Quest for AFC Cup™ 2023/24 Group Stage set to begin

https://www.the-afc.com/en/club/afc_cup ... begin.html

Kuala Lumpur: The qualifying journey for the AFC Cup™ 2023/24 Group Stage begins on Tuesday, August 8, 2023 as the first of 13 matches in the Preliminary and Playoff Stages kick off.

Seven spots are on offer across all five AFC Zones for the 19th edition of the AFC Cup, with the slot allocations determined in June.
Two-time Nepal A-Division League champions Machhindra FC make their second appearance in qualifying, hoping to go one better than they did in 2022 when they fell at the first hurdle of the South Zone Preliminary Stage 1. This time, they face Paro FC of Bhutan – involved at this stage for a third time – on August 8 at 5.30pm local time at the Dashrath Stadium in Kathmandu.

The winner will play India’s Mohun Bagan Super Giant – seeking a seventh Group Stage qualification – on August 16 in the Preliminary Stage 2, which kicks off at 7pm at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata. The victor of this clash will proceed to take on either Abahani Limited Dhaka of Bangladesh or Club Eagles of the Maldives – who play each other on August 16 at 3.15pm at the Sylhet District Stadium – in the South Zone Playoff on August 22 for the right to be at the AFC Cup™ 2023/24.

The sole Preliminary Stage fixture in the Central Zone on August 15 at 4.30pm at the SportComplex in Mary City sees Turkmenistan’s FC Merw host Krygyz Republic outfit FC Alay, who have each previously made it to the Group Stage once and four times respectively. The winner will proceed to a date in the Playoff on August 22 at 4.30pm at the 20th Years Independence of Tajikistan Stadium in Khujand City with Tajikistan’s FC Khujand, who are aiming to secure a fifth straight involvement in the AFC Cup™ group stages.

The quest for four teams in the ASEAN Zone begins on August 16. Cambodian side Phnom Penh Crown FC, who won their record eighth league title last season, face Laotian club Young Elephants FC at 6pm at the Smart RSN STADIUM; incidentally, both were drawn in the same group in the AFC Cup™ 2022 on their Group Stage debuts. The other Preliminary Stage match involves Yangon United of Myanmar and DPMM FC from Brunei Darussalam, set for kick-off at 3.30pm at the Thuwunna Stadium.

The winners will then go on to duel with Singapore’s Tampines Rovers and Indonesia’s PSM Makassar respectively in the Playoff Stage, both on August 23, when the race to the Group Stage will reach its decisive phase. These kick off at 7.30pm at the Jalan Besar Stadium and 7pm at Bali’s Captain 1 Wayan Dipta Stadium respectively.

Two Playoff matches will be held in the West Zone as well. On August 22 at 7pm at the Khalifa Sports City Stadium in Manama, Al Khaldiya SC, who clinched their first ever Bahraini Premier League crown in 2022, can add an AFC Cup™ Group Stage debut to that achievement if they overcome four-time Oman Professional League champions Al Nahda, who last appeared in the Group Stage in 2015. On the same evening, Shabab Al Khalil of Palestine – Group Stage debutants in 2022 – will face Syria’s Al-Ittihad Al-Ahli of Aleppo at a neutral venue for the other berth on offer.

The final spot at stake will go to the winner of the straight shootout in the East Zone Playoff between Macau’s Monte Carlo and Chinese Taipei’s Taichung Futuro at 7.30pm at the Macau Olympic Stadium, with both eager to make it to the AFC Cup™ proper for the first time ever.

The full match schedule of the AFC Cup™ 2023/24 Preliminary and Playoff Stages can be accessed here while the slot allocations are available here.

The draw for the AFC Cup™ 2023/24 Group Stage takes place on August 24, 2023 at 2pm and will be live-streamed here.

The AFC Cup starts today with the AFC Cup preliminary round 1 match between Machhindra (Nepal) and Paro (Bhutan) in the South Zone.

