be interesting to see whether there will actually be a significant drop off in support for the club, and if so that support would be transferred somewhere else, i.e. an AFC Wimbledon kind of things. It's not like it's the first time Brøndby has been in the hands of capitalist owners, but both Jan Bech and previously Jesper Nielsen were locals and fans of the clubs, who had then made a lot of money in their businesses. The big difference is probably that this is a foreign ownership, where at least some of the investors apparently have some money in tax havens, and whom has had no previous affiliation with the club.

The Danish league coaches have voted on player of the fall.
The winner is FCN's 18-year old Andreas Schelderup, who has been the key player in the league leader's offensive play.
The Norwegian won ahead of his teammate, central midfielder Mads Bidstrup, and FCK's Viktor Claesson. Jay-Roy Grot from Viborg and Yann Aurel Bisseck from AGF were fourth and fifth.

The experts at the Discovery Sport network set this Team of the Fall:
Andreas Hansen (FCN)
Oliver Villadsen (FCN), Adamo Nagalo (FCN), Yann Aurel Bisseck (AGF), Lukas Engel (Silkeborg)
Viktor Claesson (FCK), Mads Bidstrup (FCN), Nicolai Vallys (Brøndby)
Ernest Nuamah (FCN), Jay-Roy Grot (Viborg), Andreas Schelderup (FCN)

The fourth round of the cup was played in this mid-week.
The game of the round was between local rivals Viborg and FC Midtjylland, where the home side showed that they, this season for once, look like the strongest of the two sides. FCK again had to work harder than expected to get past a lower-ranked sides, but two goals by Andreas Cornelius in added time sent them through.

Nykøbing FC (2) - SønderjyskE (2) 1-2 aet
Middelfart BK (4) - AaB (1) 1-2
Aarhus Fremad (3) - Fremad Amager (2) 3-1
Vejle Boldklub (2) - AC Horsens (1) 1-0
Thisted FC (3) - FC Copenhagen (1) 1-3 aet
Randers FC (1) - Silkeborg (1) 1-3
Viborg FF (1) - FC Midtjylland (1) 3-1
AGF (1) - FC Nordsjælland (1) 0-2

The quarter finals are played over two legs, and the draw is as follows.
The the two topranked side in the league and favourites FCK avoided each other in the quarter finals. League leaders FCN are probably most happy by drawing Aarhus Fremad from the third tier, and will hope that the two-leggedness means it's less likely they face the same destiny as Brøndby.

FC Copenhagen (1) - Vejle Boldklub (2)
AaB (1) - Viborg (1)
Aarhus Fremad (3) - FC Nordsjælland (1)
SønderjyskE (2) - Silkeborg (1)

As the Danish Superliga goes into a long winter hiatus, it's the surprise duo of FC Nordsjælland and Viborg in the two top places. FC København got going after Neestrup took over as coach, despite being quite injury plagued and playing a tough schedule. They have cut the FCN advantage to 8 points, and put a slight distance to the rest of the very broad group of teams. Bookmakers have FCN as 2.00 favourites for the title with FCK on 2.75. Viborg are on 6.50, while one of the two pre-season favourites, FCM, is more or less considered out of it with an odds of 20.

In five rounds, all teams will have met each other twice, and the league is divided into a championship group and a relegation group. And right now it looks very tight between 7 teams for the last 3 places in the top 6. Bookies favour FCM for a spot at 1.48, Silkeborg as well on 1.80, and then equal chance for OB and Randers on 1.90. Brøndby and AGF both on 2.30 and Horsens at 3.30.

After a defeat at home against Viborg in the last round, Brøndby decided to sack coach Niels Frederiksen. He took over in June 2019, and will of course always be remembered for the surprising title run in 2020/21.

