That stupid EL final still haunts me

Also the semifinal: how could we let Sevilla win it again?
Has a team ever been relegated in the same season it played in the UEFA CL GS?
No, but there's always a first time
Agreed. They were near the relegation zone until fairly late last season.

Jornada 3 begins on

Fri. 25 Aug.

1930 Las Palmas 0, Real Sociedad 0 The Canaries have one tie and a loss; la Real has two ties; both hoping to "get well." Scoreless in the Estadio Gran Canaria at the half. 25,335 reported on hand. Game ends scoreless--three ties on the season for la Real, this one thanks to goalie Remiro. Two ties and a loss for Las Palmas; they shoulda won this one.

2130 Celta 0, Real Madrid 1 Celta has a tie and a loss to date; el Real has won both of their games and leads the league on GD over Rayo and Valencia. Scoreless first half in Balaídos, although Strand-Larsen of Celta had one disallowed early on. At 81', Bellingham scores what proves to be the winner for el Real--0-1 the final, which means that only Rayo or Valencia could pass Real Madrid during Jornada 3--and that only on GD if either of those two wins by a sufficient number of goals.

Sat. 26 Aug.

1900--kickoff changed! Cádiz 1, Almería 1 Cádiz comes in with a win and a loss to date, while Almería has lost their two games at home, each by two goals. Luis gives Cádiz the lead at 59'. Almería finds the tying goal at 95' :!: Kaiky scores the goal that earns Almería their first point of the season.

1930 Granada 3, Mallorca 2 The former is tied for last place with Almería: zero points and +1-5 in goals scored-conceded. Mallorca has a tie and a loss to date. Marco Rubio gives Granada the lead at 13'. Muriqi hits the post with a pk when Mallorca has a chance to pull even. At 38', Abdón Prats ties it for the visitors--1-1 at halftime in the Nuevo Los Cármenes. At 46', Bryan Zaragoza makes it 2-1 for Granada; at 70', Uzuni converts a pk to make it 3-1. At 87', Samú pulls Mallorca to within a goal . . . and that's the final.

2130 Sevilla 1, Girona 2 Sevilla has lost both of their games to date, each by one goal. Girona is in fourth place with a big win and a tie tto date. Yángel Herrera gives Girona the lead at 16'. Another loss on the horizon for Sevilla :?: At 45'+2', Gudelj scores to tie for Sevilla--1-1 at the half. At 56', Aleix García scores what proves to be the winner for Girona. Sevilla had what sure enough looked like the tying goal disallowed near the end for a questionable offside. Sevilla now occupies last place all alone. :fingal:

Sun. 27 Aug.

1730 Villarreal 2, Barça 4 Villarreal has a home loss followed by a road win to date. Barça tied at Getafe and left it late but beat Cádiz last weekend. Villarreal comes out looking good, but after 10 minutes things turn around; Gavi puts in a header at 12' and De Jong scores assisted by Lewandowski at 15'--0-2. But Villarreal turns it back around: Foyth makes it 1-2 at 26' with a header off a corner, and Sorloth ties it with a tap-in at 40'--2-2 at the half. This game can go either way . . . Heck of a game :!: At 50', Alex Baena gives Villarreal the lead--3-2. But now Barça strikes back: at 68', Ferrán Torres ties it at 3-3, and at 71', Lewandowski puts in the winner off the post--3-4 the final; Barça is two points from the top.

1930 Valencia 1, Osasuna 2 Valencia is in third place with two one-goal wins to date. Osasuna won in Vigo but then lost to Athletic at home. At 24', Aimar Oroz converts a pk to give Osasuna the lead--0-1 at the half in Mestalla. At 80', Hugo Duro heads in to tie for Valencia, and Valencia almost wins it at 90' . . . but Nacho Vidal of Osasuna is the scorer of the winning goal at 95'--1-2 the final.

2130 Athletic 4, Betis 2 Athletic lost by two at home to Real Madrid but then beat Osasuna in Pamplona. Betis won in Villarreal and then tied Atleti in the Benito Villamarín. At 2', Willian José gives Betis the lead; Isco makes it 0-2 at 10' for the visitors. But Athletic comes back to take the lead on a hat trick by Vesga, who converts a pk at 30 and another at 45', and then scores the go-ahead at 45'+8'--3-2 Athletic at the half. Unai Gómez pretty well ices the win for Athletic with a goal at 84'--the final is 4-2.

Mon. 28 Aug.

1930 Getafe 1, Alavés 0 Geta tied at home with Barça, but then got blown out at Girona. Alavés lost in Cádiz but then beat Sevilla 4-3 in the highest-scoring game thus far in LaLiga. Scoreless at 60'. At about 84', penalty in favor of Getafe is converted by Borja Mayoral with paradinha included--1-0. Getafe hangs on to win.

2130 Rayo 0, Atlético 7 El Rayo has won each of their two games to date on the road, in Almería and in Granada; Rayo trails first-place Real Madrid only because they've scored one goal fewer than el Real. Atlético beat Granada at home and then got a scoreless tie at Betis. Can el Rayo possibly avoid a loss in this derby game :?: Griezmann gives Atleti the lead at 3'--0-1. At 16', Memphis scores as a Rayo defender fails to clear. Molina makes it 0-3 at 36'. Halftime. 13,966 reported on hand. At 73', Morata makes it 0-4. And at 79', Angel Correa makes it 0-5. And now it's 0-6 as Morata scores his second of the night. And at 86', Marcos Llorente makes it 0-7. :fingal: :fingal: :fingal: And that's the final. Believe it or not, I once attended a game in which Rayo beat Osasuna 7-0. But that was in second division, just about 50 years ago.