Machhindra are the Martyrs Memorial ‘A’ Division League runners-up (they are representing Nepal in the tournament instead of the current champions Church Boy United after the latter failed to meet mandatory requirements of the AFC club licence).

Paro are the Bhutan Premier League champions.

AFC Cup
Preliminary Round 2: The Contenders

https://www.the-afc.com/en/club/afc_cup ... ers_1.html

Kuala Lumpur: The anticipation is building around AFC Cup™ 2023-24 as 10 teams from across Asia are gearing up for five one-legged Preliminary Round 2 ties starting on Tuesday with the aim of moving a step closer to a place in the continental competition.

The qualification action began on August 8 when Nepal’s Machhindra FC came from behind to defeat Bhutan’s Paro FC 3-2 in the only Preliminary Round 1 match in Kathmandu and moved on to the next stage where they are now joined by nine other contenders battling for places in the playoffs.

Ahead of the upcoming gamess, join the-AFC.com as we look at the 10 sides from the South, Central and ASEAN zones who will take to the pitch in the coming days.

South Asia Zone

After losing in the Inter-Zone semi-finals last season, India’s Mohun Bagan Super Giant return with the aim of reaching the group stage for the third consecutive time. Spanish head coach Juan Ferrando has strengthened his squad by acquiring Australia striker Jason Cummings as well as India internationals Sahal Abdul Samad and Anwar Ali as the Kolkata side begin their quest to go deep into the tournament once more.

On Wednesday, they face Nepal's Machhindra FC, who posted their first-ever win in the tournament when they overcame Paro FC in the previous round. In their second preliminary round appearance, the Kathmandu side have their hopes pinned on striker Afeez Olawale Oladipo and midfielder Andres Nia Tchounkeu while forward Bimal Gharti Magar will be keen to make a mark against his former club.

After exiting at this stage in their last two attempts, Bangladesh’s Abahani Limited Dhaka are looking to return to the group stage for the first time since 2019. Four years ago, they created history by finishing above Indian sides Chennaiyin FC and Minerva Punjab to advance to the Inter-Zone semi-finals as South Zone champions, becoming the first Bangladeshi side to go beyond the group stage.

Abahani’s opponents on Wednesday will be Club Eagles of the Maldives who return to the qualifying rounds after previously appearing in 2021. Runners-up in two of the last three seasons domestically, Eagles go into the game with Brazilian striker Ivan Carlos in fine goalscoring form and he is ably partnered in the attack by Maldives international Ibrahim Mahudhee.

Central Asia Zone

Turkmenistan’s FC Merw bowed out in the group stage in their only previous appearance back in 2006, when a 2-2 draw against India’s Dempo SC saw them get their only point on board. Having finished third in the 2022 Turkmenistan league to advance to the AFC Cup qualification rounds, they now need to shake off this season’s poor domestic form as they sit second-from-bottom in the nine-team league.

On Tuesday, Merw will face Kyrgyz Republic’s FC Alay, who have been regulars in the AFC Cup and are set for their seventh appearance since 2014. Captained by goalkeeper Dastan Alibekov, the Osh-based outfit recently acquired the services of Uzbek duo Nodirbek Ibragimov and Shokhrukhbek Muratov while Kyrgyz Republic international Danila Sokirchenko has also joined them to bolster their defence.

ASEAN Zone

After making seven group stage appearances in the AFC Cup between 2012 and 2020, Yangon United of Myanmar are looking to return to the tournament proper after a brief hiatus. Guinean striker Sekou Sylla is the top scorer in the Myanmar National League this season with 11 goals while new signing Jose Adolfo Valencia has also been among the goals and will look to make an impact in Asia.

Wednesday's opponents DPMM FC, who play their league football in Singapore where they were champions in 2015 and 2019, are making their AFC Cup debut after winning the 2022 Brunei FA Cup. Young Brunei Darussalam forward Hakeme Yazid Said and Belerusian Andrey Voronkov will be their main weapons in attack as the Bandar Seri Begawan club aim to create history by becoming the first side from their country to reach the group stage.