In the bottom, AaB is in big trouble now, and the big club in Northern Jutland could be out of the league for the first time since 1986. They are 1.18 to be relegated, while Horsens is at 7.00. The surprising trainer move from Lars Friis to Erik Hamren has not worked out at all, and the club is apparently in quite significant economic problems. They are searching for investors, and the latest rumour is that Red Bull is lurking around. The city already got a famous bull sculpture, the Cimbrian Bull, in the center of the city, so maybe they could use that one in a new Red Bull club logo

League standings after 17 games
1. FC Nordsjælland 35
2. Viborg 32
3. FC København 27
4. Silkeborg 24
5. OB 24
6. Randers FC 24
----------------------
7. FC Midtjylland 23
8. AGF 22
9. AC Horsens 22
10. Brøndby 21
11. AaB 14
12. Lyngby 8

Each year, the goalkeepers in the two top divisions vote on Goalkeeper of the Year.

This year's winner was Kamil Grabara from FC København. He received 37 points, while Brøndby's Mads Hermansen received 32 points, and Patrick Carlgren from Randers received 30 points.

League leaders FC Nordsjælland are changing their coach!

Current coach Flemming Pedersen is promoted to the position as techincal director, where he will have the focus on the strategic development of FCN and the whole Right to Dream project. He is replaced as head coach by current assistent coach Johannes Hoff Thorup. The 33-year old Thorup joined FCN eight years ago, and has coached the team's U14 and U17 sides before becoming assistent coach in the summer of 2021.

Brøndby has a new coach as well. There were rumours of several different names, particularly David Wagner, but it ended up with a very familiar face. Jesper Sørensen, who was assistent coach in the club from 2019-2021, is back in the club as head coach. His most recent job was coaching the Danish U21 side, who failed to qualify for the European Championship. He was head coach in Fredericia from 2016-18 with mid-table positions in the second-best league. He also led Silkeborg from 2013-14. He guided the team to promotion to the Superliga in his first season, but then had a horrid time in the top league. In 17 games, the side only managed 4 draws and 13 defeats, so he was sacked halfway through the season.

A quite active transfer window in Denmark.

League leaders FC Nordsjælland sold their biggest profile Andreas Schelderup to Benfica for 9 mio euro, but also brought in two interesting names. The direct replacement for Schelderup will be Emiliano Marcondes, who played in Nordsjælland from 2010-2017, where he scored 37 times in 122 league games. His last half season was magnificient with 17 goals in 19 games, and got him the big move to Brentford. They also bring back 17-year old Zidan Sertdemir, whom the club sold to Leverkusen in 2019. He is generally considered one of the biggest talents in Danish football, and got his debut in the Bundesliga as the 2nd-youngest player ever. However, he hasn't managed to break into the first team squad in Leverkusen fully, so has now been purchased back by FCN.

Second-placed Viborg also lost their biggest profile as striker Jay-Roy Grot has been purchased by Kashiwa Reysol for 1,75 mio euro, six months before his contract was out. They have brought in two possible striker replacements, Paulinho from Estrala and Renato Junior from Agua Santa. Finally, in central midfield they added Magnus Westergaard from Lyngby for some depth in central midfield.

FC København had a new record sale with Danish U21 left back Victor Kristiansen going to Leiciester for 14 mio euro. They also let goalkeeper Matt Ryan go to AZ after a long, public disagreements with the team's other goalkeeper Kamil Grabara. The club for most of the window tried to bring back Thomas Delaney, but he ended up in Hoffenheim. They purchased winger Diogo Goncalves from Benfica and loaned Jordan Larsson.

Silkeborg sold last season's Superliga topscorer Nicklas Helenius to AaB for around 300.000 euro, but otherwise had a very quiet window.

OB let their primary striker Issam Jebali go to Gamba Osaka for 1 mio. euro. As a replacement, Kenneth Zohore was signed on a free transfer. The club also signed central midfielder Alen Mustafic from Slovan Bratislava, and loaned Musa Juwara and Naatan Skytaa.

Randers sold central defender Simon Graves to Palermo for 1.4 mio euro, and as replacement loaned Carl Johansson from IFK Göteborg. They also brought in left winger Simen Nordli from Aalesund.

