West Ham hit the bar and make a mess of the rebound.

They weren't. Basel scored the 2-1 early in the second half.

How does Basel manage to go far in Europe even in seasons in which they are not particularly good?

Impressive from Lech Poznan, the two Scandinavian teams were very disappointing in the knock-outs. Perhaps their odd season calendar which means they are in between 2 seasons hurts them at this stage of European competitions.

Fiorentina expectly didn't have much trouble.

1-0 HT. West Ham have been pretty comfortable here, lots of the ball.

And they did it again. Of course, if the referee is this much on your side, couple of corners not given, etc.,
This time yellow card is given, though red might have been given, I hope it stops now.
Referee somehow gets overruled now when he finally did give a corner to AZ. It was clear one for AZ, but he listens and listens and then decides…. HT….

Haha, we're sorry. No, seriously, it's just mentality. Once you're in, you believe it and it reinforces itself. We did miss out on European football all together twice as well in the last few years, and you forget about it. Which reinforces that stereotype. Sometimes it's also just luck as well.

Today, Slovan was just out of breath after 75 minutes or so, and that showed. Still, Basel couldn't close it before penalties, and 3 goals against after individual errors are just too much... But you know, we kinda need that would extra money and the push. We will now lose on Sunday against Young Boys and the whole of Switzerland will ask themselves how that team could go so far internationally. It's an enigma. ;-)

Signing off.

Fiorentina, Nice and Basel are absolutely within Lech reach, i wish one of them for Lech and to avoid WHU and Villareal