After appearing in the AFC Cup group stage for the first time in 2022, Cambodian Premier League champions Phnom Penh Crown FC will look to replicate their domestic success at the continental stage. Ukrainian head coach Oleg Starynskyi’s side is made up of national team stars like Orn Chanpolin and Lim Pisoth and have also recently added Myanmar defender Soe Moe Kyaw and Brazilian midfielder Denilson to their squad.

Standing in their way on Wednesday are familiar opponents in Lao League 1 champions Young Elephants FC. The Vientiane club have dominated the domestic scene in Laos in recent years, winning back-to-back league titles and Lao FF Cups. The Elephants suffered a 4-2 defeat to Phnom Penh in the group stage during their debut campaign last year, so will be keen to get a better result this time around.

AFC Champions League
Preliminary Round: Know Your Teams (East)

https://www.the-afc.com/en/club/afc_cha ... ast_1.html

Kuala Lumpur: The AFC Champions League™ 2023-24 gets underway on Tuesday as 10 sides from across the continent compete in the one-legged preliminary round, bidding to move a step closer towards the group stage of Asia’s most prestigious club competition.

Excitement is growing as the tournament nears because, for the first time since the beginning of the 2020 campaign and the onset of COVID-19, the AFC Champions League’s group stage is set to return to its home-and-away format.

For the teams in the preliminary round, that remains two wins away. Ahead of the upcoming fixtures, the-AFC.com profiles the four teams from the East side of the draw aiming to clear the first hurdle.

Bali United (Indonesia)
Qualified as: 2021-22 Liga 1 champions via playoff against 2022-23 winners

Indonesia’s most successful club side in recent years, Bali United have been crowned champions of their country in two of the past three completed seasons and return to the AFC Champions League preliminary rounds for the third time. They have also been a regular feature in the AFC Cup™, appearing four times between 2018 and 2022.

After a poor start to their domestic campaign, Bali have turned things around, winning four and drawing two of their past six matches as they continue their quest for a third league title in four seasons, having won their maiden crown in 2019.

Brazilians Eber Bessa and Jefferson, as well as Cameroonian Privat Mbarga, boast creativity and firepower going forward, while veteran striker Ilija Spasojevic continues to be a scoring threat, often from the bench, as Bali prepare to take on Lee Man FC in Hong Kong on Wednesday.

Lee Man FC (Hong Kong)
Qualified as: 2022-23 Hong Kong Premier League runners-up

Having been founded in 2017, Lee Man earned their first piece of silverware when they won the Sapling Cup in 2019. On the continent, they enjoyed a successful AFC Cup debut in 2021 when they emerged as East Zone champions before a 3-2 extra-time defeat against Uzbekistan’s FC Nasaf saw them exit the competition just one game before the final.

Brazilian striker Gil, who netted four goals, was the star of that campaign and remains a key component in the Lee Man frontline. However, his countryman Everton Camargo outscored him last season, finishing as the joint-top scorer in the Hong Kong Premier League as his side came second behind Kitchee SC.

Ahead of their first appearance in the AFC Champions League qualifying rounds, Lee Man will enjoy home advantage against Bali, although it’s the visitors who have the benefit of being in the midst of their domestic season ahead of what looks set to be an intriguing match-up.

Hong Kong Rangers FC (Hong Kong)
Qualified as: 2022-23 Hong Kong Premier League third place

Hong Kong Rangers return to continental action almost three decades since their only other appearance in an Asian club competition, when they lost to Yokohama Flugels in the 1995 Asian Cup Winners’ Cup. Earlier that year, they lifted the Hong Kong FA Cup and Hong Kong Senior Shield in what remains their last major pieces of silverware.

Having won promotion back into the Hong Kong Premier League in 2019, Rangers finished the most recent campaign in third place to earn their ticket to the AFC Champions League preliminary rounds and a date with Vietnamese side Hai Phong at Mong Kok Stadium on Tuesday.

