Raków and Legia didn't play this weekend because of their European matches. Lech and Pogoń did though. Both were in good shape. Lech can celebrate the scoring comeback of their strikers who were either ill or injured before. Dino Hotić has a very promising start. Lech have domestic schedule that is slightly more difficult than other our European teams have. Both Piast and Radomiak should be competitive this season and they showed it against Lech.

Nothing changed at Pogoń, they concede early vs Widzew and then try to catch up. In their third game in a row, since Widzew are back, Zahovič and Pawłowski both scored. Koulouris scored his third goal in third appearance, including Linfield on Thursday and does the striker job pretty well. Sebastian Kowalczyk will leave Pogoń to MLS after many years at the club. He is a type of a solid league player who usually stays in a team or a league for the entire career, but nowadays almost anyone can leave Ekstraklasa and join a foreign side. They don't need to be particularly outstanding here to get an offer from abroad.

Zagłębie won another local derby vs Śląsk and turned score around second time in a row. Games of Puszcza are nice to watch, lots of goals both in the league and previously in promotion play-offs, but they concede very easily so far. In a match between two newcomers, Ruch won, although ŁKS weren't much worse than them. We are still without a really boring match since the end of the season. Even this week we have some highlights from Grodzisk Wielkopolski (Warta - Górnik) and Mielec (Stal - Piast).

Next week one match might be postponed. If away match of Pogoń vs Gent is moved to Wednesday (pending Q2 results of Polish, Belgian and Irish teams), they will want to postpone their fixture vs Śląsk.

1 - 42 players

First points lost by Raków and Lech, but they had really tough matches. Warta is again an unpleasant team to play against. It's quite a challenge to break their defense. Raków changed keeper for this match (also to collect U-22 minutes) and it didn't hold up. Lech were down to ten men, but managed to equalize after a corner - this time they made use of enemy keeper's error. Very positive result for Lech given their calendar.

Legia won and played more than 60 minutes 11 vs 10. Ruch hit the bar from a free kick when it was 0-0, but after Legia scored, their result was safe.

First really awful match in this season was derby Górnik vs Piast. The latter was involved in second consecutive goalless draw. It's too early to tell, hopefully it will not be yet another unsuccessful autumn for them.

Radomiak opened their new stadium, though without away stand yet. They played nicely, Pedro Henrique hit the bar three times and post once. Cracovia wasn't really the better team, but got result they wanted.

Puszcza and ŁKS both won, vital results for both newcomers.

Next week Łódź derby Widzew vs ŁKS is the game to follow. All European participants will play their matches as previously scheduled.

Warta Poznań - Ruch Chorzów 2:2
Maciej Żurawski 16', Kajetan Szmyt 45'+11 (penalty) - Tomasz Swędrowski 21', Michał Feliks 86'

2 - Adrián Dalmau (Korona Kielce), Patryk Dziczek (Piast Gliwice), Erik Expósito (Śląsk Wrocław), Kōki Hinokio (Stal Mielec), Josué (Legia Warszawa), Efthýmis Kouloúris (Pogoń Szczecin), Dawid Kurminowski (Zagłębie Lubin), Patryk Makuch (Cracovia), Filip Marchwiński (Lech Poznań), Afimico Pululu (Jagiellonia Białystok), Łukasz Sołowiej (Puszcza Niepołomice), Tomasz Swędrowski (Ruch Chorzów), Kajetan Szmyt, Maciej Żurawski (both Warta Poznań)

All matches were supposed to be played, but Lech postponed theirs with a short notice (before first match vs Spartak Trnava though).

Raków lost and it was proved that Gliwice will be a very difficult stadium to conquer. Lech's result from matchday 1 is therefore even more valuable.

Puszcza might pose problems as well, Legia was lucky to draw this match, as the equalizing goal was just a cross from a free kick that no one touched. Legia failed to win away in last four months and it's highly needed in Thursday in Vienna. However, they were unbeaten at home for several months and lost there vs Austria. So there is another streak to end against this opponent.

Pogoń looks really poor and they lose not only points, but also players with more and more injuries. Some people are counting on coefficient points in return leg vs Gent, but I'm afraid of a scenario in which reserve Gent players do the same thing as vs Žilina and score five goals again.

Nice start by Cracovia, who made literally no transfers and have basically no bench players. Widzew won the Łódź derby and had a second goal disallowed. First victories for Stal and Górnik.

This time all weekend matches were played as planned. Lech lost their fourth straight match vs Śląsk, feeding them with their first win this season. The atmosphere is terrible, actually Lech should now be favourite to claim the title, but it's possible that they sell one of the key players as they don't have the possibility to promote themselves in European matches. Also Joel Pereira will be missing for two months due to injury suffered in Trnava.

Raków won comfortably vs Stal and are ready for Copenhagen. Stratos Svarnas will be out, but Milan Rundić is back. John Yeboah should return as well as he is registered in the squad.

