Three Colombian cities gearing up for new-look FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup 2024

https://www.fifa.com/fifaplus/en/tourna ... -world-cup

Medellín, Cali and Colombian capital Bogotá will stage matches of expanded tournament

A total of 24 teams will compete for trophy between 31 August and 22 September 2024

Colombia hosting a FIFA tournament for the third time

The Colombian cities of Cali, Medellin, and the capital Bogota will be the focus of the football world later this year when they host the newly expanded FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup™ between 31 August and 22 September 2024.

In line with FIFA's strategic objective to give the national teams of FIFA's 211 Member Associations more opportunities to compete on the global stage, the 2024 tournament will be the first to feature 24 teams, a significant increase on the 16 nations that contested previous editions.

The qualified teams will play in four stadiums - Metropolitano de Techo Stadium and Nemesio Camacho El Campin Stadium, both in Bogota, Medellin's Atanasio Girardot Stadium, and the Pascual Guerrero Stadium in Cali - across the three host cities as Colombia welcomes a FIFA tournament for the third time. They will become only the second CONMEBOL host nation of the women's U-20 global competition after Chile in 2008.

All three cities were previously involved when Colombia staged its first FIFA tournament, the men's version of the U-20 competition, in 2011, with three of the four stadiums (excluding Metropolitano de Techo Stadium) staging games. Cali and Medellín were also hosts when the FIFA Futsal World Cup™ came to the South American country in 2016.

Hosting the tournament, which launched the international careers of the likes of Marta, Alex Morgan, Asisat Oshoala, Alex Popp, Megan Rapinoe, and Christine Sinclair, will give further impetus to the vibrant growth of women's football in Colombia.

Colombia’s senior national team reached the quarter-finals of the FIFA Women's World Cup 2023™ and have participated in three of the last four senior global tournaments. They have shone too at U-20 level finishing runners-up at the South American U-20 Women's Football Championship and reaching the last eight of the most-recent FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup™ in 2022, while the South American nation's U-17 side were runners-up at their age-category tournament in India that same year.

Those successes have fuelled the healthy appetite of Colombian TV viewers for the women's game. Colombia's opening encounter at the FIFA Women's World Cup 2023™ was watched by over nine million people in the country, more than three times the total that had watched a FIFA Women's World Cup game before.

In a bid to maintain the momentum in the women's game, and to ensure sustained on-pitch success across all its national teams, the Colombian Football Association (FCF) has launched Colombia Fútbol con Futuro (Football with a Future).

A long-term project that has received USD 2.3 million in support from the FIFA Forward programme, it will revamp and reinforce coaching methodology, boost the number of top-level coaches and players' access to them via training camps, and innovate and modernise the tools available to coaching staff, medical teams, and players across Colombia's football ecosystem.

Only 4 venues for a 24 team tournament?

13 matches each? The pitches are gunna be done in!

#U20WAC glory beckons at Uzbekistan 2024

https://www.the-afc.com/en/national/afc ... _2024.html

Kuala Lumpur: Eight teams will kick off their quest to be crowned the Continent’s best when the AFC U20 Women’s Asian Cup™ Uzbekistan 2024 gets underway this weekend.
Hosted in Uzbekistan for the first time, the 11th edition will be staged in capital city Tashkent and run from March 3 to 16, 2024.
The final draw, held last December, saw the participating teams – Australia, China PR, Chinese Taipei, DPR Korea, Japan, Korea Republic, Uzbekistan and Vietnam – divided into two groups of four.

The quartet of Australia, China PR, Chinese Taipei and Vietnam came through two qualifying rounds to be joined by the three highest-seeded teams from the AFC U-19 Women’s Championship Thailand 2019 – Japan, DPR Korea and Korea Republic – as well as Uzbekistan, who automatically qualified as hosts.

The top four teams at Uzbekistan 2024 will qualify for the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in Colombia – a stage that Uzbekistan and Vietnam will hope to reach for the first time.

All four previous champions – Japan, DPR Korea, Korea Republic and China PR, who are also the only four sides to appear at every edition to date – are in contention to claim the title again, currently held by a Japan side aiming for a record-extending fourth straight success.

Korea Republic, eyeing a third triumph, face Australia in the first match on Sunday at 1pm at the Do’stlik Stadium. This will be the Group A duo’s fifth tournament meeting, with the most recent encounter coming in the previous edition in 2019 when Korea Republic came out on top in the third/fourth Play-off. The East Asians bagged the title in 2004 and 2013, while Australia have appeared at every Finals (nine) since joining the AFC and have finished fourth at each of the last two, with third place (2006) their highest finish.

The second Group A fixture takes place in the evening at 4pm, where Uzbekistan can count on home support at the Jar Stadium against Chinese Taipei. Both teams are making their fifth appearance, with the Central Asians targeting progress to the Knockout Stage for the first time. Their opponents, who finished second in 2002, edged Myanmar via a superior goal difference to qualify and end a 15-year absence from the tournament.

Group B commences on Monday at 1pm with a heavyweight clash between 2007 champions DPR Korea and 2006 winners China PR. The only team to have never finished outside the top four at every edition, DPR Korea have won the most matches (39) and scored the most goals (189) in history. FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup champions in 2006 and 2016, DPR Korea will be keen to break a streak of five consecutive runners-up finishes when they face China PR for the 10th time. The latter have finished third on five occasions and failed to reach the Knockouts for the first time in the previous edition – something they will aim to rectify this time.

Record six-time champions Japan will present a stern test for Vietnam in the second Group B encounter as the holders hunt for an 11th consecutive victory at 4pm at the Jar Stadium. The East Asians, who claimed the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in 2018 and finished second in 2022, have won all three previous meetings against Vietnam, who are making their sixth appearance and count a Quarter-final finish in 2004 as their best result.
