CAF Confederation Cup

18.8.2023
Singida Big Stars FC 4-1 JKU SCZ

Singida Big Stars in strong position after TotalEnergies Confederation Cup first leg

Tanzanian side Singida Big Stars claimed an impressive 4-1 first leg victory at home against Zanzibar's JKU in the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round.

Led by a brace from Marouf Tchakei, Singida put themselves in pole position to reach the group stage of the competition.

Tchakei, who joined the club in July from DR Congo's AS Vita Club, opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 5th minute after being fouled in the area.

The Togolese midfielder then doubled Singida's lead by converting another penalty just before halftime.

Tchakei turned provider for Singida's third goal, playing a precise pass for Nigerian forward Morice Chukwu to score.

Kenyan Duke Abuya made it 4-0 to the Tanzanian league runners-up early in the second half.

JKU pulled a goal back later on but Singida remained firmly in control to secure a comprehensive first leg victory.

The return fixture takes place on 27 August at the Azam Complex Stadium, where JKU will need to overturn a three-goal deficit to progress.

Tchakei's stellar show provided Singida with the perfect start to the tie, with the midfielder justifying his arrival with two goals and an assist.

After a dominant first leg display, Singida have one foot in the Confederation Cup group stage as they aim to reach the later rounds of continental competition.

CAF Champions League

18.8.2023
KMKM SC 1-2 Saint George S.C.
CS Constantine 0-2 Étoile SS

https://www.cafonline.com/caf-champions ... ue-opener/

Etoile secure away win in TotalEnergies CAF Champions League opener

Tunisian club Etoile du Sahel earned an important 2-0 away victory over Algeria's CS Constantine SC in the first leg of their TotalEnergies CAF Champions League preliminary tie on Friday night.

Both teams failed to find a breakthrough in a goalless first half at Martyr Hamlawi Stadium in Constantine.

The deadlock was broken in the 71st minute when Malian star Soumaila Sidibe dribbled past the Constantine defence to fire Etoile ahead.

The hosts were unlucky when Hamza Daman's late effort was ruled offside after initially looking like the equaliser.

With minutes left, Constantine keeper Khaireddine Boussouf fouled Hamza Al Jelassi in the area and the resulting penalty sealed a 2-0 win for the Tunisians.

The first leg victory gives Etoile, 2017 Champions League winners, a solid advantage ahead of the return fixture in Sousse next week.

The Algerians now face a difficult task overturning a two-goal deficit in the second leg to progress past the preliminary stage.

Etoile will be confident of completing the job on home soil to book their place in the next round of Africa's premier club competition.

Meanwhile, Ethiopian side St George began their campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 first leg victory over Tanzania's KMKM SC earlier on Friday.

The first preliminary round, first leg match tie took place at Azam Complex Stadium in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Goals from Biniam Belay and Natneal Zeleke gave St George a slim advantage to take into the second leg in Ethiopia on 27 August.

The Ethiopian giants soaked up early pressure from their Zanzibar opponents before taking the lead in the 38th minute through Belay's well-worked goal.

St George then showed their game management skills by protecting their lead until half-time.

The visitors extended their advantage five minutes after the restart when tall striker Zeleke rose above his markers to head in a corner.

KMKM pulled a goal back late on to give themselves hope ahead of the return fixture.

Both sides are looking to make their mark in Africa this season after underwhelming Champions League campaigns in recent years.

St George, Ethiopia's oldest club formed in 1935, have a passionate fanbase and reached the group stage in 2017 but failed to progress further.

Meanwhile, KMKM are yet to qualify for the group stage in their Champions League history.

The second leg in Ethiopia will determine who reaches the next qualifying round, with St George holding a slim first leg lead.

Ferroviaro Maputo also cruised past Belle Lumiere of Comoros by a 3-0 margin.in another clash of the round.

Pirates get vital away win in TotalEnergies CAF Champions League

Former champions Orlando Pirates’ return to the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League got off to a great start with a vital 1-0 away win over Djabal FC in the Comoros in the first leg of the Preliminary Round of the competition on Saturday.

The Buccaneers, who are known to enjoy good runs in CAF Inter-Club competitions, return to Africa’s premier club competition after missing out last season.

Champions in 1995 and runners up in 2013, the South Africans got their campaign off to a good start with a narrow victory over the islanders, a side they met at the same stage of the competition in 2013 where they cruised past them with a 9-0 aggregate.

Djabal came out a much-improved side from 10 years ago and held the South Africans for the most part of the match before a lapse of concentration in the dying minutes saw the in-form Zakhele Lepasa get the winner to give Pirates a slim advantage ahead of the return leg.

