Czech Football Season 2023/24

Post by quelhar »

New season of czech football will start in less than three weeks, so it is time to start a new thread and update on some news.

General news: This is going to be the last season with current sponsors and broadcast rights contracts. Both contracts will be renegotiated during the summer and the league expects significant rise of income from both contracts starting from the 24/25 season. Current deals provide laughable money to clubs, less than 0,5M Euro even for the winner of the league. Moreover, the clubs under current contracts can not use clips from their own matches on their own social media or later in videos they make, which is also hard to understand these days.

The head of the referees committee Radek Příhoda resigned yesterday, citing exhaustion together with bad experiences with anonymous threats and even criminal complaints. The other four members of the committee continue and one of them will likely be Přhoda's successor as a head of the committe. Příhoda was under heavy criticism after his defence of referees who made a lot of dubious calls for Sparta Praha in late rounds of the last season.

Sparta Praha: At this moment, Sparta lost their goalkeeper no. 1 Matěj Kovář, who was there last season on loan from Manchester United. Even though there was some agreement that Kovář will stay in Sparta, Manchester decided to start their preseason with Kovář. It is still likely that Kovář will end up in Sparta eventually, but at this point Sparta does not have an obvious no. 1 goalkeeper. Sparta signed forward Jan Kuchta who was there on loan from Lokomotiv Moscow last season, midfielder Michal Ševčík from Brno, winger Veljko Birmančevič on loan from Toulouse and goalkeeper Jakub Surovčík from Jablonec, who however is definitely not on the level of Kovář and can not be considered as potential starting goalkeeper.

There are no significant departures from the club yet, although several players can be of interest for foreign clubs, namely defenders Martin Vitík and Ladislav Krejčí and forward Tomáš Čvančara.

Slavia Praha: Slavia acquired forwards Mojmír Chytil from Sigma Olomouc and Muhamed Tijani from Baník Ostrava and defender Sheriff Sinyan arrived as a free agent after his contract in Molde expired. There are rumours that Slavia will acquire midfielder Conrad Wallem from Odds BK soon. As for departures, Peter Olayinka left to Crvena Zvezda after his contract expired. Rumours are that Benfica and maybe RB Leipzig are interested in signing left back David Jurásek, Slavia will probably be ready to sell him for a prize above 12M Eur. Ibrahim Traoré left to Plzeň and Ewerton left on loan to Baník Ostrava.

Viktoria Plzeň: Potentially important news as the club has a new majority owner in an investment company lead by Martin Dellenbach. Adolf Šádek remains as a minority owner and a general manager of the club. New people in Plzeň have experiences from Rapid Vienna, FC Basel and are currently involved in austrian clubs Hartberg and Laufnitz. New owners probably won't raise the budget significantly but rather provide some economic safety net which Adolf Šádek was not able to provide. The club should continue to be at worst a strong N3 in the league behind economically more powerful Sparta and Slavia.

New head coach in the club is Miroslav Koubek who lead Hradec Králové for the last two seasons. There are no significant transfers apart from acquiring Ibrahim Traoré from Slavia.

Other clubs: Bohemians lost forward Václav Drchal, who was there on loan from Sparta Praha, and goalkeeper Martin Jedlička (on loan from Plzeň), but acquired midfielder Robert Hrubý from Zlín. Otherwise not much changed ahead of their european matches.

Goalkeeper Milan Heča is back in Slovácko while their previous no. 1 goalkeeper Filip Nguyen left to Vietnam.

Sigma Olomouc replaced Mojmír Chytil with Lukáš Juliš (ex-Sparta).

Liberec will as usual build a very young squad with players not needed in Sparta and Slavia. Luboš Kozel stays as a head coach even though his position was considered to be in some danger at the end of the last season.

Hradec Králové has a new coach in Jozef Weber and eagerly awaits the opening of their new stadium after they were forced to play in Mladá Boleslav for the last two seasons. The stadium should be ready in about a month, Hradec should play their first match there in round 3 of the league against České Budějovice.

Former forward Marek Kulič is a new head coach in Mladá Boleslav as previous coach Pavel Hoftych moves to a sports director position. Vasil Kušej is the star of the team and will likely be sold abroad during this summer.