Why the surprise? 😉

In modern football every team needs a #5 that scores more than a goal a game.🤔

By the way, the number 5 of Real Madrid was also the number of Zinedine Zidane, another midfielder able to score many goals. :grin1:

Jornada 4 of LaLiga kicks off

Fri. 1 Sept.

1930 Cádiz 3, Villarreal 1 Cádiz has four points to date. Villarreal has lost both of their home games to date but won their only road game. At 10', Sorloth intercepts and beats Ledesma--0-1. At 18', Chris Ramos puts in a rebound to tie it--1-1. At 22', Pedraza gets a red card for a head butt--Villarreal now with 10 men. At 30', Machís converts a pk to give Cádiz the lead--2-1. After nine minutes added time, it's halftime in the Nuevo Mrandilla--2-1. At 50', Machís fires one in off the post--3-1. 15,516 reported on hand. Cádiz holds on to win 3-1.

2200 Almería 2, Celta 3 . . . or #19 hosts #18; each has a tie and two losses to date. Nuñez at 24' and Larsen at 33' gave Celta a two-goal lead. Almería came back to tie--goals by Akieme at 54' and Arribas at 68'. The winner was by Celta's Swedberg at 87'--2-3 the final.

Sat. 2 Sept.

1400 Real Sociedad 5, Granada 3 La Real is currently King of the Tie, having tied all three of their games to date. Granada has a win and two losses. At 9', Take Kubo gives la Real the lead--1-0. At 35', Le Normand of la Real scores an own goal off a corner--1-1. At 43', Take Kubo scores again, from just inside the area--2-1, now at the half. At 59', Zubimendi makes it 3-1. 27,808 reported on hand. At 67', Barrenetxea makes it 4-1. At 76', it's 5-1 as Miki of Granada scores an own goal. At 83', Boyé cuts the margin to 5-2 from inside the area. At 99', Bryan Zaragoza cuts the margin to 5-3, and that's the final.

1615 Real Madrid 2, Getafe 1 El Real is the only team in LaLiga that has won all three of their games to date. Geta has a win, a tie, and a loss. At 11', Borja Mayoral gives Geta the lead after el Real gives the ball away--0-1. Soria playing a great game in goal for Geta . . . Halftime
in the "new" Bernabéu . . . At 47', Joselu ties it for el Real--1-1. Attendance reported to be 66,747. At 95', Bellingham scores what looks like a winner for el Real--2-1. And that's the final.

1830 Alavés 1, Valencia 0 Alavés has lost twice on the road, but won their only home game to date. Valencia won their first two games, but lost at home to Osasuna on a very late goal by the visitors. At 6', Cenk of Valencia scores an own goal--1-0. Halftime; 16,641 reported on hand in Mendizorroza. Alavés holds on to win--1-0 the final. Kike García had two pk's saved by Valencia's goalie in the first half.

2100 Betis 1, Rayo 0 Betis has a win, a tie, and a loss to date. El Rayo won their first two on the road, but then suffered a seven-goal defeat by Atleti at home in Vallecas. Scoreless first half. 50,619 reported on hand. At 53', Willian José scores with a free kick--1-0. And the goal holds up for Betis to win.

Sun. 3 Sept.

1400 Girona 1, Las Palmas 0 To date, Girona is the "equiipo revelación": they are in third place, with two wins and a tie. Las Palmas has two ties and a loss to date. Scoreless first half. At 88', Portu heads in to give Girona the lead--1-0. And that proves to be the winner; Girona will be no worse than tied on points for second place at the jornada's end.

1615 Mallorca 0, Athletic 0 Mallorca has one point after three games. Athletic lost to Real Madrid, but then won at Osasuna and came back from two goals down to beat Betis. Scoreless first half in Son Moix. . . . followed by a scoreless second half.

1830 Atlético-Sevilla POSTPONED DUE TO WEATHER CONDITIONS IN MADRID Atleti is in second place with two wins and a tie; their win over Rayo was by seven goals to none :!: Sevilla is dead last with three one-goal losses in as many games, which makes them the 'farolillo rojo" at this point.

2100 Osasuna 1, Barça 2 Two teams that have mixed results, but mostly good ones. Osasuna lost at home to Athletic, but beat Celta and Valencia on the road. Barça couldn't beat Getafe on the road, but scored late to beat Cádiz at home; they went two goals down at Villarreal, but came back to win. They'll be playing their home games at the Lluis Companys stadium for quite a while while the Camp Nou is "rebuilt." Barça didn't look terribly sharp in the first half; Osasuna came closer to scoring . . . but at 45'+1', Koundé headed in to give Barça the lead at the half--0-1. Can Barça improve in the second half :?: At 76', Chimy Avila ties it for Osasuna--1-1. At 81', penalty in favor of Barça as Lewandowski is apparently fouled in the area. At 85', Lewandowski converts the pk, with paradinha included--1-2. Barça holds on, pretty much by the skin of their teeth; 10 minutes added time at the end.

There is no Monday game this week :!:
