Spain are on an 18 Match Winning Streak in UEFA Finals vs Non-Spanish Teams

Post by Lorric »

How's this for absolute insanity... Spain is on an 18 match winning streak in finals against non-Spanish opposition. Bayern on penalties over Valencia in the 00/01 CL and Liverpool over Deportivo Alaves the same year in the UEFA Cup are the last times a Spanish team lost to a non Spanish team. Since then...

CL:

01/02 Real Madrid beat Leverkusen
05/06 Barcelona beat Arsenal
08/09 Barcelona beat Manchester United
10/11 Barcelona beat Manchester United again
14/15 Barcelona beat Juventus
16/17 Real Madrid beat Juventus
17/18 Real Madrid beat Liverpool
21/22 Real Madrid beat Liverpool again

EL

03/04 Valencia beat Marseille
05/06 Sevilla beat Middlesbrough
09/10 Atletico Madrid beat Fulham
13/14 Sevilla beat Benfica
14/15 Sevilla beat Dnipro
15/16 Sevilla beat Liverpool
17/18 Atletico Madrid beat Marseille
19/20 Sevilla beat Inter Milan
20/21 Villarreal beat Manchester United
22/23 Sevilla beat Roma

Just what on Earth... Over two decades of perfection. :? :? :?

The mental strenght, the character they have in do or die finals is something to be admired. Exactly the opposite of the dutch football.

+ A World Cup final (against The Netherlands) and an EURO final (against Italy, a no contest) for Spain as a NT.

A World Cup final (2010) and TWO Euro finals (2008 and 2012).

Right, against Germany after the famous semifinal Germany - Turkey.

However, we can't add Spain's national team into this streak as they'd break it because of losing to France in the Nations League final.

It was Villarreal that beat Man United in 2021, not Sevilla!

Well, that team was coached by Unai Emery with the letters "Villa" in the club's name, so are you sure it wasn't "Aston Villa"? :grin1:

I actually find this streak much more relevant:

09-03-2021: Dortmund 2-2 Sevilla
29-09-2021: Wolfsburg 1-1 Sevilla
20-10-2021: Lille 0-0 Sevilla
08-12-2021: Salzburg 1-0 Sevilla
24-02-2022: Dinamo Zagreb 2-0 Sevilla
17-03-2022: West Ham 2-0 Sevilla
14-09-2022: Copenhagen 0-0 Sevilla
11-10-2022: Dortmund 1-1 Sevilla
02-11-2022: Manchester City 3-1 Sevilla
23-02-2023: PSV Eindhoven 2-0 Sevilla
16-03-2023: Fenerbahçe 1-0 Sevilla
13-04-2023: Manchester United 2-2 Sevilla
11-05-2023: Juventus 1-1 Sevilla

The current EL title holder couldn't win any of its last 13 away matches, the last time they won away was over two years ago!! :-?
Records and Statistics:
 Champions League (all 141 participants - 1992/1993 to 2019/2020)
 Europa League (all 215 participants - 2009/2010 to 2019/2020)
 UEFA Youth League (all 162 participants - 2013/2014 to 2019/2020)

Next season, SeVILLA are playing in CL, VILLArreal are playing in EL, and Aston VILLA are playing in ECL. If they all win, it will be a clean sweep by the VILLAs!

They also didn't "win" the final at neutral venue, with the match ending in a draw decided by penalty kicks. So they have only won at home in their last two European seasons.

And last season when UEFA awarded the final to their home ground, they had one of their worst EL campaigns, losing in the round of 16 to West Ham. It appears the added expectations of playing a home final actually weighs them down. So I suppose that's one way to stop Sevilla from winning the EL.

Sevilla win CL? No chance they'll drop down and win EL! Under the new format they can't do that can they?

2023/24 will be the last season a team can drop down from CL/EL group stage to EL/ECL knockout stage. This also means that starting from 2024/25, no team can defend the EL or ECL titles, since they will start from CL or EL league stage and can no longer drop down. So Sevilla are potentially the last team to defend the EL title next season. Of course, the ECL, now only in its second season, has never been defended, so West Ham or Fiorentina will have the chance to become the only team to defend the ECL title.

Teams might refuse to play in CL and opt for EL to defend title! 🤣🤣😛😛Don't like no drop downs format!