In another afternoon fixture, Namibia’s African Stars shone bright when they emerged victorious over Zambia’s Power Dynamos with a 2-1 win in a match played in Soweto’s Dobsonville Stadium in South Africa.

Goals by Peter Adiwoh and Edmund Kambanda secured the victory for the Namibians, while Andy Boyeli’s consolation will give the Zambians a fighting chance when they host Stars in the return leg next weekend.

Meanwhile in Mali, Real Bamako of were unlucky not to go get a victory at home after an evenly balanced encounter with Coton Sport de Garoua of Cameroon concluded in a 0-0 stalemate.

Both sides had an equal chance of getting a result, but the visitors will have their keeper, Merlin Lako Emile to thank for the draw who did well to save a penalty in the 60th minute to keep things level ahead of the return leg.

In Sierra Leone, Bo Rangers played out to a 1-1 draw against Liberia’s LISCR FC, while Rwanda’s APR were also held to the exact same scoreline at home against Somali’s Gaadiidka FC.

The first round of the 1st Preliminary fixtures draws to a close on Sunday, with more high-octane African club football action to feast on.

Some of the marquee fixtures taking place include Cote d’Ivoire’s Asec Mimmosas travelling to meet Benin’s Coton Sport, while Morocco’s AS Far are away to ASKO in Togo.

In Libya, Al Ahly Benghazi plays hosts to Nigerian powerhouse, Enyimba in what promises to be an action-packed affair.

Moroccan club FUS Rabat earned a 3-0 home win over Benin side AS Loto in the first leg of their TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup preliminary round tie on Sunday.

The hosts applied pressure from the outset at Moulay El Hassan Stadium, taking the lead when Loto's Ibrahim Imray scored an own goal under pressure.

Loto struggled to create chances against FUS Rabat's organised defence, conceding again in the 27th minute to trail 2-0 at half-time.

After the break, FUS Rabat won a penalty but Hamza Hanuri's effort was saved by the Loto goalkeeper.

Despite attempts to add to their tally, FUS Rabat had to wait until stoppage time to make it 3-0 through substitute Shuaib Maftoul.

The comfortable first leg victory gives the Moroccan club a strong advantage heading into the return fixture in Benin next weekend.

Meanwhile in other matches played on Sunday, Ethiopian club Bahir Dar Kenema claimed a 2-1 home win over Tanzanian side Azam FC.

In an away trip to Tunisia, Libyan club Abu Salem edged past Olympique Beja 1-0 at Stade Boujemaa-Kmiti.

Watanga FC of Liberia suffered a 3-1 home defeat to Malian opponents Stade Malien. Togolese club Etoile Filante held Casa Sport of Senegal to a 1-1 draw.

Angolan team Academica Lobito left it late but eventually defeated Seychelles' La Passe FC 2-1.

Yanga, Galaxy secure important first leg victories in TotalEnergies CAF Champions League

Tanzanian champions Young Africans (Yanga) got their TotalEnergies CAF Champions League campaign off to a flying start with an emphatic 2-0 victory over Asas Djibouti at the Azam Complex Stadium in Dar Es Salaam on Sunday.

A wonder strike by Stephane Aziz Ki in the opening half along with another sublime hit by dangerman, Kennedy Musonda secured the win for the hime side.

It also ensured last season’s TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup runners-up seal a win in front of their fans, as they look to build on last season’s impressive run on the continent.

Two-time champions Eniymba of Nigeria were defeated 4-3 by Libyan club Ahli Benghazi in a highly entraining match at the Martyrs of February Stadium in Benghazi.

Meanwhile on the southern part of the continent, striker Thabang Sesinyi scored both goals of the match as Jwaneng Galaxy of Botswana played host to Uganda’s Vipers FC in another exciting fixture of the weekend.

As expected, both sides went in search of the early opener, however it was the hosts who got ahead in the 15th minute courtesy of a Thabang Sesinyi strike.

Coming back from the break, the Ugandans pushed hard for the equalizer and had their fair share of chances but were denied by the brilliance of Galaxy keeper, Goitseone Phoko.

Vipers continued piling on the pressure, which opened them up at the back as Sesinyi struck once again in the 72nd minute to notch up a brace and put the match beyond reach for the Ugandans.

The Big Bullets of Malawi fired themselves into a comfortable position ahead of the return leg with a 2-0 victory over Equatorial Guinea’s Dragon FC.

In Ghana, Medeama Sporting Club's Jonathan Sowah scored in the 22nd to secure a narrow 1-0 victory over Nigeria’s Remo Stars, who will be hoping to reverse the slim advantage a week from now in the return leg.

Morocco’s AS FAR had to work overtime for their 1-0 away win over a resilient ASKO Kara in Togo in a match that could have gone either way, while in Angola, Primeiro de Agosto managed a slender 1-0 victory over Congolese giants, AS Vita.