Legia couldn't secure the win safely and again caused themselves trouble in final minutes. Artur Jędrzejczyk got a red card, soon after that Rafał Augustyniak conceded a penalty, but VAR ruled it out for a narrow offside position. Legia had everything under control for 75 minutes, but in the last 15 they defended deeply against the last team in the table. At least this time they kept clean sheet, but no one is certain that they won't concede anything against Midtjylland.

In other matches, spectacular goal gave ŁKS win over Pogoń, though they could have scored even earlier than that. Zagłębie had tough time vs Puszcza and so did Jagiellonia vs Ruch. The newcomers are mainly at the bottom, but usually give a good fight.

Next week matches Lech - Raków and Pogoń - Legia won't take place and will be moved to September. On 30 August, Pogoń will face Śląsk, with reversed home team. Lech want to play Jagiellonia on this date too, but they can't clash with CL matches and TV broadcaster doesn't want them to clash with Pogoń vs Śląsk (kick-off 18:30 CET) either.

First of all, I like the image of the Ekstraklasa table.

Good to read that Miland Rundić is ready and John Yeboah should be ready for the match vs FCK in Sosnowiec.

I could not watch Ekstraklasa matches this week, except for Legia - Korona, so I am glad I can always read your unbiased summary of the matchday, Juliusz. Thanks.

Finally a good win for Wisła (5-1 vs Arka Gdynia) which allowed them to jump on 8th place in the 1. Liga. I hope they will continue playing so well and will be promoted to Ekstraklasa at the end.

@Juliusz , any report about current situation in Wisła? How do you see their chances to win a promotion this year?

I only watched one match of Wisła this season. It was the only other win, against Polonia Warszawa (3:2 away).

Allegedly many other matches followed the same pattern: Wisła dominated for 45 or 60 minutes, but then slowed down and was helpless when the opponents equalized or even scored winning goals. It was also close in Warsaw, but equalizing goal for Polonia was disallowed after a controversial call (foul on Wisła keeper).

It's 8th place, but also 4 points below last play-off place and 7 points below direct promotion place. I wouldn't believe in success in play-offs, as these are one-off matches that lower ranked team has to play away.

When it comes to direct promotion, it's hard to predict now, but the competition is strong. Miedź is likely to fight for it again. I am really curious about Motor Lublin, which is led by aggressive, but very competent coach. Bruk-Bet, Wisła Płock and Podbeskidzie should be powerful too, but they are even lower ranked than Wisła, which proves the balanced level of this league (even more than in Ekstraklasa).

There are always surprising teams as well. This summer they are GKS Katowice, Odra Opole and Górnik Łęczna. A dark horse, apart from Motor, might be GKS Tychy. I have no idea how Arka Gdynia and Lechia Gdańsk will proceed.

Wisła definitely has potential to finish high, but with this coach, pressure and absolutely no patience among the fans, each failure in a single match might be hard to survive. They have to advance to Ekstraklasa ASAP, otherwise they will eventually collapse, particularly financially. My guess is that they will participate in the play-offs and lose there again.

Pogoń Szczecin - Legia Warszawa postponed

Top scorers:
4 - Erik Expósito (Śląsk Wrocław), Tomáš Pekhart (Legia Warszawa)
3 - Adrián Dalmau (Korona Kielce), Patryk Dziczek (Piast Gliwice), Kajetan Szmyt (Warta Poznań), Łukasz Zwoliński (Raków Częstochowa)

Top 4 teams didn't play this weekend and we missed some good football. Jagiellonia is the new league leader after recording another 4-1 win. Górnik complains about red card shown in 44th minute, but it didn't change anything. Jagiellonia scored the 3-1 goal from the resulting free kick, so if it was yellow or red - doesn't matter in this situation. And the scoreline was still low as the hosts were attacking constantly and missing great chances.

Korona woke up when it comes to the result, but their performance hadn't been that bad before. It seems that they found a decent striker who was finally fielded from the first minute (Adrián Dalmau). As you probably noticed before, there are many Spanish players in Ekstraklasa and even more players with nice CV are coming from there. Juan Muñoz in Zagłębie is an example for that, although he hasn't scored yet. Zagłębie, same as Górnik, had to play down to ten men for a long time, but it was already after second goal of Korona.

Puszcza is now the best newcomer after they beat ŁKS at Cracovia stadium. ŁKS is another team complaining about refereeing, but some mistakes were also made by them (they were red carded as well). ŁKS played more away games because their home turf was being renovated in the summer and they lost all four games outside of Łódź. In spring in I liga, they only won vs Skra Częstochowa in Bełchatów (close to Łódź), at the beginning of the year, and that was all. Their away record is absolutely terrible.

Stal and Śląsk have to be praised, they did their best to add another wins. Piast vs Ruch had some exciting highlights, but nothing positive can be said about Warta and Cracovia. The latter had the only, very light shot on target on the day, and also hit the bar. Both of these events were in the added time and for 90 minutes absolutely nothing happened.

So you tend to be pessimistic about their chances to be promoted, me too, but I still believe they will win the promotion this season somehow...Otherwise, as you mentioned, they will collapse and start from lower divisions. These damn Sarapata and "Wisła socios" ruined Wisła and now huge effort from Błaszczykowski, Królewski and others who try to save Wisła might be wasted.

I would like to see Wisła and GKS Katowice promoted. For the 3rd and last promoted place I don't have any preferences. With one exception. I don't want Motor Lublin to be promoted. Nothing against Motor as a club, but a lot against Goncalo Feio. Period.

I don't know, the last win might have also been caused by weakness of Arka.

Recently it was very hard to come back to Ekstraklasa after just one season in I liga and last season proved that.

Last year Wisła wasted a lot of time under Brzęczek and failed to catch up in spring. Although it would have been enough if they beat Zagłębie Sosnowiec at home, so it was close.

This year competition is stronger for me than last year. So another terrible autumn cannot happen again if they want to promote.

Matchday 3 - postponed match

League table
Image

Result

Pogoń Szczecin - Śląsk Wrocław 0:2
Petr Schwarz 21', Piotr Samiec-Talar 85'
Attendance: 14 562

Earlier this afternoon Pogoń played their postponed match vs Śląsk. The hosts collapsed after being eliminated by Gent. Lost to Radomiak, ŁKS and now Śląsk. On the other hand, the guests won their last three matches (Lech, Widzew, Pogoń).

Śląsk can be painful to play against if their opponents prefer offensive style like Pogoń. They were a bit lucky, especially with their first goal, but are dangerous enough on counterattacks to make use of this luck.

Pogoń still have many injuries and will need time to recover. They also were close to equalize, but their goal was disallowed and a penalty wasn't given in another situation.

Domestic football in Poland will return on Friday as usual.

3 - Adrián Dalmau (Korona Kielce), Patryk Dziczek (Piast Gliwice), Pedro Henrique (Radomiak Radom), Josué (Legia Warszawa), Jordi Sánchez (Widzew Łódź), Bartłomiej Wdowik (Jagiellonia Białystok), Łukasz Zwoliński (Raków Częstochowa)

Two teams that are still involved in European football won, while two teams that were eliminated, failed to do it. Legia are league leaders despite two matches less. They extended their fantastic record vs Widzew, which is 19-5-0 in last 24 matches, mainly thanks to Ernest Muçi. In the first half, they didn't want to push after the early goal and were punished for that when Widzew had their only chance. Sánchez could have scored at the beginning of the second half as well, but missed and Legia finally did the job. Marco Burch was presented as new Legia player before the match and might be much needed at central back. Artur Jędrzejczyk was suspended, Rafał Augustyniak was injured and another new signing Steve Kapuadi didn't perform well in his debut. There will be also an addition at the left wing with Gil Dias.

Raków brought Ante Crnac this week, but didn't use him yet vs Puszcza. On the contrary to Legia, they needed a striker, although Łukasz Zwoliński scored vs Copenhagen on Wednesday. Against Puszcza, offensive midfielders scored, which was similar to the times under Marek Papszun. What they miss though, is efficiency after set pieces and their defenders used to score a lot in previous seasons.

Lech made billion crosses vs Górnik and only one of them led to a goal. They still can't return to their best shape and should be happy that now they play only every two weeks. Mikael Ishak got injured in this match as a terrible beginning of the season for him continues. Górnik could have even won it, but they have probably the worst strikers in the league, even worse than Raków.

Pogoń lost their fourth match in a row. You can always lose vs Zagłębie, but not only the result is worrying. Earlier this week, keeper Dante Stipica was moved to the reserve team and it's not sure if he was injured before or just wanted to avoid playing. Pogoń sold almost their entire midfield this summer, had a lot of injuries in the defense, and now even the offense stopped working. They should be grateful for the coming international break.

In other matches, Piast drew their fifth game this season and still failed to score from open play (three penalty goals, two after other set pieces). However, their matches are really entertaining, they play nicely, but miss so many chances. Their only experienced striker Kamil Wilczek is injured and no other player is able to replace him (even though he is not a star anymore). Śląsk won a tough match vs Jagiellonia which could go either way, but Śląsk has Erik Expósito, who is the MVP of the league so far. Raków wanted to sign him, but Śląsk refused to sell. If they had done it, they would be one of main candidates to be relegated. They sit on second place instead.

In I liga, new stadium in Płock was opened. Not the league level they wanted, but at least the result was fine for them, since Wisła defeated Polonia Warszawa 3-0 and it could have been more, but missed second penalty.

Well, well, well, huge surprise took place in Ekstraklasa today, something what nobody would have never expected  Warta Poznań lost to Lech Poznań
0-2.

All Warta - Lech clashes since Warta returned to the top tier:

20.09.20 Lech - Warta 1-0
26.02.21 Warta - Lech 1-2
28.11.21 Lech - Warta 2-0
14.05.22 Warta - Lech 1-2
18.09.22 Warta - Lech 0-1
08.04.23 Lech - Warta 2-0
17.09.23 Warta - Lech 0-2

Even Lokomotiva Zagreb used to beat or draw from time to time to Dinamo Zagreb, but here in Poland we have a much better version of Lokomotiva.

I used to cheer for Warta in the past. I thought "small and poor club, so I wish them all the best in Ekstraklasa", but not anymore.
