TotalEnergies CAF Champions League: TP Mazembe, Ahly, Esperance and Sundowns primed for Semis

https://www.cafonline.com/caf-champions ... for-semis/

The 2023/24 TotalEnergies CAF Champions League campaign reaches a crescendo this weekend when four African heavyweights meet in the first leg semi-finals on Saturday, 20 April.

Al Ahly (Egypt), TP Mazembe (DR Congo), Espérance Sportive Tunis (Tunisia) and Mamelodi Sundowns (South Africa) are the four remaining clubs contending for Africa’s most prized club football crown.

The first leg semi-finals will be played this weekend, 20 April, with the return leg scheduled for 25-26 April 2024.

It has been 10 years since the Democratic Republic of Congo side, TP Mazembe – former FIFA Club World Cup finalists – reached the finals of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League.

They will have to overcome a major hurdle this weekend when they meet current champions Al Ahly of Egypt in Lubumbashi.

Amongst the four clubs, a total of 21 TotalEnergies CAF Champions League titles have been won, with defending champions Ahly dominating with eleven titles, Mazembe with five, ES Tunis with four, and Mamelodi Sundowns with a single title.

In Tunis, ES Tunis continue their search for a fifth title after last tasting continental glory in 2019.

They welcome Mamelodi Sundowns, whose 2016 title is coupled with a recent confidence-boosting African Football League (AFL) triumph that has elevated their pedigree on the continent.

Very small margins separate the four clubs who all have championship mettle and an equal chance of going all the way this season.

TotalEnergies CAF Champions League Semi-Finals Fixtures:

Saturday, 20 April (First Leg)

13h00 GMT | TP Mazembe vs Al Ahly SC

19h00 GMT | Espérance Sportive Tunis vs Mamelodi Sundowns

Friday, 26 April (Second Leg)

18h00 GMT | Mamelodi Sundowns vs Espérance Sportive Tunis

19h00 GMT | Al Ahly SC vs TP Mazembe

All four clubs will be gunning for a place in the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League Final, which has been confirmed to take place on Saturday, 18 May for the first leg, with the Second Leg confirmed for Saturday, 25 May 2024.

RS Berkane refuse game without jerseys, USM Alger match postponed

https://en.hespress.com/83864-rs-berkan ... poned.html

The first leg of the CAF Confederation Cup semi-final between USM Alger and RS Berkane was delayed due to a dispute over RS Berkane’s jerseys.

The Moroccan club insisted on wearing their official kit, including a Sahara map, throughout the competition.

Algerian authorities at Houari Boumediene Airport seized the shirts upon Berkane’s arrival. Despite CAF’s intervention requesting their return, the jerseys weren’t delivered.

USM Alger took the field alone at the scheduled match time, acknowledging their fans and posing with the Algerian flag.

Algerian fans shouted racist remarks against the Moroccan team with statements like“Give him bananas, give him bananas, the Moroccan is an animal!”

The RS Berkane team refused to play its match against USM Algiers, in the first leg of the CAF Confederation Cup semi-final, with alternative shirts made by the Algerian Football Federation.

Identical sources explained that Nahdet Berkane Club is clinging to its official shirt, which includes the full map of the Kingdom of Morocco.

The same sources added that the Moroccan club attended the technical meeting before the match without the shirts it had brought to Algeria.

The same sources stressed that Hakim Ben Abdullah told CAF officials, in his capacity as president of RS Berkane, that “there is no discussion on the issue, and no match without shirts emblazoned with the full map of the Kingdom of Morocco.”

CAF Cup: USM Alger-RS Berkane match finally cancelled

https://sport.le360.ma/maroc/coupe-de-l ... ule-111261

The first leg of the semi-final of the Confederation of African Football Cup between the Union Sportive de la Medina d'Alger and the Renaissance Sportive de Berkane has finally been cancelled. Algeria has clung to its sulky stubbornness.

The first leg of the semi-final of the Confederation of African Football Cup between the Union Sportive de la Medina d'Alger and the Renaissance Sportive de Berkane has finally been cancelled. Algeria has clung to its sulky stubbornness.

Scheduled for this Sunday evening, April 21 at the 5-July-1962 stadium in Algiers, the USM Algiers-RS Berkane match has finally been cancelled.

The information was reported by the correspondent of BeIN Sports, the exclusive broadcaster of CAF competitions in the MENA region (Middle East and North Africa).

This is all the more intriguing as the Confederation of African Football (CAF) had rejected the Algerian Football Federation's (FAF) appeal regarding RS Berkane's use of its usual jersey, flocked with the full map of Morocco with its Sahara.

The CAF committee had decided, on Saturday (April 20th), that the jersey worn by the players of the Moroccan football club, Renaissance Sportive de Berkane, complied with CAF's statutes and regulations. The RSB is, therefore, authorised to wear it in all circumstances.

CAF CC: USM Alger - RS Berkane match cancelled

https://www.dzfoot.com/football-en-alge ... 58164.html

The first leg of the semi-final match of the African Confederation Cup between USMA of Algiers and Renaissance Sportive of Berkane has been cancelled.

It's official! The match between USMA and RSB will not take place. Indeed, the Moroccan club decided to boycott the match. The Berkane players refused to play with the tunics made available to him by the Algerian Federation and without their "official" jerseys. Despite their presence at the 5 July stadium, the Moroccans refused to set foot on the pitch.

As a reminder, on Friday at Algiers airport, Algerian customs seized the controversial outfits of the Moroccan club. The RS Berkane jersey displayed the map of Morocco with occupied Western Sahara. Now, the case will end up in the offices of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne.