Three fixtures concluded in stalemates on Sunday.

In Benin, nothing could separate Coton Sport and Cote d’Ivoire’s Asec Mimosas as they shared the spoils in a goalless draw, with the same result in Guinea as hosts, Hafia were held to a 0-0 draw by Generation Foot of Senegal.

Congo’s Otoho FC could not capitalize on home ground advantage as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Sudanese side, Al Merrikh who will go into the second leg with the slight advantage.

The return leg of the first preliminary round of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League takes place next weekend, with the kick-off times and venues to be announced in due course.

The home match of Salaam was originally going to be played in Morocco. However, the team could not travel there because of finance and passport issues: https://www.eyeradio.org/al-salam-bor-s ... o-morocco/

South Sudan's representative in the Confederation Cup, Al Merreikh Juba, may also be unable to play the second leg against Haidoub of Sudan, even though they won the first leg, due to lack of funding: https://www.eyeradio.org/el-meriekh-fc- ... o-funding/

Very interesting that in both competitions, we have a Sudanese derby, and we will also see it in the 2026 WC qualifiers since Sudan and South Sudan are drawn into the same group.

Home sides look to reverse upsets in TotalEnergies CAF Champions League return fixtures

https://www.cafonline.com/caf-champions ... -fixtures/

After a highly entertaining opening round of the CAF Champions League 1st Preliminary Round, clubs are preparing for yet another action-packed weekend of African club football.

The opening round saw some interesting results and upsets this past weekend, setting up another round of ties that fans of the African game can look forward to.

After holding on to a narrow 1-0 victory in Ghana, Medeama SC travel to Nigeria with a slim advantage ahead of their return leg with Remo Stars at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne.

In Zambia, Power Dynamos host Namibia’s African Stars after a 2-1 first leg loss in Soweto.

Dynamos will not only be looking at getting a result at Ndola’s Levy Mwanawasa Stadium, but also aiming at getting a confidence boosting win ahead of their start to the Zambian Premier League next week.

A match to certainly look forward to this weekend is without a doubt Al Ahli Benghazi’s trip to Aba in Nigeria where they will face Enyimba.

The two sides produced one of the most electrifying high-scoring fixtures last weekend that concluded in a 4-3 victory for the Libyan’s who will have their work cut out in Aba.

Moving over to Cote d’Ivoire, TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations 2023 hosting venue, Yamoussoukro Stadium plays host to Asec Mimosas against Coton Sport of Benin.

The two sides played out to a goalless draw in the first leg, paving the way for another tightly contested match where both sides will be going all out for the result.

In the northern parts of the continent, Tunisian giants, Etoile du Sahel travel to the Chahid Hamlaoui Stadium in Constantine, Algeria with a 2-0 cushion to face CS Constantine.

While the Tunisians carry somewhat of a comfortable lead, the hosts will be buoyed by the highly vocal fans of Constantine who are known to create an intimidating atmosphere in their full voice.

A similar uphill task awaits Uganda’s Vipers SC, who will be aiming at reversing a 2-0 loss suffered at the hands of Botswana’s Jwaneng Galaxy last weekend.

Fortunately for The Venoms, they will be at their St Mary’s Stadium home base in Kampala which should give them a slight advantage.

Further down the continent, former champions (1995) Orlando Pirates welcomes Comoros’ Djabal FC with a slender 1-0 advantage following a successful trip to the Islanders last weekend.

The South African Football Association have confirmed that Mamelodi Sundowns will represent Mzansi in the African Super League.

The newly-formed league has been somewhat of a mystery, with details and exact dates yet to be confirmed by the Confederation of African Football.

SAFA have now confirmed that a delegation from CAF visited South Africa to inspect Sundowns’ venues, before stating the draw for the new competition will take place in September.

The new tournament is set to kick off on 20 October and run to 11 November, with eight teams taking part.

“The inaugural African Super League will officially kick-off in October 2023 where eight confirmed clubs from around the continent will contest the continental title,” SAFA stated.

“The newly-formed competition will be played over a period of four weeks, with the group stage matches beginning on 20 October 2023. The final will be played on 11 November 2023.

“South African champions Mamelodi Sundowns are part of the prestigious tournament alongside Egyptian giants Al Ahly, Wydad Athletic Club of Morocco, Esperance Sportive de Tunis, TP Mazembe of Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria’s Enyimba Football Club, Simba Sports Club from Tanzania and Atletico Petroleos de Luanda from Angola.

“A delegation from CAF visited South Africa this week to conduct a venue inspection and also ascertain the state of readiness ahead of Mamelodi Sundowns’ home matches.

“The official draw for the inaugural tournament is scheduled for early September 2023.”