České Budějovice acquired forward Zdeněk Ondrášek and a prominent journalist Jan Podroužek from czech newspaper Sport Daily will become their sports director during this summer.

Baník Ostrava will try to improve on their disaster 22/23 season with several squad changes, Srdjan Plavšič is back in Slavia and is replaced by Ewerton, several older players are gone (goalkeeper Laštůvka, midfielder Kuzmanovič, ...) and some younger players arrived. Head coach Pavel Hapal survived for this moment.

Radek Látal is a new coach of Jablonec replacing David Horejš. There is some movement in the squad but nothing major.

Nothing highly important happening in Teplice, Pardubice or Karviná. Zlín lost their main sponsor and there are rumours that there might be some financial troubles. At this point Zlín may be the likeliest club to be relegated at the end of the season.

The season will start on Saturday July 22.

David Jurásek leaves Slavia for Benfica and Slavia will recieve 14M Eur and 10 % of his next transfer fee. What a business for Slavia who acquired him from Mladá Boleslav 17 months ago for around 1M Eur.

Slavia also confirmed the aforementioned transfer of Conrad Wallem.

Another big transfer out of czech league, Tomáš Čvančara goes from Sparta Praha to Borussia Monchengladbach for about 10.5M Eur with additional bonuses and unspecified percentage of his next transfer fee.

Sparta defeated Anderlecht 6-0 in their last preseason match played for 3x45 minutes. Meanwhile Sparta still lacks a clear no. 1 goalkeeper. They are waiting for Matěj Kovář to return from Manchester United but already stated that they can not wait forever and if Kovář will not be available soon, they might buy another goalkeeper.

Viktoria Plzeň defeated FC Copenhagen 3-2, this match was also played for 3x45 minutes.

what a pity I realized it too late I could have seen this match live. It took place in Seeboden (near Lake Millstättersee) some prof. clubs have their summer camps in this area each year even FC Chelsea couple years ago. Dynamo Kiev is presently here for 3 weeks and Shaktar Donetsk as well some time ago. Al Hilal played in Wolfsberg yesterday.
Slavia and Sparta both play their home matches in the same rounds for a while. Sounds a bit funny but the reason might be Slavia and Bohemians (their stadiums are very close to each other).

It is not really a big deal lately, if both clubs play at home the same weekend. The stadiums are quite far away from each other and I don't recall any problems with fans attacking each other in these circumstances. And as you write, the league probably tried to minimize the occasions of Slavia and Bohemians playing the same round at home due to close proximity of their stadiums...
I have to say that I did not encounter anyone here in czech football community actually raising this point, so it is surely nothing considered controversial.

As usual, Tomáš Daníček who writes as @czechfooty on Twitter provides detailed previews in english for each club on his webpage and I can only recommend reading it if you are interested in more details about czech football or in particular league clubs... https://tdanicekt.medium.com/

In the final preseason match, Slavia was not able to win against Dynamo Dresden and the match ended with a 1-1 draw. The attendance was 16800 with more than 4000 away fans from Dresden.

They are thirsty for European football. :applause:

ps: what is your opinion about Gladbach's new player Čvančara? Is he able to help them immediately or will he need some time in a top 4 league?

Čvančara is very skilled forward, fast, tall, athletic... He does not have a clear weakness, was very capable to play a winger in Sparta's 3-4-3 setup, but I guess his main strength is in being a center forward. I wouldn't be shocked if he will be a regular starter if not immediately then in a few weeks. Also the amount of money Gladbach paid for him should help him gain a decent position in the squad.

His football skills were never in doubt in last say two years. But he is a difficult personality, is a bit of an egoist, he had some problems in Jablonec as well as in Sparta. I wonder how he will behave in Germany.

Thanks. Gladbach lost a few important players, so they need some kind of a restart with new young players, should help.

The league starts tomorrow. Sparta still does not have Matěj Kovář, but his return on loan from Manchester United is reportedly very close. Still, he might miss first round on Sunday. On the other hand, Sparta signed Victor Olatunji from Liberec as a replacement for Čvančara and center back James Gomez from Horsens.