Japanese striker Yumemi Kanda finished as their joint-top scorer last season and could well prove their most likely source of goals, while veteran playmaker Lam Ka Wai has been one of the standout players in Hong Kong for many a year and was a key part of Kitchee's rise to prominence in the previous decade.

Hai Phong FC (Vietnam)
Qualified as: 2022 V.League 1 runners-up

Vietnamese side Hai Phong, like Hong Kong Rangers, are making a long-awaited return to continental football, having been part of the 1996-97 Asian Cup Winners’ Cup, where they were beaten by eventual runners-up Nagoya Grampus in the second round.

Hai Phong have three times finished as runners-up in V.League 1 in the past 13 seasons having fallen just short of the title, although they did win the Vietnamese Cup in 2014. Their most recent second-placed finish, behind Hanoi FC in 2022, earned their spot in the AFC Champions League preliminary round.

Part of Vietnam’s golden generation, midfielder Luong Xuan Truong is the star name in the Hai Phong line-up, with fellow international Nguyen Hai Huy and Ugandan striker Joseph Mpande other players who could ask questions of the Hong Kong Rangers defence.

AFC Champions League
Preliminary Round: Know Your Teams (West)

https://www.the-afc.com/en/club/afc_cha ... est_1.html

Riyadh: The AFC Champions League™ 2023-24 gets underway on Tuesday as 10 sides from across the continent compete in the one-legged preliminary round, bidding to move a step closer towards the group stage of Asia’s most prestigious club competition.

Excitement is growing ahead of the upcoming edition as, for the first time since the beginning of the 2020 campaign and the onset of Covid-19, the AFC Champions League’s group stage is set to return to its home-and-away format.

For the teams in the preliminary round, that remains two wins away. Ahead of the upcoming fixtures, the-AFC.com profiles the six sides from the West side of the draw aiming to clear the first hurdle.

Shabab Al Ahli (United Arab Emirates)
Qualified as: 2022-23 UAE Pro League champions

AFC Champions League 2015 runners-up Shabab Al Ahli ended a seven-year drought to win their eighth UAE Pro League title in 2022-23 under the guidance of Portuguese coach Leonardo Jardim. The 2021 continental champion with Al Hilal has since left Rashid Stadium to join Qatar’s Al Rayyan and has been replaced by Serbian Marko Nikolic who is set to make his debut with the club in Tuesday’s preliminary round game against Al Wehdat.

Ahead of a busy season, Shabab Al Ahli have strengthened their squad with the signing of former Crystal Palace captain Luka Milivojevic as well as Mu'nas Dabbur from German side Hoffenheim.

Argentinian winger Federico Cartabia has been Shabab Al Ahli’s main man in recent years and was named the Best Foreign Player in the UAE Pro League on Thursday, while 20-year-old UAE international Harib Abdullah picked up the Best Young Player award in the same ceremony.

Al Wehdat (Jordan)
Qualified as: 2022-23 Jordanian Pro League runners-up

After competing in the AFC Cup™ for 11 years and reaching the semi-finals twice, Al Wehdat finally made the jump to the AFC Champions League in 2021. In their debut campaign, they collected a respectable tally of seven points and finished third in the group. The following year, they finished bottom with six points. The 17-time Jordanian champions will have to navigate two games if they are to make it three consecutive AFC Champions League appearances.

Having finished just one point behind champions Al Faisaly last season, Al Wehdat started the 2023-24 Jordanian Pro League season with back-to-back games against newly promoted sides Al Ahli and Al Jalil, collecting four points from the two encounters with a 1-0 win and 2-2 draw respectively.

Ivorian striker Bernard Doumbia joined Al Wehdat this summer after lengthy spells in Thailand and Kuwait and has started brightly, scoring in the 2-2 draw against Al Jalil. Meanwhile, club captain Mohammed Al Dameiri continues to lead by example from the back in his 15th season at the club over three spells.

