German Football 2023-24
In the 2.Bundesliga, FC St. Pauli is top of the league with 10 points advantage over neighbors HSV 3rd place when only 8 games left. It means the Buccaneers are back in the Bundesliga.
Holstein Kiel in 2nd hold 5 points advantage over HSV. Things look good for the former German football champion.

Leverkusen did what West Ham, Lens and Bayern couldn't do: to win in Freiburg. 3:2.
One game less, still 10 points difference

Excellent point.diyx wrote: ↑Sun Mar 17, 2024 12:12There is also a difference if the team in question was favorite to win or not. In my opinion Bayern's 2nd place triple 2012 was very depressing because they were big favorites, especially in the Champions League final at home vs. Chelsea.

The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Benfica had 2 games before the match against Porto: away at Marítimo, at that time seen as an hard match and home against Estoril. Winning those 2 matches they would be champions no matter the result against Porto. They won't against Marítimo and the celebrations were huge. Win against estoril was a fait acomplit. But it wasn't, Estoril got it. They still need a draw at Porto. But Kelvin at 90+2 scored for Porto.
The fellowship of the ring was named after the celebrations at Marítimo, all players hugging together.
Few days latter The Two Towers: El Niño Ferrandos Torres (towers in spanish and portuguese) ended the dream of benfica getting the EL.
A few more days and cup final against Guimarães which symbol is our first king: D. Afonso Henriques and so this victory, first cup win for Guimarães was the Return of the King and the conclusion of the trilogy.
But benfica is now back at good old days getting 5-0 again.

XG Analysis
Xpts table
Two big surprises in this table
- Bayern could have a comfortable leader but Leverkusen are extremely efficient whereas Bayern concede goals they are not expected to concede. This makes the difference.
- Mainz currently in a relegation play-offs position could compete for the European spots but they have so many issues to address in attack and in defense.

Hoffenheim got the Qarabag treatment. And again it was well deserved with an xGoal rate of more than 4 again.
There was almost no suspense for the title (before this game Opta gave 97% chances to Leverkusen to win the title) but the way they are winning their games reinforces the feeling that nothing can happen to them.

What could happen to them? They have won 23 league matches and at the rest 4 they didn't loose so they totally dropped 8 points. Just 7 matches have left for them and they need to drop at least 10 points at them (more that they dropped at 3X+ matches) probably more since Bayern is loosing at HT in order not to be the champions. It sounds impossible to happen

Bayern going down against Dortmund. 2-0 in injury time.
Bayern 0-2 Dortmund with just minutes to go.
Leverkusen are now 13 points clear with 7 games left. I‘d say now it’s a million to one that Bayern will win their 12th consecutive Bundesliga title.
Finally, Bundesliga has a new Champion. I already started to wonder if I‘ll live long enough to ever witness another Champion except for Bayern.

Nothing is impossible with Tuchel. (I mean the negative records, of course, the Bundesliga title is surely not possible under this guy)
Baring an absolute disaster Leverkusen should be fine for the league after today.