All in all, the situation in the league did not change much over past weeks. Sparta and Slavia are considered almost equal with respect to their chances of clinching the title. Slavia is a tiny favourite (1,75 odds vs. 2,40 for Sparta). Plzeň is the only other club with reasonable chance to win the title (10.00 ods). It would be quite a shock if some other club ends in the top three.

The second division (FNL) starts already today with two main favourites for a direct promotion spot - Brno, which just got relegated and will change ownership during this season, and Dukla Praha.

Round 1
July 22: Pardubice - Bohemians 0:1 (Att: 3817)
July 22: Karviná - Zlín 4:1 (Att: 2967)
July 22: Teplice - Plzeň 1:0 (Att: 8141)
July 22: Slavia Praha - Hradec Králové 2:0 (Att: 17311)
July 23: Mladá Boleslav - Jablonec 3:1 (Att: 3500)
July 23: Liberec - Ostrava 3:1 (Att: 3338)
July 23: Slovácko - České Budějovice 4:1 (Att: 4324)
July 23: Sparta Praha - Olomouc 2:0 (Att: 17153)

Highlights of this round:
- Sparta started the season strongly with a win against Olomouc who is considered widely to be a favourite to end up in the top 6 this season. Two goals by Haraslín secured the result which was never much in doubt.
- Slavia defeated Hradec Králové also 2-0 taking advantage of an early goal by van Buren. Slavia then survived a huge chance by Hradec before scoring a second goal and deciding the match. Over 17 thousand spectators on both these matches is a huge success for czech football overall.
- Plzeň started the season even worse than last year. Again faced Teplice away and this time instead of drawing they lost 0-1 via a penalty. Plzeň did not have much chances and what is worse, two of their starting squad players got injured, center back Hejda and midfielder Květ. Květ will be likely out for a longer period of time.
- There was an incredible goal in the Mladá Boleslav - Jablonec match, which you just need to see: here
- Despite (or because of?) a lot of changes in Ostrava, they still fail to look like a european cups contender and young team of Liberec got a win against them.
- Karviná made an important step in first round, soundly defeating one of their main rivals in the survival fight.

League table after Round 1:
1. Slovácko 1 1 0 0 4:1 3
1. Karviná 1 1 0 0 4:1 3

The breaking point for Sparta has come. Based on the fact that Manchester United wants to sell Matěj Kovář and Sparta can't afford to buy him, they introduce new goalkeeper, danish Peter Vindahl arrives from AZ on one year loan with option.

Round 2
July 29: Olomouc - Karviná 3:1 (Att: 3254)
July 29: Zlín - Sparta Praha 0:1 (Att: 5521)
July 29: Pardubice - Jablonec 0:0 (Att: 3012)
July 29: Ostrava - Slovácko 0:0 (Att: 9016)
July 30: České Budějovice - Slavia Praha 1:3 (Att: 6681)
July 30: Bohemians - Teplice 1:2 (Att: 5679)
July 30: Mladá Boleslav - Liberec 2:2 (Att: 4112)
July 30: Plzeň - Hradec Králové 1:1 (Att: 8071)

Highlights of this round:
- Sparta had a strong start in Zlín but failed to score and since around 25' no big chances happened anymore. In the end VAR found a handball penalty which noone saw in real time and Krejčí as usual converted safely.
- Slavia won away. Zafeiris scored early with a deflected shot. Ondrášek equalized at the start of the second half but then Provod and Chytil assisted each other in goals in the final 20 minutes. Chytil moreover failed to convert a penalty in the added time.
- Surprisingly, Teplice are the third team with full amount of points after their win at Bohemians. Not that they would be a serious european cups contenders, but these points are vital for them and could easily mean that Teplice will avoid relegation fight completely this season and will play safely in the middle of the pack.
- Plzeň had another heartbreak after their goalless draw against Drita on Thursday. It looked a lot similar this time against Hradec, but Hejda was able to score in 81'. Soon after that Mosquera fouled Heidenreich with an elbow but Vašulín failed to convert a penalty. In the last second of the added time, Gabriel's cross found the head of Šašinka, Hradec equalized and Plzeň is already five points behind both Slavia and Sparta.