Sharjah (United Arab Emirates)
Qualified as: 2022-23 UAE President’s Cup winners

After a 16-year absence from continental competitions, Sharjah returned to the AFC Champions League in 2020, following their first league title in over two decades. The club that had reached the quarter-finals back in 2004 has since competed in three consecutive editions of the competition, reaching the Round of 16 in 2021.

Under former Al Hilal, Al Ain and Jiangsu Suning head coach Cosmin Olaroiu, Sharjah have won the President’s Cup, the League Cup and the UAE Super Cup over the past 18 months, but have struggled in the league, finishing seventh in 2022-23.

Former Kashima Antlers and Al Ain winger Caio Lucas remains the club’s standout performer, but in ex AS Roma duo Miralem Pjanic and Kostas Manolas, Sharjah possess a lot of experience in midfield and defence, while Spanish international Paco Alcacer leads the line for them.

Bashundhara Kings (Bangladesh)
Qualified as: 2021-22 Bangladesh Premier League champions

Despite being just a decade old, Bashundhara Kings have made huge strides in their short history, climbing rapidly through the Bangladeshi football pyramid, with their rise culminating in winning the Bangladesh Premier League title four times in a row.

Their serial success earned the Dhaka based club entry to the AFC Cup in 2021 and 2022. On their continental debut, they beat Maziya Sports and Recreation from the Maldives 2-0 and went on to collect five points, finishing third in the group. The following term, they improved on their results, but a 4-0 defeat to Mohun Bagan Super Giant saw them just miss out on reaching the knockout stage despite finishing level with the Indian side with six points.

After joining from Abahani Limited Dhaka, Brazilian forward Dorielton wasted no time in adapting to his new surroundings, winning the top scorer award in the 2022-23 Bangladesh Premier League season with 20 goals. International winger Rakib Hossain made the same move as Dorielton has become just as influential for the Bangladeshi champions.

AGMK (Uzbekistan)
Qualified as: 2022 Uzbekistan Super League fourth place

AGMK have established themselves as perennial contenders at the very top of Uzbek football just 15 years after they were first promoted to the Uzbek Super League for the first time. The side from Olmaliq have finished in the top four for three consecutive seasons and contested the Uzbek final three times in the past five years, winning the title in 2018.

Having fell at the playoff hurdle in 2019, they made their AFC Champions League bow two years later, and were able to fight until the final matchday in a group that included the likes of Al Hilal, Shabab Al Ahli and Istiklol. Eventually they finished fourth, but with seven points, they were just three points away from qualifying to the round of 16.

With 16 games played in the Uzbek Super League this season, AGMK sit in fifth place, just behind AFC Champions League qualifying spots, and seven points behind leaders Pakhtakor. Italian forward Martin Boakye has been their best performer, bagging five goals so far, while they have recruited veteran defender Islom Tukhtakhujaev after a short spell at Qatar’s Al Gharafa.

Al Seeb (Oman)
Qualified as: AFC Cup 2022 winners

Al Seeb became the first Omani club to win a continental competition when they were crowned AFC Cup 2022 winners, beating Kuala Lumpur City FC 3-0 in the final and go into the AFC Champions League preliminary round hoping to be the first-ever side from the Sultanate to reach the group stage. Domestically, Al Seeb missed out on a second consecutive Oman Pro League title, finishing five points behind champions Al Nahda.

Since then, local coach Rasheed Jaber has left the club and was replaced by AFC Asian Cup™ 2007 winner Jorvan Vieira who returns to Oman 19 years after he last coached there with Al Nasr.

Muhsen Al Ghassani was Al Seeb’s top scorer in the AFC Cup 2022 while it was club captain Eid Al Farsi who picked up the competition’s MVP award. Both are continuing with the club and Al Seeb have also invested in bringing in Oman international Amjad Al Harthi who returns to his boyhood club.
