I can't. I don't know how to respond to this level of stupidity. At least the men had a basis with that accursed Fiji win over Honduras. This has nothing. It's like when someone says something so wrong you don't know how to argue against it when it should be so obvious it's wrong.

Qualified teams for FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Colombia 2024

Hosts: Colombia
AFC (4 teams)
CAF (4 teams)
CONCACAF (4 teams): Mexico, USA, Canada, Costa Rica
CONMEBOL (4 teams)
OFC (2 teams): New Zealand, Fiji
UEFA (5 teams): Spain, Germany, France, Netherlands, Austria/Iceland

Costa Rica and Fiji are the beneficiaries of the World Cup expansion based on their ranking in the confederation tournaments.

Austria and Iceland finished 3rd in their respective groups in the U19 Women's Euro. There should have been a play-off to decide the 5th UEFA qualifier, but obviously it was not played as the World Cup expansion was not announced at that time. If the group stage results were used, Austria (4 points) would be ranked higher than Iceland (3 points).

@amenina - will U17 also be expanded? - it will be annual as of 2025.

Also how will CAF format be amended to fit expansion as they have 4 slots instead of 2.

Women's U17 will stay with 16 teams for 2024.

CAF qualifying is a straight knockout with two-legged ties, so they can just remove the 5th round which cuts down from four teams to two. The four winners of the 4th round will thus qualify for the U20 Women's World Cup.

Source? Why expand 1 and not the other?

Ah works out OK as it's double.

It's just by implication. If they had also expanded U17 WWC, they would also announce it in the press release, but they did not.

Also according to the dates, U20 WWC will be from 31 August to 22 September 2024, so that is 23 days, while U17 WWC will be from 16 October to 3 November 2024, so that is 19 days. So U20 WWC is longer because of the expansion to 24 teams, as the winning team has to play 7 matches, while U17 WWC is shorter because it only has 16 teams, and the winning team only has to play 6 matches.

There are probably two reasons that U17 WWC is not expanded for 2024. The first one is that the hosts of U20 WWC Colombia is a big country so they have more stadiums for a 24-team tournament, but the hosts of U17 WWC Dominican Republic is a smaller country and only have the stadiums for a 16-team tournament.

The second is that if the FIFA plan is followed, starting from 2025, there will be annual U17 tournaments for both men and women. If I am not wrong, both will be 48-team tournaments. Since U17 WWC is going to be expanded anyway in 2025, there is no need to do two expansion in two consecutive years.

Odd years - 24 team U20 MWC and 48 team U17 WC for both sexes
Even years - 24 team U20 WWC and 48 team U17 WC for both sexes