League table after Round 2:
1. Slavia Praha 2 2 0 0 5:1 6
2. Sparta Praha 2 2 0 0 3:0 6
3. Teplice 2 2 0 0 3:1 6

Round 3
August 5: Sparta Praha - Pardubice 5:2 (Att: 16 911)
August 5: Karviná - Mladá Boleslav 1:2 (Att: 3 226)
August 5: Slovácko - Olomouc 0:2 (Att: 4 942)
August 5: Hradec Králové - České Budějovice 5:1 (Att: 9 058)
August 6: Plzeň - Ostrava 3:1 (Att: 10 088)
August 6: Teplice - Jablonec 0:0 (Att: 5 258)
August 6: Liberec - Bohemians 0:1 (Att: 2 958)
August 6: Slavia Praha - Zlín 2:1 (Att: 17 581)

Highlights of this round:
- Overall this is a round with the highest average attendace in this century (8 753). This was helped by Slavia, Sparta and Plzeň playing at home in the same round and Hradec Králové opening their new stadium.
- Sparta Praha moves to the lead by a superior goal difference as they beat Pardubice 5-2. It could have been even better, Sparta lead 5-0, but then conceded twice. A bit of controversy as the referee failed to send off Sparta's midfielder Kairinen in the first half, but the score was 3-0 already and the match was decided.
- Slavia - Zlín was one of the most lopsided match in recent memory. Slavia absolutely dominated, had 34 shots but somehow only scored twice and after they conceded in 83' to make it 2-1, the players started to panic and allowed another two chances to Zlín, both shots went wide. Slavia won 2-1 while the proper score should have been like 5-0.
- Plzeň won against Ostrava not by dominating the match but by scoring from breakaways. Ostrava did not play badly but failed to convert their chances.
- New Hradec arena is finally open and despite some technical difficulties on Saturday, it was still a pleasant night in Hradec as the home team defeated České Budějovice 5-1. Budějovice had their chances when it was still goalless, they are surely the most unlucky team in the first three rounds

League table after Round 3:
1. Sparta Praha 3 3 0 0 8:2 9
2. Slavia Praha 3 3 0 0 7:2 9
3. Mladá Boleslav 3 2 1 0 7:4 7
4. Teplice 3 2 1 0 3:1 7
5. Olomouc 3 2 0 1 5:3 6
6. Bohemians 3 2 0 1 3:2 6

8. Liberec 3 1 1 1 5:4 4
9. Plzeň 3 1 1 1 4:3 4
9. Slovácko 3 1 1 1 4:3 4

Round 4
August 12: Ostrava - Hradec Králové 2:0 (Att: 7 040)
August 12: Zlín - Liberec 1:1 (Att: 2 738)
August 12: Jablonec - Sparta Praha 1:5 (Att: 5 684)
August 13: Bohemians - Slovácko 0:1 (Att: 5 612)
August 13: Olomouc - Teplice 2:1 (Att: 3 588)
August 13: Mladá Boleslav - Slavia Praha 0:1 (Att: 5 000)
August 13: Pardubice - Karviná 2:1 (Att: 2 887)
August 13: České Budějovice - Plzeň 2:5 (Att: 4 723)

Highlights of this round:
- For the second week in a row, Sparta scored five goals, this time in Jablonec. Sparta played with a lot of usual substitutes due to the upcoming match against Copenagen, but the home team was simply atrocious and did not show any resistance. It was 0-5 at halftime and the final goal difference could have been even higher than just four goals.
- Slavia played very tough match in Mladá Boleslav. Slavia also fielded several substitutes, the result was that the match was more or less even for 60 minutes. Then Mladá Boleslav scored an own goal after a cross by Provod. Slavia failed to score a second goal but home team created nothing substantial in final minutes.
- Plzeň won easily away in České Budějovice while the home club continues its horrible start with 17 conceded goals in 4 matches.
- Olomouc moved to N3 after their win against Teplice.
- Ostrava finally won a match but needed two added time goals against Hradec Králové. Still, Baník was the better team and the win is quite deserved.