FC Midtjylland needs to make amends after a poor half season in the league. They purchased Egyptian midfielder Emam Ashour and loaned Armin Gigovic and Astrit Selmani. Their best player Evander was purchased by Portland Timbers for 9.5 mio. euro, while offensive star Anders Dreyer was purchased by Anderlecht for 4.2 mio euro. Finally, Ousmane Diomande, who has been out on loan, was sold for 7.50 mio euro to Sporting CP.

AGF has sold central defender Sebastian Hausner, and let reserve players Sebastian Grønning and Anthony d'Alberto go. They loaned in Mikkel Duelund from Dynamo Kiev, who was an exciting player in the league when playing for FCM. They also signed Peter Bjur from Brøndby and loaned in Felix Beijmo from Malmø.

AC Horsens has been happy with their performance, and managed to keep their squad together. They brought back right back Jacob Buus from Bevern, and loaned Swedish goalkeeper Samuel Brolin from AIK.

Brøndby really needed strengthening after a poor fall. Their primary defender Andreas Maxsø was sold to Colorado, and another central defender Sigurd Rosted went to Toronto. As replacements, they purchased Rasmus Lauritsen in Dinamo Zagreb and loaned Frederik Winther in Augsburg. They also signed Hakon Evjen from AZ.

AaB will try to pull off the Great Escape and avoid relegation, so have signed several players. In addition to Helenius returning to Aalborg, Rasmus Thelander in central defence is also returning to a club, where he has previously been very succesful. Right back Kasper Jørgensen was purchased in Lyngby. Finally, they tried again to solve their goalkeeping problem by loaning Nico Mantl from RB Salzburg.

Lyngby in the bottom are probably already preparing for live in the second tier. Profiles like Adam Sørensen and Kasper Jørgensen was sold, and several other players allowed to leave. They signed Parfait Bizoza from Vendsyssel and Kolbeinn Finnson from Dortmund.

FC København has used the first three rounds of the spring to claw back five points on both of the surprise teams, FC Nordsjælland and Viborg, who celebrated Christmas in the top two spots. FCK has won all three league games, including a 7-0 goal galore against a 9 men OB side, while FCN and Viborg have both dropped points twice. Viborg started the spring off in the worst possible way with a 0-4 home defeat to arch rivals FC Midtjylland, while FCN has dropped points at bottom side Lyngby and lost El Plastico in Silkeborg.

There are two rounds left until the league is divided into two halves, and it looks incredible tight between five sides for the three remaining spots in top 6. The league's second and third biggest budgets in FC Midtjylland and Brøndby are both just outside the top 6 currently.

In the bottom, Horsens has looked horrible and lost three games with a 2-10 GD. Luckily for them, AaB hasn't improved that much yet and only picked up one point. So Horsens still has a 7 point gap to the wrong side of the relegation line.

1. FCN 39p
2. FCK 36p
3. Viborg 36p
4. AGF 29p
5. Randers FC 29p
6. Silkeborg 28p
---------------------
7. FCM 27p
8. Brøndby 27p
9. OB 25p
10. AC Horsens 22p
11. AaB 15p
12. Lyngby 12p

We've also had the first leg of the Danish Cup quarter finals. The return legs are not until early April.

Aarhus Fremad (3rd tier) 0 -3 FC Nordsjælland (1)
FC København (1) 2-0 Vejle (2)
AaB (1) 2-0 Viborg (1)
SønderjyskE (2) 0-2 Silkeborg (1)

1 Match before playoffs.
Denmark with 4 eu spots
FCN, FCK, Viborg with big advantage + Silkeborg/Aalborg still in cup 1/2, means 4th or even 3rd place gives only european playoffs with 1st team of relegation group. 5th,6th (or maybe even 4th) gives nothing.
It seems its better Midtjylland to not qualify to Championship group, or am I wrong?

Viborg is not so strong yes they have a little points advantage but with 10 more matches still to play Midtjylland or Brondby if they qualify for top-6 should be able to overtake them. And also I am not sure about FCN, losing their best player Schjelderup (sold to Benfica) hit them hard. I think FCK will win the title quite easily in the end but there will be hard battle for other European places.
